Abstract

Purpose

The study aims at creating a sequence of implementing supply chain enablers to achieve a greater efficiency in the combination by establishing relationship among them.

Design/methodology/approach

To build resilience capability in supply chain, enablers have been first identified through literature review and experts' opinion. The shortlisting of enablers is done in a brainstorming session having experts from academia and industry. The methodology Automated Layout Design Program (ALDEP), which is being used for creating facility layout, is applied to understand the relationship among the enablers for a resilient supply chain.

Findings

The methodology ALDEP is applied to explore relationship among five enablers shortlisted after discussion with experts. The layout matrix with the highest score between enablers is taken as a basis to establish relationship between two enablers that an organization can use to build a resilient supply chain.

Originality/value

The study uses a novel method helping organizations to build resilient supply chains. This study will not only provide a starting point but also provide an entire model for building a resilient supply chain.

Abstract

The performance of a supply chain is characterized by its ability to remain market‐sensitive without losing the integration through the chain. One of the difficulties in designing and analysing a supply chain is that its processes are governed by the strategic attributes of the supply chain. In order to evaluate the alternatives that provide the route of performance improvement in a supply chain, an analytic network process (ANP)‐based model is proposed. The ANP‐based evaluation model is illustrated through an example of supply chain. It provides an effective framework for analyzing the alternatives affecting supply chain performance. It also provides the decision methodology to prioritise these alternatives, so that supply chain performance can be improved.

Abstract

Purpose

The present study aims at developing a model to quantify supply chain resilience as a single numerical value. The numerical value is called resilience index that measures the resilience capability of the case company's supply chain. The model calculates the index value based on the interactions between the enablers of supply chain resilience and its dimensions.

Design/methodology/approach

Graph theoretic approach (GTA) is used to evaluate the resilience index for the case company's supply chain. In GTA, the dimensions of resilience enablers and their interdependencies are modelled through a digraph. The digraph depicting the influence of each dimension is converted into an adjacency matrix. The permanent function value of the adjacency matrix is called the resilience index (RI).

Findings

The proposed approach has been illustrated in context of an Indian automobile organization, and value of the RI is evaluated. The best case and the worst-case values are also obtained with the help of GTA. It is noted from the model that strategic level dimension of enablers is most important in contributing towards supply chain resilience. They are followed by tactical and operational level enablers. The GTA framework proposed will help supply chain practitioners to evaluate and benchmark the supply chain resilience of their respective organizations with the best in the industry.

Originality/value

A firm can compare the RI of its own supply chain with other's supply chain or with the best in the industry for benchmarking purpose. Benchmarking of resilience will help organizations in developing strategies to compete in dynamic market scenario.

Abstract

Purpose

The research paper presents analysis and prioritization of barriers influencing the improvement in the effectiveness of manufacturing system. The purpose of this paper is to develop an integrated fuzzy-based multi-criteria decision-making (F-MCDM) framework to assist management of the case company in the selection of most effective manufacturing system. The framework helps in prioritizing the manufacturing systems on the basis of their effectiveness affected by the barriers.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, on the basis of experts’ opinion, five barriers have been identified in a brain-storming session. The problem of prioritization of manufacturing system is a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem and hence is solved by using the F-MCDM approach using dominance matrix.

Findings

Manufacturing systems’ effectiveness for Indian industries is influenced by barriers. The prioritization of manufacturing systems depends on qualitative factor decision-making criteria. Among the manufacturing systems, leagile manufacturing system is given the highest priority followed by lean manufacturing system, agile manufacturing system, flexible manufacturing system and cellular manufacturing system.

Research limitations/implications

The selection of an appropriate manufacturing system plays a vital role for sustainable growth of the manufacturing company. In the present work, barriers which influence the effectiveness of manufacturing system have been identified. On the basis of degree of influence of barriers on the effectiveness of the manufacturing system, five alternative manufacturing systems are prioritized. The framework will help the management of the case company to take reasonable decision for the adoption of the appropriate manufacturing system.

Practical implications

The results of the research work are very useful for the manufacturing companies interested in analyzing the alternative manufacturing systems on the basis of their effectiveness and their sensitivity toward various barriers. The management of Indian manufacturing company will take decision to adopt a manufacturing system whose effectiveness is least sensitive toward barriers. Effectiveness of such manufacturing system will improve with time without having retardation due to barriers. With improved effectiveness of the manufacturing system, the manufacturing company would be able to survive with global competition. The result of the present work is based on the inputs from the case company and may vary for the other manufacturing company. In the present work, only five alternative manufacturing systems and five barriers have been considered. To obtain the better result, MCDM approach with more number of alternative manufacturing systems and barriers might be considered.

Originality/value

The research work is based on the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process framework and on the case study conducted by the authors. The work carried out is original in nature and based on the real-life case study.

Abstract

In this age of globalization, to survive, organizations need a good capacity to retain, develop, organize and utilize their knowledge assets. The knowledge of an organization comprises of professional intellect, such as know‐how, know‐why, and self‐motivated creativity; as also the experience, concepts, values, beliefs and ways of working that can be shared and communicated. Knowledge Management (KM) is described as the management of an organization’s knowledge through the processes of creating, sustaining, applying, sharing and renewing knowledge to enhance organizational performance and create value. Interpretive Structual Modeling (ISM) is a methodology for identifying and summarizing relationships among specific elements, which define an issue or problem. It provides a means by which order can be imposed on the complexity of such elements. In the present paper the important elements (also referred to as variables) for the implementation of KM in engineering industries have been analyzed to obtain an ISM, which shows the inter‐relationships of the variables and their levels. These variables have also been categorized depending on their driving power and dependence.

Abstract

Trust is a binding force in most buyer‐supplier transactions. It is critical when uncertainty and asymmetric product information are present in the transaction of a supply chain. One of the important characteristics in developing trust among trading partners of an e‐enabled supply chain is stage‐wise trust development among partners. In the present work, alternatives for trust development among buyer and supplier have been identified. In order to evaluate the alternatives to evolve trust in an e‐enabled supply chain, a framework involving analytic networked process is proposed. It helps in synthesizing various characteristics of trust in the e‐enabled supply chain. For the illustrative example, the result indicates superiority of a community responsibility system for building on‐line trust along the e‐enabled supply chain.
