In this chapter, I present the philosophical pillars of a Southern green criminology. I develop this work by asking ultimate questions. First, I argue that green criminology has yet to establish and develop the most important fundamental premises that every inquiry must have – ontological, epistemological and methodological premises. To fill that gap, I examine the philosophical beliefs that guide, sustain and legitimise environmental discrimination as well as its preventive practices. Building on that analysis, I present two major philosophies – atomistic and Gestalt – that are overarching worldviews that guide our interactions with nature. I establish a Gestalt philosophy as an inquiry paradigm that can serve as the basis of a Southern green criminology.

Many of the human communities that comprise the South have cosmologies that place human and nonhuman animals on a continuum. Culturism, with its foreign logic and dynamics, has broken this continuum, thereby fuelling speciesist practices. In this chapter, I portray the deep relation that some rural Southern communities have with nonhuman animals, and analyse some of the imposed logics that lead the South to abuse nonhuman animals while denying that what they are doing is mistreatment.

Land is a main component of the earth system and one of the ‘goods’ over which humans have waged many wars and conflicts throughout history. In this chapter, I present the empirical and discursive dynamics that lead to ecological discrimination regarding land. I focus on three means by which Southern land is legally grabbed: private armies, discourses and laws. Much land dispossession is illegal, but in this chapter I focus on the legal forms because they are equally harmful and most of the times invisible and thus more difficult to prevent.

It was suggested by Fidelman that Kantian ideas, namely, actual Infinity, the cosmos, a reason for the cosmos and consciousness, involve a cognitive conflict. This cognitive conflict is caused by a competition between the left‐ and right‐hemispheric cerebral mechanisms, and it causes us to feel that we encounter a paradox. It is suggested in this study that quantum particles too are Kantian ideas. According to Kant the logic of experience does not necessarily apply to Kantian ideas, which are not part of experience. Thus, Kant explained the paradoxes related to them. It is suggested that the cognitive paradoxes related to quantum particles are also related to a conflict between the hemispheric mechanisms.

Since the 1950s, the unifying epistemological perspective in American public administration has been logical positivism, most notably as defined and promoted by Herbert Simon. In recent years, logical positivism has been under attack for limiting inappropriately the scope of inquiry within the field, forcing it to ignore important, value‐laden issues critical to government and the public sector. The willingness to address value‐laden issues was at the core of what was to become the field of public administration in the early twentieth‐century. This article examines the philosophical roots of logical positivist movement, its dramatic effects upon public administration, and the subsequent counter attacks on the movement. The article concludes that although logical positivism’s attack on public administration initially weakened the field, as a result practitioners and scholars were eventually to demand increased rigor and higher standards of inquiry for research in the field.

A course of study on the philosophy of mathematics involved learning about Zeno's paradoxes and the solutions suggested for them by the ancient Greeks; the Eleatic and atomistic. The two schools were related to modern physics and the course students were asked which of the two approaches they preferred. They also participated in a test of the cerebral hemispheres. It was found that preference of the Eleatic solution over the atomistic is related to a dominance of the right hemisphere Over the left. The results are discussed in relation to the opposing views concerning Kant's theory of the a priori perception of physical phenomena.

Beginning in the late 1940s, classical Public Administration was challenged by the works of Herbert Simon and the movement he started, logical positivism. Although only writing in the field for a few years, Simon shifted the locus and focus of the field so dramatically, for a time it almost disappeared from view. This article examines Simonʼns legacy, first by exploring its philosophical antecedents and its later epistemological progeny. The article concludes with an assessment of how the field of Public Administration responded to Simonʼns challenge in the late twentieth century and now, early in the twenty first century.

Finite divisibility of general systems is shown. Based on this result, Lavoisier’s Axiom, introduced in 1789, is verified by using the concept of basic particles, where a basic particle is one particle which can no longer be divided into smaller ones. The conservation principle of ancient atomists is recasted and proved mathematically, based on which the law of conservation of matter‐energy can be seen clearly. A brief history of atoms, elements, and laws of conservation is given and some important open questions are posed.
