Abstract
Purpose
Becoming self-employed has appeal to both genders. For many women, balancing work and family is a key motivator. However, businesses owned and operated by women are often very small, with limited turnover. This potentially can have disastrous consequences when these women come to retire, unless a solid retirement savings strategy has been considered. The purpose of this paper is to outline many of the issues and implications of a lack of research in this area.
Design/methodology/approach
Data were collected from 201 small business owners via a convenience sample derived from various databases. The survey was completed on-line and analysed using SPSS.
Findings
Many self-employed women in Australia have neither enough savings for their retirement, or an actual retirement plan. This is exacerbated by the lack of regulation requiring mandatory contributions into a superannuation (personal pension) fund by small business owners, unlike pay as you go employees, whose employers must contribute a certain about on their behalf.
Social implications
Middle-to-older aged women are the biggest cohort of homeless people in Australia. This is likely to grow as self-employed Baby Boomers stop working and find they do not have sufficient personal financial resources to fund their retirement.
Originality/value
Whereas there is much written about gender and small business ownership, as well as retirement and savings planning, these two areas have not been researched before in Australia. Yet it is an issue for the majority of small business owners, particularly women.

Abstract
Aims to provide a framework for identifying barriers to the implementation of a clinical guideline by examining a clinical effectiveness programme and a review of relevant literature. A total of 41 types of barrier were identified and categorised according to characteristics of the guideline to be introduced, the individuals who need to change behaviour and the organisation or environment in which the change is to occur. Several groups have the potential to overcome such barriers, ranging from individual clinicians to national policy makers. Multi‐level as well as multi‐faceted strategies may be required to overcome barriers to the effective implementation of clinical guidelines.

Abstract
Reports the findings and conclusions of a study of five small businesses in the hotel and catering sector which had adopted national vocational qualifications (NVQs). Using an open system model, a comparative case study design and a range of data sources and methods of data collection within each organization, traces the preconditions, processes, outcomes and problems/issues associated with NVQ adoption and implementation. In a small business context, this is shown more likely to be successful where there is an existing training culture and infrastructure; where on‐the‐job training is positive, supportive and monitored; and where there is a senior management NVQ “champion” and an enthusiastic cadre of in‐house trainers and potential assessors. Shows that NVQs give a sharper focus to training activity, improve candidates’ perceived job satisfaction, morale and career prospects; enhance work flexibility and performance; and have a perceived, if hard‐to‐measure payoff in terms of business performance.

Abstract
In this chapter, I examine stories that foster care youth tell to legislatures, courts, policymakers, and the public to influence policy decisions. The stories told by these children are analogized to victim truth testimony, analyzed as a therapeutic, procedural, and developmental process, and examined as a catalyst for systemic accountability and change. Youth stories take different forms and appear in different media: testimony in legislatures, courts, research surveys or studies; opinion editorials and interviews in newspapers or blog posts; digital stories on YouTube; and artistic expression. Lawyers often serve as conduits for youth storytelling, translating their clients’ stories to the public. Organized advocacy by youth also informs and animates policy development. One recent example fosters youth organizing to promote “normalcy” in child welfare practices in Florida, and in related federal legislation.

Abstract
While much of the existing research regarding moral exemplarity has focused on living individuals, examination of the lives of historical figures can also prove invaluable in understanding moral motivation. Consequently, this paper sought to apply Frimer and Walker’s (2009) reconciliation model and methodology in examining themes of agency and communion in the motivation of Miep Gies. Frimer and Walker’s (2009) Self-Understanding Interview and the VEiN coding method (Frimer, Walker, & Dunlop, 2009) served as guides for examining published and audio-recorded interviews, biographical and autobiographical information, as well as video-recorded speeches given by Gies. Aspects of an integrated moral identity appeared evident in the personality of Miep Gies as indicated in statements reflecting an overlap of both agency and communion. The study was limited in its reliance on publically available documents about or by Gies. Further, reliance on these documents, as opposed to a “live” interview, limited the ability of the author to identify responses to all questions included in Frimer and Walker’s (2009) interview or fully utilize the VEiN coding method (Frimer et al., 2009). Exploration of life narratives of historical figures can provide insight into an integrated moral identity as well as examples of developmental crossroads Frimer and Walker (2009) cited as essential in their reconciliation model. Comprehension of this reconciliation process is critical to understanding what lies at the heart of moral motivation and action as well as the ability to promote such growth in the lives of others.
