Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop and validate a scale to reliably capture the variance of perceived risk towards purchasing on the internet at the product level.

Design/methodology/approach

A two‐dimensional scale to measure internet Product Purchase Risk (IPPR) was developed and tested in three studies. In the first study a preliminary pool of items was generated with evidence of content validity. In the second study the IPPR scale was purified using principal axis factor analysis. In the third study evidence of criterion‐related, known‐group, nomological, and discriminant validity was demonstrated.

Findings

The IPPR scale was found to successfully capture the variance of evaluation judgement and internet security risk. IPPR was also found to have a quadratic relationship with experience purchasing a product category from the internet.

Research limitations/implications

Although strong evidence to suggest construct validity was demonstrated, it is understood that efforts to establish the validity of new measures should be ongoing. Specifically, although the IPPR scale was shown to produce reliable‐measurements for seven different products, the measurement of IPPR across more product categories would strengthen evidence of generalizability.

Practical implications

Given that risk is strongly dependent on the type of product, the procedure to develop the IPPR scale demonstrates the importance of measuring risk at the product category level.

Originality/value

This is the first study to develop and rigorously validate a multi‐item measure of purchase risk at the product level. Given the importance of risk in understanding online consumer behaviour, the IPPR scale will be useful for future studies in this domain, especially for comparing findings.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is twofold: to identify, evaluate and structure the research that focusses on omni-channel retailing from the perspective of logistics and supply chain management; and to reveal the intellectual foundation of omni-channel retailing research.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper applies a multi-method approach by conducting a content-analysis-based literature review of 70 academic papers. Based on the reference lists of these papers, the authors performed a citation and co-citation analysis based on the 34 most frequently cited papers. This analysis included multidimensional scaling, a cluster analysis and factor analysis.

Findings

The study reveals the limited consideration of logistics and supply chain management literature in the foundation of the omni-channel retailing research. Further, the authors see a dominance of empirical research as compared to conceptual and analytical research. Overall, there is a focus on the Western retail context in this research field. The intellectual foundation is embedded in the marketing discipline and can be characterised as lacking a robust theoretical foundation.

Originality/value

The contribution of this research is identifying, evaluating and structuring the literature of omni-channel research and providing an overview of the state of the art of this research area considering its interdisciplinary nature. This paper thus supports researchers looking to holistically comprehend, prioritise and use the underpinning literature central to the phenomena of omni-channel retailing. For practitioners and academics alike, the findings can trigger and support future research and an evolving understanding of omni-channel retailing.

Abstract

Many people accessing services, including counselling services, do not speak the official language of the country in which they find themselves. This paper first considers, in general terms, the way that language is used to negotiate relationships and to structure and provide meaning for our experiences, needs, feelings and ideas. This is then related to the use of native language in therapeutic work and the practical issues that this can present for services.The paper then reports on a small‐scale informal piece of research that was conducted in 2009 by Mothertongue multi‐ethnic counselling and listening service with six bilingual and multilingual counsellors, none of whom were native English speakers. The aim was to explore what might be learned from their experience of living with more than one language and then to apply this to the task of communicating in English with non‐English speakers in the therapeutic relationship.Some practical observations and suggestions are included in this paper. These incorporate the themes that emerged from the research such as: attending to clients' linguistic history; the way in which emotions are expressed in different languages; how speaking more than one language impacts on identity formation and the ability to understand across languages and culture; how we convey and construe significance and meaning; how we relate to people's experiences of learning a language. The author of this paper hopes that these findings and observations will stimulate further conversations on this topic.

Abstract

Purpose

Publishing in scholarly journals is a practical necessity for academics. Put simply, this reality can be described as “publish or perish”. To be treated as a serious contender for tenure and promotion, scholarly research and activities directed towards publication are necessary aspects of faculty life. The purpose of this paper is to provide insights into “dealing” with the editorial review process of publishing from the perspective of a relatively new author.

Design/methodology/approach

Using the lens of Q and R theory, a case study approach combined with critical reflection provides a documented tour to enable other authors to enhance their understanding of the publication process through including references to associated reviews and correspondence with a journal editor. The review extracts from the editor and authors’ responses are discussed within the context of a theoretical schema and timeline.

Findings

Drawing from the theoretical schema, the paper identifies 11 lessons learned along the way to publishing, and these are summarised as the 11 commandments of publishing.

Research limitations/implications

Utilisation of the Q and R theory can assist researchers as they reflect on how to maximise their publication outcomes.

Practical implications

The 11 commandments provide a practical approach for those wanting to improve their understanding and likelihood of publishing success.

Originality/value

The originality of this paper is that it considers the publication process from a novice author who subsequently draws on the knowledge of more experienced co-authors. The findings are based on a theoretical schema that is transferable and able to be adopted by others to guide publication outcomes.
