Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the local feature of driven granular gases in event-driven molecular dynamic simulation, in order to achieve spatial profiles of local velocity distribution and granular temperature, and the local state with various coefficients of restitution.

Design/methodology/approach

Event-driven molecular dynamic simulation is performed to study a vibro-fluidized granular gas system. Triangular-wave vibration is adopted in the simulation. The authors focus on the steady state of a driven granular gas.

Findings

The simulation finds the local velocity distribution is asymmetric along vibration direction in this driven granular gas system, which agrees with the experimental results obtained in micro-gravity. A nonlinear spatial profile of the skewness of local velocity distribution in vibration direction is found in the simulation. Furthermore, it is found that the value of skewness increases with the system dissipation. It is also found that the two temperature components T+ and T− differ from each other. This shows breakdown of energy equipartition. The ratio between them drops exponentially along y direction in various coefficients of restitution. All results confirm that the bulk boundary effect relates to the dissipation properties of granular gases.

Originality/value

This is the first MD simulation that investigates the bulk boundary effect to the local velocity distribution. The spatial profiles of the skewness of local velocity distribution are also investigated when changing the coefficient of restitution to study the influence of the system dissipative nature.

Abstract

An improved velocity‐space carrier transport model is presented, based on a direct solution of the Boltzmann Transport Equation. This model attempts to achieve the computational efficiency required for device simulation, while still solving for the distribution function itself. This preserves critical fine structure effects due a non‐ideal band structure and forward scattering mechanisms. The model includes a numerically efficient representation of three dimensional k‐space formulated around a 1D velocity‐space variable, and the particle energy. The number of empirical parameters in the model is reduced to a single constant per scattering mechanism. A physically intuitive solution algorithm is developed which repeatedly shifts and shapes the estimate of the distribution until convergence. Results are presented for the steady‐state homogeneous case in silicon and GaAs, which are of comparable computational cost as drift‐diffusion simulations.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate thermally and hydrodynamically fully developed convection in a duct of rectangular cross-section containing a porous medium and fluid layer.

Design/methodology/approach

The Darcy–Brinkman–Forchheimer flow model is adopted. A finite difference method of second-order accuracy with the Southwell-over-relaxation method is deployed to solve the non-dimensional momentum and energy conservation equations under physically robust boundary conditions.

Findings

It is found that the presence of porous structure and different immiscible fluids exert a significant impact on controlling the flow. Graphical results for the influence of the governing parameters i.e. Grashof number, Darcy number, porous media inertia parameter, Brinkman number and ratios of viscosities, thermal expansion and thermal conductivity parameters on the velocity and temperature fields are presented. The volumetric flow rate, skin friction and rate of heat transfer at the left and right walls of the duct are also provided in tabular form. The numerical solutions obtained are validated with the published study and excellent agreement is attained.

Originality/value

To the author’s best knowledge this study original in developing the numerical code using FORTRAN to assess the fluid properties for immiscible fluids. The study is relevant to geothermal energy systems, thermal insulation systems, resin flow modeling for liquid composite molding processes and hybrid solar collectors.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to focus on convective heat and mass transfer characteristics of Cu-water nanofluid inside a porous microchannel in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. The walls of the microchannel are subjected to constant asymmetric heat fluxes and also the first order catalytic reaction. To represent the non-equilibrium region near the surfaces, the Navier’s slip condition is considered at the surfaces because of the non-adherence of the fluid-solid interface and the microscopic roughness in microchannels.

Design/methodology/approach

Employing the Brinkman model for the flow in the porous medium and the “clear fluid compatible” model as a viscous dissipation model, the conservative partial differential equations have been transformed into a system of ordinary ones via the similarity variables. Closed form exact solutions are obtained analytically based on dimensionless parameters of velocity, temperature and species concentration.

Findings

Results show that the addition of Cu-nanoparticles to the fluid has a significant influence on decreasing concentration, temperature distribution at the both walls and velocity profile along the microchannel. In addition, total heat transfer in microchannel increases as nanoparticles add to the fluid. Slip parameter and Hartmann number have the decreasing effects on concentration and temperature distributions. Slip parameter leads to increase velocity profiles, while Hartmann number has an opposite trend in velocity profiles. These two parameters increase the total heat transfer rate significantly.

Originality/value

In the present study, a comprehensive analytical solution has been obtained for convective heat and mass transfer characteristics of Cu-water nanofluid inside a porous microchannel in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. Finally, the effects of several parameters such as Darcy number, nanoparticle volume fraction, slip parameter, Hartmann number, Brinkman number, asymmetric heat flux parameter, Soret and Damkohler numbers on total heat transfer rate and fluid flow profiles are studied in more detail. To the best of author’s knowledge, no study has been conducted to this subject and the results are original.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to numerically investigate the heat transfer performance of aviation kerosene flowing in smooth and enhanced tubes with asymmetric fins at supercritical pressures and to reveal the effects of several key parameters, such as mass flow rate, heat flux, pressure and inlet temperature on the heat transfer.

