Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to present a depth information-based solution for automatic camera control, depending on the presenter’s moving positions. Talks, presentations and lectures are often captured on video to give a broad audience the possibility to (re-)access the content. As presenters are often moving around during a talk, it is necessary to steer recording cameras.

Design/methodology/approach

We use depth information from Kinect to implement a prototypical application to automatically steer multiple cameras for recording a talk.

Findings

We present our experiences with the system during actual lectures at a university. We found out that Kinect is applicable for tracking a presenter during a talk robustly. Nevertheless, our prototypical solution reveals potential for improvements, which we discuss in our future work section.

Originality/value

Tracking a presenter is based on a skeleton model extracted from depth information instead of using two-dimensional (2D) motion- or brightness-based image processing techniques. The solution uses a scalable networking architecture based on publish/subscribe messaging for controlling multiple video cameras.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this work is to present a prototype of the system and the results from a technical evaluation and a study on possible effects of recordings with active camera control on the learner. An increasing number of higher education institutions have adopted the lecture recording technology in the past decade. Even though some solutions already show a very high degree of automation, active camera control can still only be realized with the use of human labor. Aiming to fill this gap, the LectureSight project is developing a free solution for active autonomous camera control for presentation recordings. The system uses a monocular overview camera to analyze the scene. Adopters can formulate camera control strategies in a simple scripting language to adjust the system’s behavior to the specific characteristics of a presentation site.

Design/methodology/approach

The system is based on a highly modularized architecture to make it easily extendible. The prototype has been tested in a seminar room and a large lecture hall. Furthermore, a study was conducted in which students from two universities prepared for a simulated exam with an ordinary lecture recording and a recording produced with the LectureSight technology.

Findings

The technical evaluation showed a good performance of the prototype but also revealed some technical constraints. The results of the psychological study give evidence that the learner might benefit from lecture videos in which the camera follows the presenter so that gestures and facial expression are easily perceptible.

Originality/value

The LectureSight project is the first open-source initiative to care about the topic of camera control for presentation recordings. This opens way for other projects building upon the LectureSight architecture. The simulated exam study gave evidence of a beneficial effect on students learning success and needs to be reproduced. Also, if the effect is proven to be consistent, the mechanism behind it is worth to be investigated further.

Abstract

Camera‐based colour measurement systems have application where it is difficult to apply a contact instrument, or where the contact instrument, because of its fixed lighting geometry, does not provide the necessary data. The paper describes the principles, procedures and precautions necessary for camera based colorimetry. Equations are presented to convert digitised R G and B values, which are system specific, into CIE X Y Z colour values, an international standard method of colour specification. It is reported that colours spaced equally in RGB values appear to have visual colour difference steps varying in size by as much as 30:1 through the different regions. The poorest colour resolution occurs for RGB values that represent dark or strongly coloured shades. At least ten bits per channel digitisation of RGB values is required to achieve a colour resolution similar to the human visual system for dark, intense shades.

NOT perhaps the most vintage of Farnboroughs from the point of view of new aircraft and new technology, but undoubtedly one of the most successful in relation to the business done. Some fifteen major orders worth over £32½ million were announced, bringing the total order book for the industry this year to more than £782 million already. This exceeds by a handsome margin the new business won by the industry in any nine‐month period in the past, and it is expected that by the end of the year orders worth well over £800 million will have been received. Highlights of the new British hardware on show were the Hawker Siddeley Nimrod and production Harriers on the military side; the B.A.C. One‐Eleven 500, the Handley Page Jetstream, the Garrett‐engined Short Skyvan, and the Beagle Pups showed the resurgence of the industry's civil interests. The number of foreign aircraft that appeared, sponsored in the main by Rolls‐Royce, bore witness to the strength of Britain's aero engine and aircraft equipment industry, and further evidence of this was found in the exhibition proper with many examples of major items of equipment having been adopted for overseas markets. The overall impression at Farnborough was a new‐found confidence in the future of the industry exemplified by a more aggressive and effective export sales policy that has already proved our ability to deliver the goods. It is not possible to cover all the exhibits shown at Farnborough, but the report following describes many of the interesting items.

Abstract

Purpose

To study the mathematical image coding approaches used in two types of biometric systems, and the physical nature of those biometrics.

Design/methodology/approach

Gives details of algorithms used to encode data from images in established and new automatic iris recognition systems. Then examines face recognition techniques based on geometry, texture and three‐dimensional data.

