Abstract

This article reviews the state of the art in automatic indexing, that is, automatic techniques for analysing and characterising documents, for manipulating their descriptions in searching, and for generating the index language used for these purposes. It concentrates on the literature from 1968 to 1973. Section I defines the topic and its context. Sections II and III consider work in syntax and semantics respectively in detail. Section IV comments on ‘indirect’ indexing. Section V briefly surveys operating mechanized systems. In Section VI major experiments in automatic indexing are reviewed, and Section VII attempts an overall conclusion on the current state of automatic indexing techniques.

Abstract

Purpose

Heritage is the latent part of a sustainable built environment. Conservation and preservation of heritage is one of the United Nations' (UN) sustainable development goals. Many social and natural factors seriously threaten heritage structures by deteriorating and damaging the original. Therefore, regular visual inspection of heritage structures is necessary for their conservation and preservation. Conventional inspection practice relies on manual inspection, which takes more time and human resources. The inspection system seeks an innovative approach that should be cheaper, faster, safer and less prone to human error than manual inspection. Therefore, this study aims to develop an automatic system of visual inspection for the built heritage.

Design/methodology/approach

The artificial intelligence-based automatic defect detection system is developed using the faster R-CNN (faster region-based convolutional neural network) model of object detection to build an automatic visual inspection system. From the English and Dutch cemeteries of Surat (India), images of heritage structures were captured by digital camera to prepare the image data set. This image data set was used for training, validation and testing to develop the automatic defect detection model. While validating this model, its optimum detection accuracy is recorded as 91.58% to detect three types of defects: “spalling,” “exposed bricks” and “cracks.”

Findings

This study develops the model of automatic web-based visual inspection systems for the heritage structures using the faster R-CNN. Then it demonstrates detection of defects of spalling, exposed bricks and cracks existing in the heritage structures. Comparison of conventional (manual) and developed automatic inspection systems reveals that the developed automatic system requires less time and staff. Therefore, the routine inspection can be faster, cheaper, safer and more accurate than the conventional inspection method.

Practical implications

The study presented here can improve inspecting the built heritages by reducing inspection time and cost, eliminating chances of human errors and accidents and having accurate and consistent information. This study attempts to ensure the sustainability of the built heritage.

Originality/value

For ensuring the sustainability of built heritage, this study presents the artificial intelligence-based methodology for the development of an automatic visual inspection system. The automatic web-based visual inspection system for the built heritage has not been reported in previous studies so far.

A number of techniques have been studied for the automatic assignment of controlled subject headings and classifications from free indexing. These techniques involve the automatic manipulation and truncation of the free‐index phrases assigned to a document and the use of a manually‐constructed thesaurus and automatically‐generated dictionaries together with statistical ranking and weighting methods. These are based on the use of a statistically‐generated ‘adhesion coefficient’ which reflects the degree of association between the free‐indexing terms, the controlled subject headings, and the classifications. By the analysis of a large sample of manually‐indexed documents the system generates dictionaries of free‐language and controlled‐language terms together with their associated classifications and adhesion coefficients. Having learnt from the manually‐indexed documents the system uses these dictionaries in the subsequent automatic classification procedure. The accuracy and cost‐effectiveness of the automatically‐assigned subject headings and classifications has been compared with that of the manual system. The results were encouraging and the costs comparable to those of a manual system.

Abstract

SUMMARY The paper reviews the requirements for all weather landing systems on a short‐haul jet from the aircraft manufacturer's point of view, with, of course, particular reference to the BAC One‐Eleven. The problems of producing a flexible system which will suit many different types of operator with differing operational environments is discussed. The basic provisions made in the aircraft and the basic automatic system for subsequent easy fitment of all weather landing systems are described and a number of possible alternative systems listed, which build up from the basic single autopilot to a fully automatic all weather landing system. The potentialities of each of these systems in terms of removing existing obstacles to lower minima are tabulated. The major firm BAC One‐Eleven development project —that of safe autoflare—is described. This project is intended to result in the autoflare system being available for airline use in 1966. It is recognized that systems which do not go as far as safe autoflare may confer some benefit—although the benefits to be obtained are hard to predict quantitatively —and may be attractive to some operators. On the other hand a fully automatic failure survival system will almost certainly be required to meet the full Phase III requirement. The ability of the BAC One‐Eleven to accommodate this wide range of possible system requirements is described.

