Abstract

Purpose

Rotational speed and load-carrying capacity are two mutual coupling factors which affect high precision and stable operation of a hydrostatic thrust bearing. The purpose of this paper is to study reasonable matching relationship between the rotational speed and the load-carrying capacity.

Design/methodology/approach

A mathematical model of relationship between the rotational speed and the load-carrying capacity of the hydrostatic bearing with double-rectangle recess is set up on the basis of the tribology theory and the lubrication theory, and the load and rotational speed characteristics of an oil film temperature field and a pressure field in the hydrostatic bearing are analyzed, reasonable matching relationship between the rotational speed and the load-carrying capacity is deduced and a verification experiment is conducted.

Findings

By increasing the rotational speed, the oil film temperature increases, the average pressure decreases and the load-carrying capacity decreases. By increasing the load-carrying capacity, the oil film temperature and the average pressure increases and the rotational speed decreases; corresponding certain reasonable matching values are available.

Originality/value

The load-carrying capacity can be increased and the rotational speed improved by means of reducing the friction area of the oil recess by using low-viscosity lubricating oil and adding more oil film clearance; but, the stiffness of the hydrostatic bearing decreases.

Abstract

Purpose

Bearings in electric machines often work in high speed, light load and vibration load conditions. The purpose of this paper is to find a new fatigue damage accumulation rating life model of ball bearings, which is expected for calculating fatigue life of ball bearings more accurately under vibration load, especially in high speed and light load conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

A new fatigue damage accumulation rating life model of ball bearings considering time-varying vibration load is proposed. Vibration equations of rotor-bearing system are constructed and solved by Runge–Kutta method. The modified rating life and modified reference rating life model under vibration load is also proposed. Contrast of the three fatigue life models and the influence of dynamic balance level, rotating speed, preload of ball bearings on bearing’s fatigue life are analyzed.

Findings

To calculate fatigue rating life of ball bearings more accurately under vibration load, especially in high speed and light load conditions, the fatigue damage accumulation rating life model should be considered. The optimum preload has an obvious influence on fatigue rating life.

Originality/value

This paper used analytical method and model that is helpful for design of steel ball bearing in high speed, light load and vibration load conditions.

Abstract

The breakdown of laminar flow in the clearance space of a journal is considered, and the point of transition is considered in relation to experiments carried out with ‘bearings’ of large clearance. Experiments involving flow visualization with very large clearance ratios of 0.05 to 0.3 show that the laminar regime gives way to cellular or ring vertices at the critical Reynolds number predicted by G. I. Taylor for concentric cylinders even in the presence of an axial flow and at a rather higher Reynolds number in the case of eccentric cylinders. The effect of the transition on the axial flow between the cylinders is small. The critical speed for transition as deduced by Taylor, is little affected by moderate axial flows and is increased by eccentricity. The effect of critical condition on the axial‐flow characteristics of the bearing system appears to be negligible, again for moderate axial flows. Assuming that the results can be extrapolated to clearances applicable to bearing operation, the main conclusion of this paper is that the breakdown of laminar flow, which is a practical possibility in very high‐speed bearings, is delayed by eccentric operation.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to develop a simulating model of a journal porous metal bearing under elastohydrodynamic conditions and combined (radial, friction and thermal) load distribution and to carry out structural optimization.

Design/methodology/approach

The structure analysis is carried out for each kind of load separately and for the combined load distribution of the bearing, where a dynamically loaded porous metal bearing is simulated. This simulating model is developed by finite elements method using the structure analysis module of the CATIA V5 software. Further, a parameter optimization of a porous metal bearing is presented considering the elastic deformations of the bearing shell.

Findings

It is revealed that the bearing, even at points with maximum displacements, could not reach the mounting clearance value during its operational life. Relatively small bearing dimensions produce very high values of eigenfrequency response (over 150 kHz) and common dynamic loads met in all sorts of sliding bearing are not dangerous for bearing damage compared with static loads. In the stage of structural optimization based on the correlation between stress and geometric bearing parameters like wall thickness and outer diameter, the influence of finite element dimension on calculated results can be also analyzed and a proper choice of the latter is achieved.