Findings

Most commercial iris recognition systems are based on the algorithms developed by one man, John Daugman. Whilst iris systems can be used to check a person's identity against a large database of enrolled people, face recognition systems are currently only capable of use in one‐to‐one recognition mode, or in identification mode against a very small database. The iris is very distinctive and stable over time, but the face is much more variable and therefore difficult to identify with accuracy.

Originality/value

Provides the general scientific reader with some insight into the specialised field of biometric recognition.

Abstract

Interactive storytelling can be based either on explicit plot representations or on the autonomous behaviour of artificial characters. In such a character‐based approach, the dynamic interaction between characters generates the actual plot from a generic storyline. Characters’ behaviours are implemented through real‐time search‐based planning techniques. However, the top‐down planning systems that control artificial actors need to be complemented with appropriate mechanisms dealing with emerging (“bottom‐up”) situations of narrative relevance. After discussing the determinants that account for the emergence of narrative situations, we introduce additional mechanisms for coping with these situations. These comprise situated reasoning and action repair: we also illustrate the concepts through detailed examples.

Purpose

This paper aims to describe the principles underlying the successful implementation of a lecture recording service in higher education.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper qualitatively reviews the practices and experiences of several years of automated lecture recording at a medium-sized university in Germany.

Findings

The paper concludes that there are several principles that should be followed to successfully implement lecture recordings in higher education.

Practical implications

The principles described in this paper can serve as recommendations for other universities that would like to establish or optimize their own lecture recording service.

Originality/value

The value of the paper lies mainly in the great amount of experience in successfully running a lecture recording service on which the principles and recommendations are based.

Abstract

Purpose

Adoption of latest technological advancements (e.g. lecture capture system) is a hallmark of market-driven private universities. Among many other distinguishing features, lecture capture system (LCS) is the one which is being offered to enhance the flexibility of learning environment for attracting executive business students. Majority of foreign universities are offering the facility of LCS to their students in offshore campuses established in Malaysia. Yet, very little is known about perception and behaviour of executive business students towards acceptance and use of this facility. Therefore, to bridge the identified gap in academic literature, this study is an effort to explore the causal relationship between existing constructs of extended unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT2), personal innovativeness (PI), intention and use behaviour (UB) towards LCS. Moreover, this study is aimed to extend the UTAUT2 by introducing a new variable, namely, PI in the domain of information technology (IT) (PIIT).

Design/methodology/approach

SmartPLS-3.2.6 was used for data analysis and all PLS-related calculations. For this purpose, a self-administered questionnaire was designed to collect data regarding acceptance and UB towards LCS. A sample size of 481 responses from executive business students, who were enrolled in offshore campuses of five selected foreign universities in Malaysia, was used for testing the proposed theoretical model.

Findings

The results of structural equation modelling (SEM) revealed that, performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions, price value, hedonic motivation, habit and PIIT have a significant and positive influence on acceptance and use of LCS among executive business students. Unique to this study is that, findings of this study have highlighted PIIT as an important factor that affects intention and UB towards LCS among executive business students.

Practical implications

By validating and extending the UTAUT2, the findings of this study provide a number of practical implications along with a comprehensive, robust and useful framework for universities to successfully implement technological advancements, such as LCS, to enhance overall learning outcomes.

Originality/value

By investigating the factors determining acceptance and use of LCS among executive business students, using a partial least square (PLS)-based SEM approach, this study makes a sizeable theoretical, methodological and contextual contribution to the overall body of knowledge.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is two‐fold. First, to deal with the problem of audio speaker localization and second, to deal with the problem of mobile camera control. The task of speaker localization consists of determining the position of the active speaker and the task of camera control consists of orienting a mobile camera towards that active speaker. These steps represent the main task of speaker tracking, which is the global purpose of the research work.

Design/methodology/approach

In this approach, two‐channel‐based estimation of the speaker position is achieved by comparing the signals received by two cardioids microphones, which are placed the one against the other and separated by a fixed distance. The localization technique presented in this paper is inspired from the human ears, which act as two different sound observation points, enabling humans to estimate the direction of the speaking person with a good precision. Concerning the camera control part, the authors have conceived an automatic system for generating the command signals and controlling the rotation of the mobile camera by a stepper motor.

Findings

The off‐line experiments of speaker tracking by camera have been done in a small meeting room without echo cancelation. Results show the good performances of the proposed localization methods and a correct tracking by camera.

Practical implications

This new technique can be used for the automatic supervision of smart rooms.

Originality/value

The work described in this paper is original, since it uses only two microphones for the speaker localization.
