Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the significance of the voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) as a management tool for organisational restructuring.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper presents the personal view of the author, based on research findings and practical experience.

Findings

The paper advances the viewpoint that to attain the competitive edge and to survive in the current turbulent times, it is essential for the management to right size their organisations. It is imperative for them to look for the right kind of strategies to overcome the redundancy. They have to choose the most viable options considering its financial and legal implications. This would not only help management in maintaining the healthy industrial relations but also enhance the overall organisational profitability and well-being.

Practical implications

The paper highlights the pros and cons of the VRS. It reflects the financial and legal implications of the same on the employer and employees in the organisations.

Originality/value

This paper depicts how VRS (acts as a management tool and helps in improving organisational efficiency. It basically talks about exercising the VRS and its related legislation in an Indian context.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to optimize the quantum of aonla pulp that could be mixed with guava pulp to make a nutritional rich fruit bar. The developed fruit bar will not only help in the improvement of processing value of both Guava and underused but highly nutritional Aonla but also serve the purpose of improvement in nutritional status of consumers.

Design/methodology/approach

Response surface methodology (RSM) using Box–Behnken design was used with the process variables as aonla and guava pulp ratio, PR (30:70, 40:60, 50:50); pectin concentration, PC (0, 0.15, 0.30%); and drying temperature, DT (50, 60, 70°C) for optimization of process conditions. The prepared mixed fruit leather was evaluated for physico-chemical, textural and sensory properties such as titratable acidity (TA), ascorbic acid content (AA), L value (lightness), cutting force (CF), taste and overall acceptability (OAA).

Findings

Second-order regression models fitted for TA, AA, L value (lightness), CF, taste and OAA were highly significant (P = 0.01) with the coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.85). The TA and AA of mixed fruit bar increased whereas L value, CF, taste and OAA decreased with increasing level of aonla pulp in the blend formulation. The optimum process conditions for mixed aonla-guava bar with desirable characteristics were 40:60 (PR), 0.02% (PC) and 56°C (DT). The corresponding optimum values of TA, AA, L value, CF, taste and OAA were 1.00%, 164 mg/100 g, 50, 5066 g, 7.83 and 7.92, respectively. The design formulation and data analysis using RSM validated the optimum solution.

Originality/value

This paper demonstrates that optimum blending of aonla and guava pulp has improved the overall nutritional characteristics and acceptability of the final product. This will not only help in reducing the associated post-harvest losses but also encourage the cultivators/local processing industries by stabilizing the price during glut sea.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the link between information systems (IS) agility, HR performance management systems and job satisfaction using organizational information processing theory. The objective of this study answers the following questions: How does use of different IS agility impact HR systems and job satisfaction? What are the connecting pathways by which IS agility affects HR systems and job satisfaction?

Design/methodology/approach

The authors developed a theoretical framework based on the organizational information processing theory and collected primary data through an online-based questionnaire. Following these procedures, the authors analyzed the data using structural equation modeling (SEM).

Findings

SEM analysis of the data from 150 respondents supports the organizational information processing theory. The authors proposed eight hypotheses, and only one was rejected.

Research limitations/implications

The data were collected from South Africa only, which is an emerging economy, and these cross-sectional data were gathered from the perspectives of the respondents.

Originality/value

The present paper empirically tests the conceptual model through the lens of organizational information processing theory.

Abstract

Purpose

Technological developments have made it possible for organizations to use enterprise resource planning (ERP) services without indulging in heavy investments like IT infrastructure, trained manpower for implementation and maintenance and updating the systems regularly to maintain business competitiveness. Plug and play model offered by cloud ERP has led to a constant creation of large data sets which are structured, semi-structured and unstructured by nature. Thus, there has been a need to analyze such complex data sets and the purpose of this paper is to focus on how cloud ERP and big data predictive analytics (BDPA) will impact the performance of a firm.

Design/methodology/approach

A dynamic capability view (DCV) theory-based model was developed and the authors have collected data by using an online questionnaire from India. Thereafter, the authors have analyzed it by employing structural equation modeling.

Findings

SEM analysis of 231 respondents showcases that the use of DCV theory to define the relationships of cloud ERP and BDPA has been the right move. Out of the 13 hypotheses empirically tested, only 7 hypotheses were supported by the data.

Research limitations/implications

The study showcases cross-sectional data from India. It would be interesting for this study to see if the country-level differences would influence these relationships between cloud ERP and financial performance, BDPA and financial performance and cloud ERP and BDPA.

Originality/value

This study empirically tests the relationship of cloud ERP and BDPA through a model based on DCV theory.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper was to analyse the research trends on the Indian Open and Distance Education (ODE) system as reflected in the articles published in the prominent journals of distance education across the world.

Design/methodology/approach

A study was undertaken to review the research articles on ODE in India published in 11 prominent peer-reviewed journals of distance education during the period 2010–2019. Content analysis was done to find out areas of research undertaken in the ODE of India based on a validated classification of research areas; types of research studies conducted; and authorship and publication patterns.

