Abstract

This paper discusses findings from an exploratory study concerning internal marketing in the UK retail bank industry. In order to enhance efficiency and provide motivation to employees many UK banks have adopted internal marketing. The paper adopts the approach of first defining the generic research area, and then describing the research approach. It is concerned with first identifying the rhetoric of internal marketing as employed in UK banks, and second with exploring the practice of reality of internal marketing as practiced within UK banks. The paper is grounded in Mason's view that theoretical positions or data explanations move from the particular context of internal marketing views and expand within banks to the general theoretical contribution to be made. Findings are explored via two extant relationships and three anomalies based on the data analysis. Evidence from the study suggests that internal marketing is being taken seriously but in such a way as to be managerially, not employee, oriented. At best, internal marketing within this industry is regarded as a form of window dressing or part of the trappings of marketing, rather than having any substantive base or rationale insofar as employees are concerned.

Abstract

International banks are aggressively utilising the marketing concept in order to respond to an increasingly competitive industry. Banks in the Middle East, as in many developing regions, are seeking to become major players in the marketplace. Unique cultural priorities, lifestyles, buyer decision‐making factors, economic development goals, legal environment, and religious conditions require utilisation of appropriate bank marketing strategies that respond to the region's needs. A model of marketing innovation for managers to evaluate environmental factors and adoption/ implementation processes associated with survival and growth of the Arab banking industry is provided.

Abstract

Bank marketing in India has yet to progress beyond the stage of pronouncement making by top management. This has been reflected in a study of 36 banks, showing that there is a lack of representation of the marketing function in banks' organisational structure; fragmentation of marketing activities, absence of marketing databases, and lack of trained marketing manpower. The pivot of banking lies in deposit mobilisation in which India still offers wide opportunities as it has a large number of unbanked prospects; effective bank marketing can provide the answer, if an adequate infrastructure of organisation and skills is built up.

Abstract

Discusses the changing role of the branch bank manager in relation to the bank services marketing, and describes results of research carried out into the bank manager's role, and its re‐evaluation. Says that there is a need for a more positive approach to the challenges of marketing at the branch level. Recognises that personal communications between managers and customers is of major importance. Posits that the bank manger has basically a similar role to a salesman (one‐to‐one situations) although still some way apart. Maintains that in order to accomplish all the tasks discussed there are three basic requirements to be fulfilled: time, ability, and motivation. Attempts to establish a view of the role of the bank manager in personal communication processes. Concludes that the manager must possess the resources in order to perform effectively in the marketing role, although, sometimes, financial ability is lacking and the absence of total motivation towards marketing has already been discussed.

Abstract

The British retail banking market has changed markedly since the beginning of the 1970s, and important trends and developments have increased the competitive pressures facing banks. The whole nature of competition in British retail banking has altered. New competitors and new forms of competition have appeared with increasing rapidity. These changes and the associated pressures on banks have intensified during the 1980s. At the same time, banks have increased the comparative importance of retail banking within their strategies. These pressures and their associated implications for British retail banking strategy are explored. It is emphasised that marketing will need increasingly to dominate bank strategies in retail banking. This orientation towards marketing has important strategic and managerial consequences for banks.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to provide an overview of bank marketing through a retrospection of the International Journal of Bank Marketing (IJBM), the leading journal for bank marketing.

Design/methodology/approach

This study conducts a bibliometric analysis to analyze the performance and intellectual structure of bank marketing literature curated through IJBM between 1983 and 2020.

Findings

This study sheds light on the growing influence and impact of IJBM on the field of bank marketing through six major clusters (themes): relationship marketing and service quality in banking and financial services, consumer behavior in banking and financial services, customer satisfaction and loyalty in banking and financial services, electronic or online banking and financial services, Islamic banking and financial services, and service failure and recovery in banking and financial services.

Research limitations/implications

Though this study offers a state-of-the-art overview of bank marketing through the lens of IJBM, the insights remain limited to the accuracy and availability of bibliographic data of the journals from Scopus.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors' knowledge, this study represents the first objective assessment of bank marketing and IJBM. Thus, this study should be useful to past and prospective authors, editorial board members, editors, readers and reviewers to gain a one-stop understanding about bank marketing through the contributions of IJBM.

Abstract

The librarian and researcher have to be able to uncover specific articles in their areas of interest. This Bibliography is designed to help. Volume IV, like Volume III, contains features to help the reader to retrieve relevant literature from MCB University Press' considerable output. Each entry within has been indexed according to author(s) and the Fifth Edition of the SCIMP/SCAMP Thesaurus. The latter thus provides a full subject index to facilitate rapid retrieval. Each article or book is assigned its own unique number and this is used in both the subject and author index. This Volume indexes 29 journals indicating the depth, coverage and expansion of MCB's portfolio.
