Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to critically examine the anti-money laundering measures of the UK and Nigeria, to determine what the best approach is. The best approach is likely the one that strikes a fair balance between protecting the financial system against money laundering and promoting financial inclusion.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper relies mainly on primary and secondary data drawn from the public domain. It also relies on documentary research.
Findings
This paper critically analysed the anti-money laundering measures of the UK and Nigeria to determine that the anti-money laundering measures of Nigeria does not strike a fair balance between protecting the financial system against money laundering and promoting financial inclusion because it does not expressly provide for verification of a customer’s identity at the account opening stage for low risk accounts. The paper, however, determined that the anti-money laundering measures of the UK does strike a fair balance between protecting the financial system against money laundering and promoting financial inclusion because it requires customer identification and verification before the establishment of a business relationship for customers who want to open a basic bank account.
Research limitations/implications
This paper focuses on the anti-money laundering and financial inclusion measures in the UK’s Payment Accounts Regulations 2015 and the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism in Banks and Other Financial Institutions in Nigeria) Regulations, 2013.
Originality/value
This paper offers a critical analysis of the anti-money laundering and financial inclusion measures of the UK and Nigeria as provided in the UK’s Payment Accounts Regulations 2015 and the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism in Banks and Other Financial Institutions in Nigeria) Regulations, 2013. The paper will provide recommendations on how the measures could be strengthened. This is the only article to adopt this kind of approach.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to theorize the institutional pillars of management accounting function.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper adopts a comparative case study approach.
Findings
Institutional pillars of management accounting are explored on the basis of two longitudinal case studies. Competitive/economic forces and three analytical elements of institutional theory are composing institutions: regulative, normative and cultural‐cognitive pillars. Each element is important, and all of them may work in combination, but they operate through distinctive mechanisms and processes. This paper illustrates how they provide the basis for compliance, order and the legitimacy of not the whole organization, nor of the management accounting systems but of the management accounting function. This “organizational legitimacy” of management accounting function may provide one potential additional explanation for the change and stability of management accounting in organizations.
Originality/value
This paper creates an institutional interpretation of accounting change or stability at the level of an accounting function. It illustrates how the pressure for change or stability in management accounting is collectively constituted in organisations, how it is given meaning and how individuals are making sense of things, i.e. how accounting is institutionally embedded.

Abstract
Purpose
To understand the financial services experience and consumption in Nigeria from the perspectives of both the customers and managers. This study aims to explore this under-researched area and contribute towards a transformative financial service in the country.
Design/methodology/approach
Semi-structured interviews with 26 bank customers and seven top bank executives.
Findings
A conceptual framework, which has emerged from the analysis of the results, revealed three overarching factors that shape these experiences from the perspective of both consumers and managers – service maintenance, service technology and service dynamics.
Practical implications
For sustainable service maintenance, bank executives need to increase the overall level of transparency in their operations, particularly regarding bank charges, to ensure that customers are not subjected to hidden and unnecessary charges. The use of technology in service provision and delivery should play a prominent role. Managers should also provide innovative and user-friendly technology, communicating with customers and raising awareness of the benefits. Customers who are reluctant to adopt the technology should be educated and reassured. Recognising the service dynamics, managers should improve customer services and relationships, effectively manage the mobile money agent relationship and market new and relevant products to their target audience.
Social implications
The understanding of the financial services experience and consumption of citizens and residents in the demonstrate how the appropriate programmes and policies that enhance financial inclusion could be introduced and implemented in the country. It enables financial service managers to improve their services to their customers and policymakers to develop timely, relevant and appropriate policies to address and/or bridge the identified gaps in financial inclusion. The understanding of the financial services experience and consumption of citizens and residents in the demonstrate how the appropriate programmes and policies that enhance financial inclusion could be introduced and implemented in the country.
Originality/value
Through the sampling, this paper reiterates the need for consumer engagement and collaborative customer-provider relationships in redesigning financial services. This aligns with the transformative research agenda, which aims to increase access to financial services, decrease disparity and ensure consumers’ financial well-being.

Abstract
Deregulation and the emergence of new forms of technology have created highly competitive market conditions which have had a critical impact upon consumer behaviour. Bank providers must, therefore, attempt to better understand their customers in an attempt not only to anticipate but also to influence and determine consumer buying behaviour. The paper accordingly presents and develops a model which attempts to articulate and classify consumer behaviour in the purchasing of financial products and services. The theoretical insights generated by this model are then used to examine qualitative research data gained from focus group discussions on consumers’ attitudes to their financial providers and their financial products. Finally, these findings are examined for the potential insights they provide to bank providers attempting to identify appropriate strategies which are conducive to increased customer retention and profitability.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to investigate the relationship between financial inclusion and sustainable economic development in Indonesia by exploring the potential impact of Takaful. Specifically, the study seeks to examine the feasibility of leveraging Takaful as a means to foster financial inclusion and drive economic growth in Indonesia.
Design/methodology/approach
This study uses a qualitative analysis methodology, specifically using content analysis techniques, to investigate the relationship between financial inclusion and sustainable economic growth in Indonesia, focussing on the role of Takaful. The content analysis enables a systematic study of the data to identify trends and topics pertinent to Takaful and its potential to advance financial inclusion.
Findings
The study’s results reveal a direct causal link between economic growth and achieving financial inclusion through the use of Takaful. The findings also indicate a positive correlation between the increased presence of Takaful markets and accelerated economic growth.
Research limitations/implications
The study examines only the use of Takaful in achieving financial inclusion and sustainable economic growth in Indonesia. Nonetheless, the practical implications of this research are substantial, as they highlight the potential of Takaful to foster financial inclusion and stimulate economic growth in Indonesia.
Practical implications
This study contributes to the limited body of research on the relationship between financial inclusion and economic growth in Indonesia, specifically in the context of Takaful.
Originality/value
This study’s value lies in its exploration of an under-researched area, providing crucial insights into the potential of Takaful to promote financial inclusion and drive economic growth in Indonesia. The social implications of this study are also noteworthy, as increased financial inclusion and economic growth can positively affect poverty reduction, job creation and overall societal well-being in Indonesia.

