Abstract

Purpose

The Covid crisis led to a huge worldwide shift in consumer behavior. In response, Walmart’s revised business strategy promoted their online delivery service known as Walmart Plus. This study aims to critique the potential of this new venture via a customer value analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

Using the customer value funnel, Walmart’s market environment, organizational factors, customer perceptions and business performance are examined. An exploratory survey collected data from South Florida residents on awareness and interest in Walmart Plus.

Findings

The changing marketplace forced Walmart to quickly adapt to online buyers and emphasize the value of their retail and grocery products. Walmart Plus is an alternative to Amazon Prime and can assist the company gain market share in regional grocery markets.

Research limitations/implications

This work is largely conceptual and presents a case study featuring a limited sample in one metropolitan statistical area. While the findings are insightful, it may not be representative of the US market.

Practical implications

Corporate executives and entrepreneurs must respond to changing market conditions and rethink their business models to deliver superior customer value. This requires introducing innovative services and digital initiatives to compete successfully. The paper concludes with recommendations for management and questions for consideration.

Originality/value

Walmart is the dominant American retailer and a global leader. While there has been considerable research on this retail giant, there has been limited analysis of their digital initiatives such as Walmart Plus.

Abstract

This article describes the evolution of an unusual model of management development for district council housing department managers in south east England. The paper takes stock of the experience; it attempts to draw together the disjointed strands of philosophy, principles, practice and results, and it seeks to contribute to the debate on how best to further manager/management development in British institutions.

Abstract

Purpose

On June 21, 2021, a motion was introduced to the Australian Senate calling on the federal government to reject critical race theory (CRT) from the national curriculum, claiming that CRT is divisive and racist. This was allegedly sparked by revisions to the national school curriculum, which included a more accurate reflection of the historical record of First Nations peoples’ experiences of colonisation and the framing of British arrival onto the continent as an invasion. This paper aims to overview the omnipresence of Western thought systems in the academy and critiques how knowledge production as a disciplinary practice positions race as a “marginalised knowledge”.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper is conceptual and it theorises the morphology and functions of racism within the Australian education system specifically, and across the board. This theorisation offers an invaluable starting point in rethinking how we advocate for and preserve Blac/k scholarship in academia. It examines how the political economy of racism in education offers a transformative position from which scholars can contribute to potential systemic change that promotes racial literacy and racial dignity, and the conditions necessary to foster these changes.

Findings

The paper confirms what studies by Blac/k scholars already highlight: that racialised knowledges are marked – as an aesthetic addition or as disruptive – or unnecessary – and how these patterns of colonial desires are manifested in the classroom or in race discourse.

Originality/value

Specifically, the arguments made in this paper examine two undertheorised concepts, namely, “racial dignity” and “trauma porn” to foreground the reimagination of practices that inform racial literacy in education. This offers a helpful starting place to consider how this form of education facilitates ongoing settler colonialism in Australia. The authors then propose an anti-racist pedagogical practice in social work education entailing three core crucial and transformative elements: self- reflexivity, storytelling and collaboration with Blac/k people.

Abstract

Although technology has always been, and will continue to be, the hallmark of human activity, it remains a poorly understood concept. There is little recognition that behind technology lies a technology, the accelerating application of which is making the presence of the technological revolution more and more visible. The most obvious manifestation of this is the increasing frequency in the redefinition of the way in which society lives and works. This article, while demonstrating humankind as technology creatures, provides an explanation of how society progresses or regresses by resolving or failing to resolve the paradoxes inherent in technology through uncovering both its mythology and economy.

Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyse how different policies and actors have structured the current migrant labour regime in the Finnish construction sector and to discuss the consequences for migrants. Our study shows that a strong industrial relations system such as in Finland is able to curb the posting of workers regime (the most disadvantageous for migrant workers). The position of labour migrants has become more diverse in the segmented labour market, although it remains inferior compared to that of the natives. Consideration of the policy development revolving around the changing migrant labour regimes constitutes the first part of the analysis and is based on government and trade union officials’ accounts. The more substantial part of the study draws upon biographical interviews with Estonian construction workers and analyses the division of migrant labour according to their employment in four ‘patterns of firm ownership’ that range from the most unfavourable to most favourable position: workers posted by Estonian firms; workers employed by firms registered in Finland but operated by Estonians; self-employed/small business owners and workers employed by Finnish firms. The structuring of the regime according to the pattern of firm ownership can be interpreted as a manifestation of employers’ intentional strategies to adapt to or avoid national regulations and to some extent as also reflecting workers’ individual and collective agency.
