Abstract

Today, VTLS is a comprehensive, integrated solution to the automation requirements of academic, public, and special libraries around the world. No two libraries are alike; no two regions are alike. VTLS recognizes these differences and offers libraries the flexibility of numerous options to configure the system that best meets their functional and financial needs.

Abstract

The Virginia Tech Library System is an integrated library system supporting cataloging, authority control, serials control, circulation, reserve room, acquisitions, document delivery, online public‐access catalog, keyword searching with Boolean operators, and statistics reporting. It runs on the Hewlett‐Packard HP/3000 line of computers. Initially installed in 1975, there are currently 104 users. Sidebars discuss: The Vanilla Network; LINNEA—the library information network for Finnish academic libraries; and the statewide information and referral service at Cabell County Public Library (West Virginia).

Abstract

The 18th ELAG (European Library Automation Group) meeting ‘Library services in an electronic environment’ was held in Budapest from 27 to 29 April 1994. ELAG was the guest of the prestigious Hungarian National Széchényi Library. One hundred and thirty European library automation specialists attended the seminar, among them about a quarter from Eastern Europe. The success was guaranteed by the programme, the continued enthusiasm of all members, and the smooth integration of the newcomers. Now, in its 15th year of existence, ELAG (European Library Automation Group) became European in the real sense of the word. Indeed nearly all European countries were represented. The ELAG members noted this achievement as a very important milestone.

Abstract

Gabriel is the World Wide Web server for those European national libraries represented in the Conference of European National Librarians (CENL), providing a single point of access on the Internet for the retrieval of information about their functions, services and collections. Above all, it serves as a gateway to their online services. The service has been developed through an international project involving the national libraries of the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Finland and Germany. Gabriel has the potential of becoming a model for collaboration in the networking field across a wide geographical area and among diverse institutions.

Abstract

The 17th ELAG (European Library Automation Group) Library Systems Seminar took place at Graz, Austria from 14 to 16 April 1993. The theme ‘The Virtual Library’ attracted 110 members from more than 20 European countries. Compared with last year 20 per cent more delegates attended, compared with two years ago the growth was 80 per cent. Most of the members, especially the newcomers, were pleased with the amount of information on practical experience and accurate knowledge exchanged during the meeting. The sudden expansion did not at all harm the enthusiasm and activity of the members. The novices quickly adapted to the particularities of ELAG's organisation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to expand the competence-led structuring and understanding of sustainability education by analysing the practices of professional individuals who have completed university education geared to the development of sustainability change-makers.

Design/methodology/approach

The research scope was initially on examining professional practices following the boundary work theory. Social practice theory was used as a methodological approach in conducting and analysing thematic interviews with 19 sustainability-focused master’s programme alumni. The interviews were analysed against the theoretical framework while also noting findings that fell outside of this framework.

Findings

A framework for understanding materials, competences and meanings of practices connected to the professional field of sustainability was introduced. The framework suggests that in the practices of sustainability-educated professionals, meanings emerge as a top priority and are conveyed using position-based materials and various complexes of competency.

Research limitations/implications

The authors suggest that boundary theory informs well the emergence of the professional field of sustainability, and the utilisation of a practice theory furthers the understanding of sustainability professionalism and its education.

Practical implications

The authors’ suggest that practice theory could thus provide deeper insights on how sustainability science alumni use their education after graduation, how they practice their profession and in return offer applicable reflections to sustainability education.

Originality/value

Research using practice theory in reflection on sustainability education and the professional practice of sustainability has not been widely conducted and in the authors’ opinion brings value to the education and practice of sustainability and to the research of sustainability education.