Research limitations/implications

The present porous bearing optimization model with the aid of CATIA V5 module for optimum design uses only single objective optimization. For a complete optimum design a multi‐objective optimization has to be carried out.

Practical implications

The analysis under dynamic load conditions proved that relatively small dimensions of bearing commonly used in micro technique and precision mechanics result in extended safe and reliable operation.

Originality/value

This paper provides a methodology for bearing stress and deformation analysis in the elastic range and on the basis of this analysis it is possible to develop an optimization model for porous bearings offering help to designers for the selection of optimal bearing dimensions considering the bearing load caused by dynamic radial force, friction and temperature variation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe a method permitting the creation of a realistic model of spherical roller bearing with the aim of determining contact stress and fatigue life based on dynamic loading conditions. The paper also aims to recognize the effect of tolerance values on contact stress and fatigue life. Motion and load transmission in spherical roller bearing occurs within the assembly by elliptical curved contacting surfaces. The stress produced by the transmitted load would be very high because of least contacting area between these surfaces.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper describes a methodology to determine contact stress using analytically as well as finite element method for spherical roller bearing. The comparison for the both each approach for contact stress at different loading condition is carried out. Prediction of fatigue life based on dynamic loading conditions for bearing is also determined using finite element model. The effect on induced contact stress and fatigue life by varying tolerances on inner race dimensions have been found out.

Findings

The paper suggests that the maximum stress produces at the start or end of the contacting arc under static loading condition in spherical roller bearing. The analytical and finite element approach is in good agreement. The fatigue life prediction is useful for selecting loading conditions for various applications of double row spherical roller bearing. Tolerance level at inner ring raceway radius is kept high because of manufacturing constrain of complex curvature geometric shape.

Research limitations/implications

The present approach does not consider dynamic loading conditions for contact stress analysis. Therefore, researchers are encouraged to analyze the effect of wear, lubrication and other tribological aspects on bearing life.

Originality/value

The paper includes determination of contact stress and prediction of fatigue life for spherical roller bearing using analytical as well as finite element approach. The tolerance values at inner race are identified as per manufacturing constraint based on contact stress and fatigue life.

Abstract

Purpose

The non-circular journal bearings may be used over circular journal bearings because of their superior thermal stability. The paper aims at experimental study of thermal performance of two different true elliptical and orthogonally displaced non-circular journal bearing profiles.

Design/methodology/approach

The experiments have been conducted on a specially designed test rig which simultaneously evaluates oil film pressure and temperature along the circumference of non-circular journal bearing. The tests are conducted for the designed true elliptical and orthogonally displaced journal bearing at three different rotational speeds of 2,000, 3,000 and 4,000 rpm under the influence of steadily applied load varied from 0.5 to 2.0 kN. The data collected during experimentation have been used to evaluate thermal performance parameters such as maximum pressure, flow rate and effective temperature of the bearings under study.

Findings

It has been observed experimentally that two lobes of pressure and temperature have been obtained for both the elliptical and orthogonally displaced journal bearing. The negative pressure zone (cavitation area) has been observed to be reduced along the circumference for both the journal bearings which results in less thermal degradation of an oil as compared to circular journal bearing. The oil film pressure and temperature increases with the increase in radial load of both the bearings. The maximum temperature rise of oil film is more in case of elliptical bearing as compared to the orthogonally displaced bearing.