Abstract
Purpose
The paper aims to show how the introduction of the concept of universal service in the French telecommunications sector was impacted by the existence of a strong national tradition of public services. It also aims to show that universal service, as it is defined by the European telecom regulatory framework, was not the only possible set‐up. It also seeks to show how the concept of universal service was adapted to the French national situation and spread beyond the telecommunications sector.
Design/methodology/approach
The approach of the paper is chronological, starting with an analysis of the French tradition of public services and then showing how the discussion developed in France on the topic of universal service in the telecommunications sector. Then the paper deals with the practical implementation of universal service in the telecommunications sector and other sectors in France.
Findings
The paper shows that even though the French traditional views on public services did not make it easy to implement the European version of universal service in the telecommunications sector, it nevertheless happened. Universal service even spread beyond the telecommunications sector in France.
Research limitations/implications
The paper concentrates on French views on the topic and does not study the opinions of other stakeholders (the European Commission, other member states) as regards the French national tradition of public services.
Practical implications
The paper can be used as a guide to ongoing discussions on the evolution of universal service in Europe as it provides alternate views on the topic.
Originality/value
The paper provides a comprehesive review of the topic.

Abstract
Purpose
Anecdotal evidence indicates that one of the more difficult issues faced by accounting students is the understanding and preparation of the statement of cash flows (SCF). This study investigates the impact of different instruction methods for covering the statement on student learning outcomes. Currently, two prominent intermediate-level financial accounting texts cover the SCF primarily in one end-of-text chapter, a massed presentation. The current study argues that the SCF is a topic that is cross-sectional in nature, and is applicable to the textbook material on the accounting transactions that are spread throughout the texts. In accordance with the spacing effect (Dempster, 1988), instruction of SCF material across the major recognition and measurement topic chapters, a spaced presentation format, potentially yields enhanced learning outcomes in comparison to the massed presentation.
Methodology/approach
Across three semesters of an intermediate-level financial accounting course, the SCF delivery format and coverage were varied in a 1 × 3 between-subjects experiment. The subjects completed an indirect-method SCF preparation task, which I analyzed across the three conditions.
Findings
Students learning the SCF presentation of intermediate-level transactions in a spaced presentation earned higher scores on the task compared to those learning the material in a massed format. Furthermore, the students exposed to the massed presentation performed no better than those not instructed on the material.
Research limitations/implications
I base my findings on the results of one assessment of the SCF in one course. Future research should consider various tasks related to the SCF at different course levels and across a variety of instructional techniques.
Originality/value
The results imply that changes to the delivery of SCF material could potentially produce benefits to student learning.

Abstract
Purpose
As one of the main purposes of financial statements is to provide relevant information for investors, relationships between share prices and accounting variables have been widely researched. Early studies focus mainly on earnings, but attention has turned in recent years to valuation models that include the book value of the equity. Many of these studies cite the residual income model as their theoretical base and, with the growing emphasis on shareholder value, residual income measures are more commonly used in the business community to track financial performance. Given such trends, the purpose of this paper is to review the theoretical background of the residual income model and discuss results of empirical studies that use it.
Design/methodology/approach
The study seeks an understanding of how published accounting information relates to share prices in the developed market in Asia, outside Japan. More specifically, the study aims to extend the international literature in market based accounting research by examining empirical evidence on relationships between share prices and the two summary accounting variables of equity book value and earnings for firms listed on the stock exchange in Malaysia.
Findings
The findings imply that, the two accounting variables summarising the balance sheet and the income statement, respectively, are significant factors in the valuation process, and that managers are justified in using the accounting system as a primary source of information for monitoring financial performance.
Originality/value
These findings should be of interest to other researchers, and to managers and investors who currently use or are planning to use residual income to monitor business performance.

In the last four years, since Volume I of this Bibliography first appeared, there has been an explosion of literature in all the main functional areas of business. This wealth of material poses problems for the researcher in management studies — and, of course, for the librarian: uncovering what has been written in any one area is not an easy task. This volume aims to help the librarian and the researcher overcome some of the immediate problems of identification of material. It is an annotated bibliography of management, drawing on the wide variety of literature produced by MCB University Press. Over the last four years, MCB University Press has produced an extensive range of books and serial publications covering most of the established and many of the developing areas of management.
