Abstract

TRIS (trials support measure) is a European Commission (EC)‐funded activity involved with co‐ordinating 25 EC‐funded “take‐up trial projects” to increase their impact and exploit their results. The take‐up trial projects, all of them now completed, involved the application of new technologies in 80 cultural institutions in Europe and have contributed to cultural innovation. After introducing the general context of the EC’s cultural heritage sector within which TRIS and the take‐up trial projects have been funded, this article describes a selection of these projects, clustered according to their particular relevance to the world of museums, open‐air sites, libraries and archive institutions. The paper then provides an overview of the technologies with which the projects have experimented.

Abstract

As part of a more extensive study designed to establish the characteristics of women who have succeeded in the male‐dominated world of management and entrepreneurship three questionnaires were used to assess gender identity, creative style and political style. These characteristics are thought to have a fundamental influence upon the career behaviour of women. Three main objectives are put forward: first, to present a number of ideas about the possible political style, creative style and gender identity of women managers and entrepreneurs; secondly, to present a discussion of the findings and their significance in relation to the behaviour of women at work and, finally, to attempt to illustrate that all three measures identify a common characteristic, that is, “independence of thought” which it is suggested may be essential for women operating in the male‐dominated world of work.

Abstract

The following classified, annotated list of titles is intended to provide reference librarians with a current checklist of new reference books, and is designed to supplement the RSR review column, “Recent Reference Books,” by Frances Neel Cheney. “Reference Books in Print” includes all additional books received prior to the inclusion deadline established for this issue. Appearance in this column does not preclude a later review in RSR. Publishers are urged to send a copy of all new reference books directly to RSR as soon as published, for immediate listing in “Reference Books in Print.” Reference books with imprints older than two years will not be included (with the exception of current reprints or older books newly acquired for distribution by another publisher). The column shall also occasionally include library science or other library related publications of other than a reference character.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the findings of a faculty survey, collaborative efforts between the Library, the Information Technology Services, and the School of Nursing at Auburn University at Montgomery, and methods to persuade faculty to deliver the Library to their students using WebCT.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey was distributed to 102 faculty with WebCT shells residing on the campus server. Follow‐up interviews were conducted, and the Library's server log was examined to determine the number of referrals to the Library originating from WebCT. A case study using the recommendations is included.

Research limitations/implications

Research was limited to a single university campus. Similar studies elsewhere would likely support the need for librarian involvement in course management system supported courses.

Findings

While a small percentage of faculty actually linked to the Library, a significant number indicated interest in doing so. Increase in Library access through School of Nursing WebCT courses supports the conclusion that librarians must be proactive in developing collaborations.

Practical implications

Similar collaborative efforts and the methods suggested in this paper can be used by librarians elsewhere to promote library use and development of information literacy skills utilizing campus course management systems.

Originality/value

This paper indicates that faculty are willing to integrate the campus library into their courses if they are educated about the process, and it offers suggestions for reaching faculty.

Abstract

Library administration is a balancing act: leading and managing the library and its employees while simultaneously responding to initiatives and demands of institutional leaders and/or trustees. This chapter provides an overview of emotional self-regulation, its importance to library administrators, and the roles that intentional reflective practice and mindfulness play in adaptive emotional self-regulation. There were few articles exploring the impact of intentional reflective practice or mindfulness in libraries, particularly with respect to emotional self-regulation. Much of the reviewed literature was from other disciplines; however, there was much to be applied to library administrators. There are a variety of techniques for intentional reflective practice that library administrators can use to improve emotional self-regulation (as well as improve other aspects of performance). There are fewer techniques to increase mindfulness, though there is stronger evidence of the benefits of mindfulness meditation on emotional self-regulation. This chapter is the first review applying intentional reflective practice and mindfulness on the emotional self-regulation of library administrators.

Abstract

Details have now been released of the six research efforts, developing new technologies for digital libraries, which are being funded for four years by the US government. The Digital Library Project's focus is ‘dramatically to advance the means to collect, store, and organise information in digital forms, and make it available for searching, retrieval and processing via communication networks — all in user‐friendly ways.’
