Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to test the applicability and the performance of an approach called logical analysis of data (LAD) on the detection of faults in rotating machinery using vibration signals.

Design/methodology/approach

LAD is a supervised learning data mining technique that relies on finding patterns in a binary database to generate decision functions. The hypothesis is that a LAD‐based decision model can be used as an effective tool for automatic detection of faults in rolling element bearings. A novel Multiple Integer Linear Programming approach is used to generate patterns for the LAD decision model. Frequency and time‐based features are extracted from rotor bearing vibration signals and are pre‐processed to be suitable for use with LAD.

Findings

The results show good classification accuracy with both time and frequency features.

Practical implications

The diagnostic tool implemented in the form of software in a production or operations maintenance environment can be very helpful to maintenance experts as it reveals the patterns that lead to the diagnosis in interpretable terms which facilitates efforts to understand the reasons behind the components' failure.

Originality/value

The proposed modifications to the LAD‐based decision model which is being tested for the first time in the field of fault detection in rotating machinery lead to improved accuracy results in addition to the added value of result interpretability due to this distinctive property of LAD.

Abstract

Purpose

To solve the problem that the traditional received signal strength indicator real-time location method does not test the attenuation characteristics of the electromagnetic wave transmission in the location area, which cannot guarantee the accuracy of the location, resulting in a large location error.

Design/methodology/approach

At present, the compressed sensing (CS) reconstruction algorithm can be roughly divided into the following two categories (Zhouzhou and Fubao, 2014; Lagunas et al., 2016): one is the greedy iterative algorithm proposed for combinatorial optimization problems, which includes matching pursuit algorithm (MP), positive cross matching tracking algorithm (OMP), greedy matching tracking algorithm, segmented orthogonal matching tracking algorithm (StOMP) and so on. The second kind is the convex optimization algorithm, which also called the optimization approximation method. The common method is the basic tracking algorithm, which uses the norm instead of the norm to solve the optimization problem. In this paper, based on the piecewise orthogonal MP algorithm, the improved StOMP reconstruction algorithm is obtained.

Findings

In this paper, the MP algorithm (OMP), the StOMP and the improved StOMP algorithm are used as simulation reconstruction algorithms to achieve the comparison of location performance. It can be seen that the estimated position of the target is very close to the original position of the target. It is concluded that the CS grid-based target stepwise location method in underground tunnel can accurately locate the target in such specific region.

Originality/value

In this paper, the offline fingerprint database in offline phase of location method is established and the measurement of the electromagnetic noise distribution in different localization areas is considered. Furthermore, the offline phase shares the work of the location process, which greatly reduces the algorithm complexity of the online phase location process and the power consumption of the reference node, meanwhile is easy to implement under the same conditions, as well as conforms to the location environment.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new design of the chart to catch smaller shifts in the process average as well as to maintain the simplicity like the Shewhart chart so that it may be applied at shopfloor level.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, a new chart with two strategies is proposed which can overcome the limitations of Shewhart, CUSUM and EWMA charts. The Shewhart chart uses only two control limits to arrive at a decision to accept the Null Hypothesis (H0) or Alternative Hypothesis (H1), but in the new chart, two more limits at “K” times sample standard deviation on both sides from center line have been introduced. These limits are termed warning limits. The first strategy is based on chi‐square distribution (CSQ), while the second strategy is based on the average of sample means (ASM).

Findings

The proposed chart with “strategy ASM” shows lower average run length (ARL) values than ARLs of variable parameter (VP) chart for most of the cases. The VP chart shows little better performance than the new chart; but at large sample sizes (n) of 12 and 16. The VSS chart also shows lower ARLs but at very large sample size, which should not be used because, as far as possible, samples should be taken from a lot produced under identical conditions. The inherent feature of the new chart is its simplicity, so that it can be used without difficulty at shopfloor level as it uses only a fixed sample size and fixed sampling interval but it is very difficult to set the various chart parameters in VP and VSS charts.

Research limitations/implications

A lot of effort has been expended to develop the new strategies for monitoring the process mean. Various assumptions and factors affecting the performance of the chart have been identified and taken into account. In the proposed design, the observations have been assumed independent of one another but the observations may also be assumed to be auto‐correlated with previous observations and performance of the proposed chart may be studied.

Originality/value

The research findings could be applied to various manufacturing and service industries as it is more effective than the Shewhart chart and simpler than the VP, VSS and CUSUM charts.

Abstract

Many jurisdictions fine illegal cartels using penalty guidelines that presume an arbitrary 10% overcharge. This article surveys more than 700 published economic studies and judicial decisions that contain 2,041 quantitative estimates of overcharges of hard-core cartels. The primary findings are: (1) the median average long-run overcharge for all types of cartels over all time periods is 23.0%; (2) the mean average is at least 49%; (3) overcharges reached their zenith in 1891–1945 and have trended downward ever since; (4) 6% of the cartel episodes are zero; (5) median overcharges of international-membership cartels are 38% higher than those of domestic cartels; (6) convicted cartels are on average 19% more effective at raising prices as unpunished cartels; (7) bid-rigging conduct displays 25% lower markups than price-fixing cartels; (8) contemporary cartels targeted by class actions have higher overcharges; and (9) when cartels operate at peak effectiveness, price changes are 60–80% higher than the whole episode. Historical penalty guidelines aimed at optimally deterring cartels are likely to be too low.
