Abstract
Contrasts generic concepts and roles of intra‐organisational performance measurement with concepts of supplier performance measurement. Presents indications from a study of five vehicle manufacturers in Europe with regards to their practices of supplier evaluation in the area of logistics. Based on a categorisation of functions of intra‐organisational performance measurement develops a conceptual framework describing the roles of supplier performance measurement in this context.

Abstract
This paper deals with two aspects of optical inspection in the automotive industry: machine vision and colour measurement. Machine vision, by smart camera or by personal computer and camera, is used for such tasks as gauging, part identification and presence monitoring. In conjunction with local area networks it facilitates part tracking and quality documentation. Two new colour measurement instruments, a robot‐mounted multi‐angle spectrophotometer and a solid state eight‐waveband instrument, are used to inspect the colour on car bodies and sub‐components, respectively.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to provide a conceptual framework and a scale development process, in order to address the reliability and validity in supply chain integration and environmental uncertainty constructs; in an effort to develop and revalidate scale metrics in different contexts.
Design/methodology/approach
Data for this study were collected for a small pre‐test survey in the Thai automotive industry. The measurement scales were pre‐assessed using the Q‐sort method. In addition, a preliminary test for predictive validity was evaluated using correlation analysis.
Findings
This study established an explanatory model and a corresponding instrument to conduct future research in supply chain integration. Dimensions/constructs, including supply chain integration, environmental uncertainty, and firm competitive capability are operationally defined in terms of their scale development process.
Practical implications
This study will provide a measurement scale for supply chain integration and uncertainty constructs. This will allow researchers to be confident and bring new insights when exploring supply chain integration under differing operational conditions.
Originality/value
The findings address additional steps required towards improved methodological aspects in terms of how to prevalidate and develop a measurement scale in various constructs within alternative domains.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate an optical‐based scanning modality for the real‐time measurements of automotive interior gaps.
Design/methodology/approach
The hardware is based on a charge‐coupled device detector acquiring a laser illumination. The laser is projected on multitude of substrates with different reflectivities and surface profiles; while the scanning is progressed manually through a hand‐held setup.
Findings
The proposed software identifies the optical gap location automatically and establishes a dynamic field of view.
Research limitations/implications
The study conducts a tool reliability and repeatability study that yield an accuracy of 0.08 mm and a repeatability of less than 6.5 percent as user bias. The developed hardware/software combination, when compared with two commercial systems; a 3D scanner and an industrially packaged sensor unit used for exterior gaps, which provided repeatability values of 24 and 17 percent, respectively, with accuracies of 1.5 and 0.34 mm.
Originality/value
New hardware and software are developed in combination to operate effectively on different deco finish and gap separations.

Purpose
Technological advances in recent years have led to the development and implementation of a variety of techniques and platforms in three‐dimensional (3D) metrology. These techniques include improvements in sensory capabilities, computational speed, flexibility in reporting, and ease of use. The purpose of this paper is to address several developments in this regard.
Design/methodology/approach
Metrology, or the science of measurement, continues to enjoy relevance and importance in the quality and handling of manufactured goods. In most instances, measurement requires a 3D quantification of an object's dimensions. These data are used for product quality or for robotic guidance applications.
Findings
As technology progresses, a snapshot of trends is presented in 2009. Notable amongst these trends are advances in sensory capabilities, computational speed, flexibility in reporting, and ease of use. These continuous improvements are helping to increase adoption curves in an ever‐competitive quality and cost driven, and increasingly international, manufacturing market. According to Paul Kellett, Director of Market Analysis at the Robotics Industries Association (www.robotics.org), there have been, in the past, typically three impediments to adoption: ease of use, cost, and performance of technology.
Originality/value
In conclusion, metrology and 3D trends are evolving continuously to equip manufacturers with enhanced tools for measurement, quality control, robot guidance and absolute accuracy. Much work lies ahead in the area of software for applications and specifically for vertical applications.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to examine empirically the relationships among industry environment, diversification motivations and corporate performance for a sample of Taiwanese automobile enterprises.
Design/methodology/approach
A 55‐item survey questionnaire was developed to obtain the responses from companies in the automobile industry in Taiwan. Independent sample t‐test and χ2 tests were employed to confirm the homogeneity between the respondents and non‐respondents by firm's characteristics, including by industry, number of employees, and capital.
Findings
The results suggest that industry environment has positive and significant impact on diversification motivations, and has positive but not significant impact on corporate performance. Diversification motivations has positive and significant impact on corporate performance. The results also indicate that firms of higher capital amounts have greater influence on diversification motivations and corporate performance, firms of publicly listed have greater influence on industry environment, diversification motivations and corporate performance and firms of higher degree of diversification have greater influence on diversification motivations only.
Research limitations/implications
Several limitations exist in this study. This study adopts the cross‐sectional research design and examines firms at one point time and because of the constraints of time and data availability, longitudinal research was not viable in this study. Also the amount of variation for some regression models is low.
Originality/value
The paper's results not only provide researchers with a theoretical basis for further research, but also provide top management teams with important data when engaging in diversification.