Design/methodology/approach

A CFD approach is taken and the strong variations of the thermo-physical properties as the critical point is passed are taken into account. The RNG k-ε model is applied for simulating turbulent flow conditions.

Findings

The numerical results reveal that the heat transfer coefficient increases with increasing mass flow rate and inlet temperature. The effect of heat flux on heat transfer is more complicated, while the effect of pressure on heat transfer is insignificant. The considered asymmetric fins have a small effect on the fluid temperature, but the wall temperature is reduced significantly by the asymmetric fins compared to that of the corresponding smooth tube. As a result, the asymmetric finned tube leads to a significant heat transfer enhancement (an increase in the heat transfer coefficient about 23-41 percent). The enhancement might be caused by the re-development of velocity and temperature boundary layers in the enhanced tubes. With the asymmetric fins, the pressure loss in the enhanced tubes is slightly larger than that in the smooth tube. A thermal performance factor is applied for combined evaluation of heat transfer enhancement and pressure loss.

Research limitations/implications

The asymmetric fins also caused an increased pressure loss. A thermal performance factor ? was used for combined evaluation of heat transfer enhancement and pressure loss. Results show that the two enhanced tubes perform better than the smooth tube. The enhanced tube 2 gave better overall heat transfer performance than the enhanced tube 1. It is suggested that the geometric parameters of the asymmetric fins should be optimized to further improve the thermal performance and also various structures need to be investigated.

Practical implications

The asymmetric fins increased the pressure loss. The evaluation of heat transfer enhancement and pressure loss Results showed that the two enhanced tubes perform better than the smooth tube. It is suggested that the geometric parameters of the asymmetric fins should be optimized to further improve the thermal performance and also various structures need to be investigated to make the results more engineering useful.

Originality/value

The paper presents unique solutions for thermal performance of a fluid at near critical state in smooth and enhanced tubes. The findings are of relevance for design and thermal optimization particularly in aerospace applications.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to find a solution of laminar liquid flow in asymmetric narrow channels. In many cases, an intuitive solution is much more useful and necessary for engineering applications, although numerical solutions can be obtained.

Design/methodology/approach

The Navier‐Stokes equations of laminar liquid flow in asymmetric narrow channels are simplified based on geometric characteristics of narrow channels, physical characteristics of liquid and boundary conditions. The simplified Navier‐Stokes equations are solved theoretically. Verification of the obtained results is carried out based on comparing with the Jeffery‐Hamel flow, which is an exact solution of liquid flow in convergent or divergent channels proposed by Jeffery.

Findings

This paper proposed an intuitive solution of laminar liquid flow in asymmetric narrow channels. Obtained results show that the solution can provide a fairly precise flowrate, when a ratio between the width of the channel and the curvature of the boundary of the asymmetry channel is smaller than 0.2936/Re. Furthermore, the obtained solution of pressure distribution along the channel shows high enough accuracy, even though the Reynolds number reaches to higher than 105.

Research limitations/implications

Because the authors assumed the width of the channel is far smaller than the curvature of the boundary of the asymmetric channel, the obtained results could only fit finite cases. Because the Navier‐Stocks equations were finally simplified into one‐dimensional, it is impossible to forecast separation flows; so the obtained results will fail when the Re number is too big. However, experiments should be carried out further to verify these problems.

Originality/value

This paper proposes an intuitive solution of laminar liquid flow in asymmetric narrow channels, including the pressure distribution along the channel.

Abstract

Purpose

The mixing of fuel and air plays a pivotal role in enhancing combustion in supersonic regime. Proper mixing stabilizes the flame and prevents blow-off. Blow-off is due to the shorter residence time of fuel and air in the combustor, as the flow is in supersonic regime. The flame is initiated in the local subsonic region created using a flameholder within the supersonic combustor. This study aims to design an effective flameholder which increases the residence time of fuel in the combustor allowing proper combustion preventing blow-off and other instabilities.

Design/methodology/approach

The geometry of the strut-based flameholder is altered in the present study to induce a streamwise motion of the fluid downstream of the strut. The streamwise motion of the fluid is initiated by the ramps and grooves of the strut geometry. The numerical simulations were carried out using ANSYS Fluent and are validated against the available experimental and numerical results of cold flow with hydrogen injection using plain strut as the flameholder. In the present study, numerical investigations are performed to analyse the effect on hydrogen injection in strut-based flameholders with ramps and converging grooves using Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equation coupled with Menter’s shear stress transport k-ω turbulence model. The analysis is done to determine the effect of geometrical parameters and flow parameter on the flow structures near the base of the strut where thorough mixing takes place. The geometrical parameters under consideration include the ramp length, groove convergence angle, depth of the groove, groove compression angle and the Mach number. Two different strut configurations, namely, symmetric and asymmetric struts were also studied.

