Abstract

Purpose

When reports that better clothing stores and hotels in the USA found themselves in the embarrassing position of acknowledging that they had indeed been infested with bedbugs, other organizations and institutions, including some libraries, have been on the alert ever since for similar evidence of such infestations. The purpose of this column is to discuss the recent reports of the re‐appearance of bedbugs and the impact they have had on some libraries.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper's approach is a literature review and commentary on this topic.

Findings

From the library perspective, any sign of bedbugs must be attended to immediately so that the infestation does not spread further. There are two proven and effective measures that can be undertaken by a library to address this issue – exposing the books to extreme heat or extreme cold – but placing the staff at risk should always be a consideration when attempting a self‐eradication in a library as well. Therefore, engaging a professional exterminator at the first visible sign of bedbug infestation should always be seen as a potential solution.

Originality/value

The value in addressing this issue is to create an awareness that the re‐appearance of bedbugs in some libraries is very real as indicated by the reporting of this issue in the media.

Abstract

Purpose

Escalation of commitment is one of the most influential decision-making biases in entrepreneurs which may incur substantial losses and result in failure by making entrepreneurs allocate an increasing amount of resources to failing plans. Not only is escalation one of the less-researched biases in entrepreneurship but also most of the existing studies have been either limited to specific contexts or exclusively limited to men entrepreneurs. The purpose of this study is to explore the antecedents of escalation of commitment among a sample of Iranian women and men entrepreneurs to address these gaps.

Design/methodology/approach

By conducting a narrative inquiry, data were collected through semi-structured and in-depth interviews with nine women and 10 men Iranian entrepreneurs who were founder/owners of a small business and had introduced at least one product to the market.

Findings

According to the findings of this study, the fear of losing autonomy and fear of being blamed by one’s family were the main drivers of escalation of commitment among the women entrepreneurs, while overconfidence, sense of responsibility and hoping to gain more profits were the main antecedents of escalation among men entrepreneurs.

Originality/value

This study is a pioneer in studying the antecedents of the escalation of commitment among women and men entrepreneurs comparatively in the context of a developing country.

Abstract

Explains ways to mitigate the effects of various species of pests in dwellings, dealing with three distinct groups ‐ insects, rodents and birds. There are now many other species, apart from fleas, lice and bedbugs, which have evolved to capitalize on the more recent environmental modifications which man has undertaken. Looks at several objections, apart from the aesthetic, to the presence of pests in dwellings including significant risks to health, deterioration of the structure itself and economic loss. Examines potential pest problems which may arise in new designs/construction and suggest possible solutions.

Abstract

Purpose

While some people are mindful of what a personal space that also belongs to a common façade portrays to outsiders, why other people treat this personal space as a mere utility space invisible to the public eye must be determined. International students who live in single-bedroom apartments with balconies and were mostly married were investigated regarding the meaning they attach to their balcony spaces. The paper aims to discuss this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

This work also hypothesized that residents of these units perceived their balconies as a liminal space that oscillates between a spatial repertoire for familiar memories and a versatile, utilitarian device for temporary storage. A naturalistic inquiry was then conducted among purposefully sampled apartment dwellers via in-depth, open-ended and semi-structured interviews.

Findings

While offering much needed spatial economy to dwellers, the cues and codes revealed that the balcony space could furnish a sense of membership to established social cohorts. The balcony space further brings an element of escape and ease into impecunious student life by means of its ability to offer a broad spectrum of spatial-aspatial needs that manifested in forms of personalizations and exploitations.

Originality/value

A knowledge gap in socio-cultural appropriation of on-campus apartments for sustainable redevelopment where the majority of consumers were married/partnered, international students has been investigated.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide an overview of legal reference sources available from ProQuest, specifically Legislative Insight and Congressional, with a focus on their scope and usability for particular types of legal reference queries.

Design/methodology/approach

ProQuest resources useful for legal research were located, evaluated and discussed.

Findings

ProQuest legal resources are not as prominently displayed as many of the vendor’s other subject-specific offerings, but once located, several of them can be used collaboratively to fully research a single legal issue from inception to practice and enforcement.

Originality/value

The examination of the resources in this study will provide academic librarians with an understanding of which ProQuest resources should be used in collaboration with each other to answer general legal enquiries as well as in-depth, specific statutory research.

Abstract

This chapter examines practical strategies to address issues related to poverty in small to mid-sized urban districts. Data clearly demonstrates that students in poverty perform at a lesser rate than their affluent peers. The greatest challenge facing public school leaders is educating students in poverty. This chapter is informed and supported by the existing educational research base and drawn primarily from our authentic experiences as educational leaders in public schools. The information shared is realistic, practical, and uniquely derived from day to day public school life.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the types of user misbehaviours in the sharing economy (SE) context. SE offers a fruitful study setting due to the scope of potential misbehaviour and the expanded role of consumers.

Design/methodology/approach

The study drew on online archival data from the AirbnbHell.com website, where people share their stories about their Airbnb-related negative experiences. The authors reviewed 405 hosts’, guests’ and neighbours’ stories and coded the identified forms of misbehaviours into categories. The typology thus developed was validated in the context of the Uber Rides service.

Findings

User misbehaviours in the SE context can be distinguished based on the domain in which the user role is violated and the nature of violated norms. These two conceptual distinctions delineate a four-fold typology of user misbehaviours: illegal, unprofessional, unbefitting and uncivil behaviours.

Research limitations/implications

The trustworthiness of the stories could not be assessed.

Practical implications

The presented typology can be used as a mapping tool that facilitates detection of the full scope of misbehaviours and as a managerial tool that provides ideas for effective management of misbehaviours that correspond to each category.

Originality/value

The paper presents the first empirically derived comprehensive typology of user misbehaviours in SE settings. This typology enables classification of a broad set of misbehaviours, including previously overlooked unprofessional behaviours carried out by peer-service providers. The study also puts forward a revised definition of consumer misbehaviours that encompasses the impact of misbehaviours on parties not directly involved in the SE-mediated exchange.

Abstract

Purpose

Aims to suggest how characteristics of the idealized nuclear family may provide some lessons for the improved practice of hospitality management.

Design/methodology/approach

Explores the origin and nature of the family as a social unit and the benefits experienced by its members and society. Relates this background to a fictional case study, “The Halcyon Hotel”.

Findings

Concludes that in a world where family values seem to be in decline, the concept of the idealized nuclear family could be readily transferred to the practice of hospitality management for improved teamworking and overall operational improvement.

Originality/value

Compares the characteristics of the extended domestic family with the corporate “family” in terms of roles and responsibilities.

Abstract

Devoted to the Pine Hills branch of the Albany (NY) Public Library, with its approximately 35,000 books, let a dedicated user defend the principle of being small and the concomitant notion that the small library is an ideal place for leisure‐time activity. Most of the literature of acquisitions, collection development, evaluation, and the like seems ultimately concerned with massive libraries. Yet, these are relatively few, as compared to the thousands of smaller, and more used, public and academic libraries.