Originality/value

The experimental data presented in this paper will help the designers to select such kind of non-circular journal bearing for various applications. The designed bearings have resulted in reduced cavitation zone and two positive pressure lobes have been observed which may result in application of such bearings as an alternate for circular journal bearing.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to theoretically analyze an innovative form of variable bearing configuration having four pads with unique adjustability principle operated under journal misaligned conditions. The parameters such as load positions, degrees of misalignment (DM) and pad adjustment configurations influencing the steady-state performance of the four-pad adjustable bearing are detailed in this paper.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed adjustable pad geometry possesses the ability to undergo radial and tilt motions in both inward and outward directions. Analysis is carried out by considering journal misalignment in vertical and horizontal planes with bearing modelled for load-on-pad and load-between-pad configurations. The film thickness equation derived to incorporate the radial and tilt adjustment parameters is further modified to accommodate the different load orientations and misaligned journal conditions. The pressure field equation is solved by applying finite-difference technique combined with Gauss Siedel iterative method.

Findings

At higher DM, peak pressures generated in the minimum film thickness region near the pad ends highly influences the bearing load carrying capacity. Results indicated that the adjustable four-pad bearing geometry is highly efficient in withstanding the journal misalignment by radially displacing and tilting the four pads in negative directions.

Originality/value

For bearing designers, this research highlights the importance of considering the misalignment factor during the design stages of an adjustable journal bearing. The proposed adjustability concept is proven to be effective enough to improve the bearing performance and, in turn, withstand the journal misalignment.

The study aims to the distribution rule of lubricating oil film of full ceramic ball bearing and improve its performance and life.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to the distribution rule of lubricating oil film of full ceramic ball bearing and improve its performance and life.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper established an analysis model based on the fluid–solid conjugate heat transfer theory for full ceramic ball bearings. The distribution of flow, temperature and pressure field of bearings under variable working conditions is analyzed. Meanwhile, the mathematical model of elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) of full ceramic ball bearings is established. The numerical analysis is used to study the influence of variable working conditions on the lubricant film thickness and pressure distribution of bearings. The temperature rise test of full ceramic ball bearing under oil lubrication was carried out to verify the correctness of simulation results.

Findings

As the speed increased, the oil volume fraction in full ceramic ball bearing decreased and the surface pressure of rolling element increased. The temperature rise of full ceramic ball bearings increases with increasing speed and load. The lubricant film thickness of full ceramic ball bearing is positively correlated with speed and negatively correlated with load. The pressure of lubricating film is positively correlated with speed and load. The test shows that the higher inner ring speed and radial load, the higher the steady-state temperature rise of full ceramic ball bearing. The test results are in high agreement with simulation results.

Originality/value

Based on the fluid–solid conjugate heat transfer theory and combined with Reynolds equation, lubricating oil film thickness formula, viscosity temperature and viscosity pressure formula. The thermal analysis model and EHL mathematical model of ceramic ball bearings are established. The flow field, temperature field and pressure field distribution of the full ceramic ball bearing are determined. And the thickness and pressure distribution of lubricating oil film in the contact area of full ceramic ball bearing were determined.

Abstract

Purpose

Fix-position preloading, centrifugal force and higher temperatures cause the bearing units in angular contact ball bearings to expand, changing the contact load and affecting bearing life. This study aims to examine the effect of thermal and centrifugal expansion on the fatigue life of fix-position preloaded angular contact ball bearings in high-speed operating conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

The contact loads on the inner and outer bearing rings were resolved according to the thermal and centrifugal expansion factors in the quasi-static position preloading model. The pressure and frictional stress distribution were used to calculate the subsurface stress in the contact area, while the Zaretsky model was used to determine the relative fatigue life of the inner and outer bearing rings.

Findings

Under fix-position bearing preloading, thermal and centrifugal expansion significantly affected the contact load and relative fatigue life. At the same axial preload, the inner ring contact load was higher than the outer ring contact load, with a maximum difference of 132.3%. The decrease in the inner ring relative life exceeded the outer ring contact load, with a maximum difference of 7.5%, compared to the absence of thermal and centrifugal expansion.

Originality/value

This study revealed the influence of thermal and centrifugal expansion on the fatigue life of angular contact ball bearings in high-speed service conditions.