Findings

Higher turbulence and complex flow structures are visible in asymmetric strut configuration which develops better mixing of hydrogen and air compared to symmetric strut configuration. The variation in the geometric parameters develop changes in the fluid motion downstream of the strut. The fluid passing through the converging grooves gets decelerated thereby reducing the Mach number by 20% near the base of the strut compared to the straight grooved strut. The shorter ramps are found to be more effective, as the pressure variation in lateral direction is carried along the strut walls downstream of the strut increasing the streamwise motion of the fluid. The decrease in the depth of the groove increases the recirculation zone downstream of the strut. Moreover, the increase in the groove compression angle also increases the turbulence near the base of the strut where the fuel is injected. Variation in the injection port location increases the mixing performance of the combustor by 25%. The turbulence of the fuel jet stream is considerably changed by the increase in the injection velocity. However, the change in the flow field properties within the flow domain is marginal. The increase in fuel mass flow rate brings about considerable change in the flow field inducing stronger shock structures.

Originality/value

The present study identifies the optimum geometry of the strut-based flameholder with ramps and converging grooves. The reaction flow modelling may be performed on the strut geometry incorporating the design features obtained in the present study.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to perform three-dimensional numerical computations for blood flow through a double stenosed carotid artery. Pulsatile flow with Womersley number (Wo) of 4.65 and Reynolds number (Re) of 425, based on the diameter of normal artery and average velocity of inlet pulse, was considered.

Design/methodology/approach

Finite volume method based ANSYS Fluent 20.1 was used for solving the governing equations of three-dimensional, laminar, incompressible and non-Newtonian blood flow. A high-quality grid with sufficient refinement was generated using ICEM CFD 20.1. The time-averaged flow field was captured to investigate the effect of severity and eccentricity on the lumen flow characteristics.

Findings

The results show that an increase in interspacing between blockages brings shear layer instability within the region between two blockages. The velocity profile and wall shear stress distribution are found to be majorly influenced by eccentricity. On the other hand, their peak magnitude is found to be primarily influenced by severity. Results have also demonstrated that the presence of eccentricity in stenosis would assist in flow development.

Originality/value

Variation in severity and interspacing was considered with a provision of eccentricity equal to 10% of diameter. Eccentricity refers to the offset between the centreline of stenosis and the centreline of normal artery. For the two blockages, severity values of 40% and 60% based on diameter reduction were permuted, giving rise to four combinations. For each combination, three values of interspacing in the multiples of normal artery diameter (D), viz. 4D, 6D and 8D were considered.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study numerically and experimentally incompressible Newtonian flow in a three‐dimensional cylindrical branching channel.

Design/methodology/approach

The flow configuration studied in the present investigation is such that a fully developed laminar flow enters an abruptly expanded cylinder and the flow leaves this cylinder by two identical cylindrical outlet branch pipes. A numerical analysis was performed by developing a three‐dimensional numerical code using the highly simplified marker and cell method. Representative velocities in the flow field are recorded by Laser Doppler Velocimeter measurements and volume flow rate from each outlet branch pipe is measured. Flow visualization in representative symmetrical planes is also carried out. Comparisons of numerical predictions and experimental data are presented and the reasonable agreement between the numerical and experimental results is encouraging.

Findings

The flow field in the three‐dimensional cylindrical branching channel is clarified within the range of laminar flow. The characteristics of the branch flow rate are obtained and show that there exist two distinct domains of strong asymmetric flow distribution from the outlet branch pipes, depending on the Reynolds numbers. It is further observed that the flow became time periodic as the Reynolds number is increased. It becomes apparent that the swirl flow component plays a key role in the flow phenomena.

Originality/value

The present investigation sheds light on the three‐dimensionality in the prevailing flow field for various inlet Reynolds numbers in the laminar flow range. Flow rate deflection characteristics in a three‐dimensional cylindrical branching channel are also obtained.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is numerical simulation of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) water–Al2O3 nanofluid mixed convection in a grooved channel with internal heat generation in solid cylinders. Simulations were carried out at Reynolds numbers 50 ≤ Re ≤ 100, Hartmann numbers 0 ≤ Ha ≤ 15, Grashof numbers 5,000 ≤ Gr ≤ 10−4 and volume fraction 0 ≤ φ ≤ 0.04. The effect of Reynolds number and the influence of magnetic field and pressure drop on convective heat transfer coefficient were studied in different volume fractions of nanoparticles at different Reynolds numbers.

Design/methodology/approach

The results show that average Nusselt number increases by increasing Reynolds and Hartman numbers. Also, when Hartman number increases, velocity profile becomes asymmetric. Pressure distribution shows that magnetic field applies Lorentz force at opposite direction of the flow, which causes asymmetric distribution of pressure. As a result, pressure in the upper half of the cylinder is higher than the lower half. Finally, velocity and temperature contours along the channel for different Hartmann numbers, volume fraction 3 per cent, Re = 50 and 100 and Gr = 10,000, are presented.

Findings

The effect of Reynolds number and the influence of magnetic field and pressure drop on convective heat transfer coefficient were studied in different volume fractions of nanoparticles at different Reynolds numbers.