Abstract

Purpose

Seeks to present a methodology for working with bottle‐neck reduction by using a combination of automatic data collection and discrete‐event simulation (DES) for a manufacturing system.

Design/methodology/approach

In the DES model, the bottle‐neck was identified by studying the simulation runs based on the collected automatic data from the different machines in the manufacturing system.

Findings

A case study showed an improvement of the availability in one machine from 58.5 to 60.2 percent. This single alteration with a minimum of investment resulted in a 3 percent increase of the overall output in the manufacturing system consisting of 11 numerically controlled machines and six other stations. A new simulation run was performed one year after the first study in order to see how the improvement work has progressed with the suggested method. The method resulted in an increase of 6 percent in overall output.

Originality/value

It could be assumed that machines in future manufacturing systems will provide automatic data. The data can then be used for DES models when identifying bottle‐necks in a manufacturing system.

Abstract

Purpose

Since the market penetrations of service robots are only successful to a limited types of services, the purpose of the paper is to look into the reasons why the market penetrations are lagged from both technical and nontechnical perspectives. Automatic robotic recharging services, especially robotic refueling systems, are used as the case study for the investigation.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper surveyed the relevant technologies and products and conducted the feasibility study and risk management for new development of automated robotic refueling systems. This paper developed a cost model for the evaluation of robotic refueling systems.

Findings

There are no major technical barriers that exist for the development of robotic refueling systems, but two main risks of developing new robotic refueling systems are interference of existing patents and the extreme effort to further reduce the development cost of automated refueling systems. The recommendations have been made to new developers of service robots.

Research limitations/implications

The suggestions are made for further development on service robots, in general; however, this paper does not cover the physical development of service robots.

Practical implications

This study was actually conducted for a client company who has a strong interest in developing new products for automatic robotic refueling systems. The reported work has great significance for new comers in this area to understand the state of the art, technological challenges and some potential risks in the field.

Originality/value

To the best of authors’ knowledge, it will be the first academic paper to summarize the research and development effort on automatic recharging business. The targeted field is very typical in promoting robots in services. Even robotic refueling was proposed at very early stage of robotic application, the market penetration of refueling robots the market penetration is very limited, not because the technology readiness but some other factors. This work has its significance to identify technical and nontechnical challenges to promote robots in services.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to evaluate the generation of food waste in a university and the handling efficiency of an automatic waste collection system.

Design/methodology/approach

The quantity of food waste generated and collected from a university canteen was surveyed. The food waste handling efficiencies using manual collection strategy and automated food waste collection system were determined by the density of food waste. Life-cycle costing analysis was done to evaluate the economic impacts of various food waste collection methods.

Findings

As compared with the manual collection approach, the automatic system can improve the food waste handling efficiency by 30% (from 0.01 to 0.007 bin kg−1) and reduce the water use by 20% (from 0.512 to 0.406 L kg−1); however, it also consumes 4.4 times more energy (from 0.005 to 0.027 kWh kg−1). Under ideal system operation, the 10-year cost of food waste collection was significantly reduced from $3.45 kg−1 in the manual collection to $1.79 kg−1, and the payback period of the system collection was 1.9 years without discount.

Practical implications

The outcomes of this study show that an automatic food waste collection system is feasible, and it is recommended for small- and medium-sized catering facilities (e.g. canteens and food courts) to improve food waste handling efficiency. This study also provides useful reference data of automatic food waste collection systems for planning food waste management programs for catering facilities.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to evaluate the waste handling efficiency, operational expenditure and life-cycle cost of a small-scale automatic food waste collection system.

Abstract

MORE than 200 delegates and observers from sixteen countries attended the International Federation of Airline Pilots' Associations (I.F.A.L.P.A.) Symposium on all weather landing, at the Hilton Hotel in Amsterdam from October 17 to 19, 1962. The Symposium, which was opened by Prince Bernhardt of the Netherlands, heard presentations from a considerable proportion of the equipment manufacturers in the automatic landing field, covering the current state of their system development and testing. More than half of the symposium was allotted to discussion and many of the pilots present expressed their opinions. The dominant theme of the discussion, naturally enough, was the proper place of the pilot in the all weather landing operation. This aspect of the operation is probably now the most contentious in the whole field and views expressed at this meeting might have been expected to be of great value to equipment and aircraft manufacturers. In fact, although much of interest was said, it cannot be recorded that there was a large measure of agreement between the pilots present.
