Abstract

Rich collections of conference proceedings are available in major science and technology (S & T) libraries in India. Unfortunately, no bibliographic tool is available to provide access to these information sources at national/regional level at present. Recognising this fact, Indian National Scientific Documentation Centre (INSDOC) has set up a project of creating a database and publishing a union catalogue of S & T conference proceedings available within the country. In the first phase, 30 major research and development institutions in the city of Bangalore, South India have been covered and the first volume of the union catalogue was published in 1991. It is printed using a desktop publishing system and the database is available on Unesco's CDS/ISIS mini‐micro version 2.3.

Abstract

Information for regularly‐issued publications held on a database, such as accessions lists, bulletins and directories, can be downloaded with embedded codes used for word‐processing commands, desktop publishing flags or a markup language. In this way the information can be formatted automatically for style and layout to facilitate printing and to enhance the final appearance. This article describes how a series of directories has been produced by the Association of Commonwealth Universities in this way using CAIRS information retrieval software and how the data must be tidied up once it has been exported from CAIRS. CAIRS' index generation facilities are also described.

Abstract

Purpose

The growing environmental awareness all through the world has motivated a standard change toward planning and designing better materials having good performance, which are very much suited to the environmental factors. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact on mechanical, thermal and water absorption properties of sawdust-based composites reinforced by epoxy, and the amount of sawdust in each form.

Design/methodology/approach

Manufacturing of the sawdust reinforced epoxy composites is the main area of the research for promoting the green composite by having good mechanical properties, biodegradability or many applications. Throughout this research work, the authors emphasize the importance of explaining the methodology for the evaluation of the mechanical and water absorption properties of the sawdust reinforced epoxy composites used by researchers.

Findings

In this paper, a comprehensive review of the mechanical properties of sawdust reinforced epoxy composite is presented. This study is reported about the use of different Wt.% of sawdust composites prepared by different processes and their mechanical, thermal and water absorption properties. It is studied that after optimum filler percentage, mechanical, thermal properties gradually decrease, but water absorption property increases with Wt.% of sawdust. The changes in the microstructure are studied by using scanning electron microscopy.

Originality/value

The novelty of this study lies in its use of a systematic approach that offers a perspective on choosing suitable processing parameters for the fabrication of composite materials for persons from both industry and academia. A study of sawdust reinforced epoxy composites guides new researchers in the fabrication and characterization of the materials.

Abstract

Purpose

Friction stir welding (FSW) is considered an environmentally sound process compared to traditional fusion welding processes. It is a complex process in which various parameters influence weld strength. Therefore, it is essential to identify the best parameter settings for achieving the desired weld quality. This paper aims to investigate the multi-response optimization of process parameters of the FSWed 6061-T6 aluminum (Al) alloy.

Design/methodology/approach

The input process parameters related to FSW have been sorted out from a detailed literature survey. The properties of weldments such as yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, percentage elongation and microhardness have been used to evaluate weld quality. The process parameters have been optimized using the Taguchi-based grey relational analysis (GRA) methodology. Taguchi L16 orthogonal array has been considered to design the experiments. The effect of input parameters on output responses was also determined by the analysis of variance (ANOVA) method. Finally, to corroborate the results, a confirmatory experiment was carried out using the optimized parameters from the study.

Findings

The ANOVA result indicates that the tool rotation speed was the most significant parameter followed by tool pin profile and welding speed. From the confirmation test, it was observed that the optimum FSW process parameters predicted by the Taguchi method improved the grey relational grade by 13.52%. The experimental result also revealed that the Taguchi-based GRA method is feasible in finding solutions to multi-response optimization problems in the FSW process.

Originality/value

The present study is unique in the multi-response optimization of FSWed 6061-T6 Al alloy using the Taguchi and GRA methodology. The weld material having better mechanical properties is essential for the material industry.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to determine the use of BLA along with SiC as economical reinforcements to enhance the mechanical behavior of hybrid composite. The purpose of this research is the development of cost-effective aluminum hybrid metal matrix composites.

Design/methodology/approach

The present research work investigation evaluated the mechanical properties of Al-4.5%Cu alloy, Al-4.5Cu/10SiC, Al-4.5Cu/10SiC/2BLA and Al-4.5Cu/10SiC/4BLA composites by the Stir casting method. The fabricated composites were analyzed using optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and hardness and tensile test.

Findings

The microstructure modification with the addition of reinforcement particles in the matrix alloy and clear interface in between matrix and particles are observed. The density of the composite increased with the addition of SiC and decreased with the addition of BLA in comparison with that of matrix alloy. The hardness and tensile strength of the single-reinforced composite and hybrid composites improved with the addition of reinforcement particles. The strengthening of composites was due to load-bearing capacity of reinforcement particles over the matrix alloy and increased dislocation density of composites materials. The tensile failure mechanism of the composites is reveled with SEM analysis.

Practical implications

The papers reports the development of cost-effective and light weight aluminum hybrid composites with remarkable enhancement in the mechanical and tribological properties with the addition of BLA as economical reinforcement along with SiC.

Originality/value

The density, hardness and tensile values of fabricated aluminium composites were presented in this paper for the use in the engineering applications where the weight and cost are consider as a primary factors.
