Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the challenges and opportunities of the luxury market in Iran as an Islamic country. The focus is on religion as a factor that can make some challenges for luxury products, and then to find opportunities or similarities in Muslim markets due to the luxury consumption.

Design/methodology/approach

As it is a literature review article, the authors used past research works and compared different perspectives that exist about the topic.

Findings

It was concluded that although implementing a market-oriented culture is central to the marketers’ success, it is not right to just focus on religion as a separating factor that can isolate the Muslim’s market. It was suggested to change one's viewpoint and analyze the market with a broader vision that can bring innovative ideas and also find similarities and differentiations between Islamic luxury markets with non-Islamic luxury markets.

Originality/value

Muslim consumers have a huge purchasing power in countries such as Egypt, Iran, India, Malaysia, Morocco, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and South Africa. However, there is limited academic literature addressing luxury products in the context of these markets. Luxury purchase motivation is predominantly based on Western thoughts and markets. As Iran as a Muslim country can be an appropriate target market of luxury goods, analyzing the challenges and opportunities can be a useful guide to be successful in this market.

Abstract

Purpose

Consumer behavior will become more heterogeneous because of cultural differences. This phenomenon makes it increasingly important to understand values of national cultures and their impact on consumer behavior. The purpose of this paper is to review cultural factors with a focus on religious factors that influence the Iranian consumers' behavior during evaluation of luxury value dimensions.

Design/methodology/approach

Hofstede's model of national culture and research papers pertaining to religious influence on consumer behavior are applied to understand consumers' behavior toward luxury consumption in Iran as an Islamic country.

Findings

Findings support the notion that there are cultural differences between consumers in evaluating luxury value dimensions. As the study is about Iranian Muslim consumers, the role of religion in consumer behavior has also been debated. These findings are useful for domestic and international marketers toward a better understanding of Iranian consumers' luxury value perception based on cultural aspects.

Practical implications

The research outcomes should assist industry and business practitioners to understand the behavior of Iranian consumers and by using the findings formulate strategies that enhance their competitiveness in the market. Similarly, the research should enrich marketing literature by providing empirical evidence on Iranian consumption behavior from the perspective of the Muslim population. Research provides a better understanding of cultural factors that affect Iranian consumer behavior toward luxury value perception.

Originality/value

This is the first academic study analyzing the dimensions of luxury values, including the consideration of cultural and religious factors that influence Iranian's consumer behavior. The results can be seen as the first step for domestic and international marketers toward a better understanding of Iranian consumers' luxury value evaluation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the nature of emotion, self-esteem and life satisfaction tendencies amongst Iranian Muslim consumers when making impulse purchases.

Design/methodology/approach

Questionnaires were distributed amongst female Muslim participants at a shopping centre in Yazd, Iran – each of which were selected using cluster and random sampling methods. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and structural equation modelling techniques, where LISREL software was used to measure the direct and indirect relationships between variables.

Findings

Within the sample, there was a direct causal relationship between impulse buying tendencies, impulse buying behaviour and purchasing. Second, there was a negative relationship between self-esteem and life-satisfaction within impulse buying tendencies. Finally, a positive relationship exists between emotion and impulse buying tendencies, which elicits impulse buying behaviour culminating in purchases. Emotion drives these consumers towards dissonance-reducing behaviour, which mediates low self-esteem and life satisfaction – through consumerism as a form of retail therapy. Some of the items purchased on impulse, that fulfilled this role, were hijabs (headscarves) and mantos (a type of tunic/shirt-dress/coat common in Iran).

Research limitations/implications

The hijab is worn by Muslim females across the globe. However, the manto is an item of clothing worn almost exclusively by Iranian females. Therefore, it is likely that Muslim females in different geographies may exhibit similar behavioural traits, but their consumption patterns would substitute this item with a different one, such as an abaya or jilbab, for example.

Originality/value

Whilst the notion of retail therapy is widely understood, the novel contribution of this study lies in highlighting that the purchase of clothing such as hijabs and mantos by Iranian Muslim females is not just driven by rational and emotional decision-making seeking to fulfil religious obligations. There are cases where these religious artefacts are used to raise feelings of self-esteem and life satisfaction within the same individuals.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the link between research and practice within the context of Islamic marketing (IM), an issue which is controversial in the literature. It offers reasonable answers that bridge the gap between research and practice, as well as the way to mitigate it.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a critical approach to analytically review the literature on IM, and relates it to research and practice.

Findings

The study finds that the advancement of knowledge on IM necessitates research and practice. There is a gap between research and practice which evolved from decades of objectivity between researchers and practitioners in the field of IM. It is necessary to search for some practicable solutions that can narrow the gap between theory and practice.

Research limitations/implications

The basic limitation of this study is that IM has not yet emerged as a distinct discipline. Hence, there is limited study on IM issues in the context of research and practice.

Originality/value

This study makes essential contributions to the chastisement by research and practice, a theoretically new field of IM subject.