Findings

Out of a total of 2,571 articles published in 11 selected journals, only 191 (7.42%) pertained to ODE in India. The majority of these 191 articles (68.42%) were published in Indian journals. The Indian and Asian journals together accounted for 93.55% of total articles. Globally, the share of articles on the Indian ODE system was significantly low ranging between 4.27 and a maximum of 10.77%, which was much below expectations from a country having the maximum number of ODE learners in the world. Results further revealed that 63% of the contributors to research on ODE in India were affiliated to Indira Gandhi National Open University.

Research limitations/implications

The limitation of this study was only analysing the research articles published in journals of distance education and other types of articles, namely, book reviews, editorials, field notes and workshop reports were excluded from the analysis.

Practical implications

The study is intended to help researchers, policymakers, and open and distance education institutions to draw a roadmap for the promotion and conduct of system-based research, which would be vital for strengthening the system.

Social implications

The quantum of research is not proportionate to the number of faculty members working in the ODE system of India and the large number of learners that it serves, which is a matter of concern. For any system to grow its periodic systemic review is essential. The research outcomes need to be ploughed back into the system for its betterment.

Originality/value

The study is original. There is no such study undertaken till date. This study will be extremely useful to researchers, as the gaps in distance education research which are yet to be addressed, have been identified by the authors.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to attempt the buckling analysis of a laminated composite skew plate using the C0 finite element (FE) model based on higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT) in conjunction with minimax probability machine regression (MPMR) and multivariate adaptive regression spline (MARS).

Design/methodology/approach

HSDT considers the third-order variation of in-plane displacements which eliminates the use of shear correction factor owing to realistic parabolic transverse shear stresses across the thickness coordinate. At the top and bottom of the plate, zero transverse shear stress condition is imposed. C0 FE model based on HSDT is developed and coded in formula translation (FORTRAN). FE model is validated and found efficient to create new results. MPMR and MARS models are coded in MATLAB. Using skew angle (α), stacking sequence (Ai) and buckling strength (Y) as input parameters, a regression problem is formulated using MPMR and MARS to predict the buckling strength of laminated composite skew plates.

Findings

The results of the MPMR and MARS models are in good agreement with the FE model result. MPMR is a better tool than MARS to analyze the buckling problem.

Research limitations/implications

The present work considers the linear behavior of the laminated composite skew plate.

Originality/value

To the authors’ best of knowledge, there is no work in the literature on the buckling analysis of a laminated composite skew plate using C0 FE formulation based on third-order shear deformation theory in conjunction with MPMR and MARS. These machine-learning techniques increase efficiency, reduce the computational time and reduce the cost of analysis. Further, an equation is generated with the MARS model via which the buckling strength of the laminated composite skew plate can be predicted with ease and simplicity.

Abstract

India has a prominent place in scientific activity among the third world countries. This is evident from its high production of publications in different branches of science and technology as well as from its accelerated growth of research and development work within the country. Almost all the papers, notes, reviews, corrections and correspondence published in scientific journals contain citations. These cite generally by title, author and where and when published, documents that support, provide precedent for illustration orelaborate on what the author has to say. Citations are the formal, explicit linkages between papers that have particular points in common. A citation index is built around these linkages. It lists publications that have been cited and identifies the sources of the citation. Anyone conducting a literature search can find from one to dozens of additional papers on a subject, just by knowing one that has been cited. This communication outlines the development of a citation index in India.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to strive to develop a rock fall velocity model in C++ language and to give spatial attributes to the model using Geographic Information System (GIS) capabilities. Interaction between the parameters involved in the model is evaluated through GIS embedded techniques.

Design/methodology/approach

The mathematical model developed in C++ is based on the physical law of gravitation pull, adjudging the potential fall between two points at different elevation. Further, parameters influencing the velocity gradient – namely local relief, coefficient of land use friction, slope amount and slope length – are incorporated in the model. GIS is used extensively to generate the data required for the model. GIS capabilities are also explored for visualisation and interpretation of the model output. Section profiles and a co‐relation coefficient further strengthen the velocity map.

Findings

The rock fall velocity map generated using GIS shows variations in the velocity gradient at selected sections. It is concluded from analysis that friction values play a pivotal role in drastically changing the velocity gradient.

Research limitations/implications

The model presented is restricted to rock fall velocity evaluation for a rectangular matrix of input data and spatial extent, rather than for specific locations. Incorporating parameters to delineate source areas and runout zones would produce a more realistic scenario. Trials along this line are in progress and are expected to be executed successfully very shortly.

Practical implications

The paper presents a versatile model with easily extractable parameters to compute rock fall velocity at a regional scale, conditioned for rugged terrain. The model has specific implications in infrastructure development and planning management for rocky terrain. Moreover, the model's output can be implemented effectively in preliminary investigations of the protection of forest development and erecting defensive measures in rock fall‐prone areas.

Originality/value

Not many models are available for rock fall velocity estimation on a regional scale. The model developed through this research work provides a platform for a regional‐scale study using parameters that can be easily derived from DEM and a land use map. It is reiterated that the model output is helpful for land planners and managers engaged in mountain development. The model is an effective tool in the strategic development of hazard management plans in slide‐prone areas.
