Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate how hedonic and utilitarian choice options of online travel agencies (OTAs) affect consumers’ process enjoyment and booking intentions.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors apply a one-factorial experimental design. The stimuli consisted of screenshots of the fictitious OTA “www.my-holiday.com”. Participants were told to imagine they were planning a city trip to San Francisco and that, during an internet search, they came across a new OTA called “www.my-holiday.com”.

Findings

The authors find that both booking intentions and process enjoyment are higher for hedonic OTAs, i.e. OTAs which offer more hedonic choice options such as entertainment and spa. The authors conclude that these toolkits strongly relate to pleasurable experiences and positive emotions. Therefore, these options drive positive affective reactions in terms of process enjoyment, which subsequently affect booking intentions. Additionally, the authors find that preference insight positively affects consumers’ booking intention as the number of choices provided by the OTA increases.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to tourism research on online travel shopping behavior. The authors apply knowledge from research on online customization tools to an OTA context and show that hedonic and functional choice options of OTAs significantly reflect on consumer behavior.

Abstract

Purpose

Linked data is a technical standard to structure complex information and relate independent sets of data. Recently, governments have started to use this technology for bridging separated data “(silos)” by launching linked open government data (LOGD) portals. The purpose of this paper is to explore the role of LOGD as a smart technology and strategy to create public value. This is achieved by enhancing the usability and visibility of open data provided by public organizations.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, three different LOGD governance modes are deduced: public agencies could release linked data via a dedicated triple store, via a shared triple store or via an open knowledge base. Each of these modes has different effects on usability and visibility of open data. Selected case studies illustrate the actual use of these three governance modes.

Findings

According to this study, LOGD governance modes present a trade-off between retaining control over governmental data and potentially gaining public value by the increased use of open data by citizens.

Originality/value

This study provides recommendations for public sector organizations for the development of their data publishing strategy to balance control, usability and visibility considering also the growing popularity of open knowledge bases such as Wikidata.

Abstract

Purpose

The cutting process of the electric machine laminations causes residual mechanical stress in the soft magnetic material. A local magnetic deterioration can be observed and the resulting local and global iron losses increase. A continuous local material model for the consideration of the changing magnetization properties has been introduced in a previous work as well as an a priori assessment of iron losses. A local iron loss calculation considering both a local magnetization and local loss parameters misses yet. The purpose of this study is to introduce a local iron loss calculation model considering both a local magnetization and local loss parameters.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, an approach for local iron loss simulation is developed and a comparison to the cut-edge length-dependent loss model is given. The comparison includes local loss distribution in the lamination as well as the impact on the overall motor efficiency and vehicle range in an electric vehicle driving cycle.

Findings

For an analysis of the resulting local iron loss components, both the local magnetization and iron loss parameters must be considered using physically based models. Consistently, a local iron loss model is presented in the work. The developed model can be used to gain detailed information of the local loss distribution inside the machine. The comparability of this local iron loss with the cut-edge length approach for overall system characteristics, e.g. efficiency or driving range, is shown.

Originality/value

A local iron loss simulation approach is a physical accurate model to describe the influence of cutting techniques on electric machine characteristics. A comparison with the less complicated a priori assessment gives detailed information about the necessity of the local model under consideration of the given problem.

Abstract

Purpose

As the internet has become an increasingly relevant communication and exchange platform, social interactions exist in multiple forms. The research aims to integrate a multitude of those interactions to understand who contributes and why different types of contributors generate and leverage social capital on online review sites.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the literature about social capital, social exchange theory, and transformative consumer research, the authors carried out a study of 693 contributors on a hotel review site. Content analysis and a latent profile analysis were used to research the contribution types and the underlying motives for generating and leveraging social capital.

Findings

Through the integration of various customer-to-customer interactions, the results reveal a three-class structure of contributors on review sites. These three groups of individuals show distinct patterns in their preferred interaction activities and the underlying motives.

Research limitations/implications

The authors develop the existing literature on transmission of electronic word-of-mouth messages and typologies of contributors. Future research should seek to expand the findings to additional industry and platform contexts and to support the findings through the inclusion of behavioral data.

Originality/value

The research contributes to researchers and marketers in the field by empirically investigating who and why individuals engage in online social interactions. The authors expand upon the existing literature by highlighting the importance of social debt in anonymous online environments and by assessing a three-class structure of online contributors.
