Abstract

Purpose

The shopper journey can cross a number of channels leading up to the point of a possible purchase, which may be unseen by the retailer or brand for the targeted purchase. The purpose of this paper is to gain a greater understanding of the decision making and purchase intention activity for online Millennial shoppers in deciding what fashion garments to buy in the digital retail environment. The paper also investigates the use of technology and social media involvement in the shopper journey leading up to the point of purchase.

Design/methodology/approach

In line with other studies that investigated online shopper behaviour (Balabanis and Reynolds, 2001; Pavlou et al., 2007), the authors have undertaken an exploratory investigation using an online survey conducted with respondents sourced through using Survey Monkey Audience. The survey was conducted with over 580 respondents (49.7 per cent female and 50.3 per cent male) between 16 and 34 years old living in England.

Findings

The findings highlight a picture of shoppers going on very different shopper journeys with different lengths, influenced by different touch points and using different media and devices. Each customer has their own individual experience and expectation. They can move through extremely diverse, long and complicated journeys in the buying process before they purchase a product. Most striking is their willingness to reach out and be influenced by other people beyond the control of any retailer – using platforms that are not necessarily specifically related with any retailer. Shoppers can undertake numerous activities before they make their final purchase decision, seeking content from different retailers, asking for social validation of their decision from their social networks both online and offline which is often out of sight of the retailer or brand.

Practical implications

The findings show how retailers and brands can understand the shopper decision journey and their behaviours across all the devices and channels that are used. Moreover, for some or part of the digital journey the shopper can often be unseen by the retailer or brand.

Originality/value

Consumers actively seek out novelty, knowledge and inspiration but shoppers employ a variety of interactions over a much greater period of time to arrive at the moment of purchase. This research provides an insight into the range of complex views and positions held by each individual to get a much more complete picture of where shoppers are looking to buy and what are their interests.

Abstract

In this article an audit of the service provided by our osteoporosis clinic at St. Mary's Hospital, Paddington, is described. The aim was to assess the quality of the service and to identify deficiencies that could be improved upon. It extended into primary care, and included an enquiry into patient satisfaction. From April to October 1995 154 patients (of whom 150 were female) were referred to the clinic. Of these 118 required a bone density measurement and 34% of patients had osteoporosis. The general practitioners (GPs) were satisfied with the waiting time for appointments and the standard of advice and treatment (>90%) but the standard set for communication was not achieved. The inadequate premises for the clinic did not deter the patients from documenting their satisfaction with the service provided. Subsequently, improvements have been made. We conclude that an osteoporosis clinic is an important part of the shared care approach to prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate how perceived organizational support (POS) moderates accountability's relationship with job satisfaction.

Design/methodology/approach

Self-report data were collected from one organizational sample from the USA and one organizational sample from Sweden.

Findings

The results support the hypothesis that POS moderates the relationship between accountability and job satisfaction in the two samples. Specifically, the findings show that accountability relates positively to satisfaction under high support conditions and, in one sample, negatively to satisfaction under low support condition.

Research limitations/implications

The current results suggest that social context is vital to a more informed evaluation of how accountability relates to work outcomes. Organizations should show their employees that they care about them. This can be achieved through starting, maintaining, and nurturing those initiatives that are interpreted positively by the employees.

Social implications

Scandals represent examples of accountability failures. The implications of these scandals are not merely limited to individual companies and their employees. The wellbeing of the employees is part of the wellbeing of the society.

Originality/value

This study offers new insights on the relationship between accountability and job satisfaction. First, it demonstrates how organizational support perception functions as a moderator of this relationship. Second, it reports replicable results from two organizational samples – one from North America and one from Europe.

Abstract

Investigates whether public libraries are capable of providing a basic science enquiry service. Examines the range of environmental enquiries handled by five participating libraries as a part of their everyday business. During the study some 110 detailed enquiries where recorded: somewhat less than 20 per cent of these concerned local environmental questions; the rest related to environmental queries at the national or global level. The three most popular topics were: pollution; names/addresses of environmental organizations and people; and recycling. Enquirers were evenly split between school attenders and adults. Most of the enquiries could be answered by making use of the resources already available in the library; no more than 10 per cent had to be referred elsewhere for an answer.

The first European conference on research into the management of information services and libraries (EURIM) was held at Unesco Headquarters, Paris, from 20–22 November 1973. It was conceived and organized by Aslib with the co‐sponsorship of the Association Nationale de la Recherche Technique, the Bibliothèque Royale de Belgique, the Consiglio Nazionale delle Richerche, the Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Dokumentation, NOBIN and NORD‐FORSK. The organization was an exercise in international co‐operation; the outstandingly high attendance—touching the 300 mark—could never have been achieved without the energetic publicity efforts of all the sponsors. Nor was this attendance confined to the sponsoring countries. Delegates were drawn from Algeria (2), Austria (3), Belgium (17), Czechoslovakia (1), Den‐mark (2), Finland (1), France (105), Germany (20), Ireland (1), Italy (6), Luxem‐bourg (3), Netherlands (37), Norway (4), Portugal (1), Roumania (2), Sweden (3), Switzerland (7), Tunisia (1), Turkey (2), United Kingdom (78), USA (2), Yugoslavia (1). The luxurious accommodation and impeccable arrangements at Unesco made an ideal setting for this event and artistic relief of the highest order was provided by the conducted visit, arranged by the Delegation General de la Recherche Scientifique et Technique with the generous co‐operation of the Directeur des Bibliothèques de France, the Directeur du Bureau National de Documentation and the Directeur des Musées de France, to the outstanding exhibition of paintings by Georges Braque at the Musée de l'Orangerie.

Abstract

Over several decades many ranking techniques have been proposed as aids to journal selection by libraries. We review those closely related to physics and others with novel features. There are three main methods of ranking: citation analysis, use or user judgement, and size or ‘productivity’. Citations offer an ‘unobtrusive’ quantitative measure, but not only is the absolute value of a citation in question, but also there is no consensus on a ‘correct’ way to choose the citing journals, nor of the ranking parameter. Citations can, however, point out anomalies and show the changing status of journals over the years. Use and user judgement also employ several alternative methods. These are in the main of limited applicability outside the specific user group in question. There is greater ‘parochialism’ in ‘use’ ranking than in ‘judged value’ lists, with citation lists the most international. In some cases, the attempted ‘quantification’ of subjective judgement will be misleading. Size and productivity rankings are normally concerned with one or other formulation of the Bradford distribution. Since the distribution is not universally valid, for library use the librarian must satisfy him/herself that the collection conforms to the distribution, or that his users would be well served by one that did. This may require considerable effort, and statistics gained will then render the Bradford distribution redundant.

The term ‘obsolescence’ occurs frequently in the literature of librarianship and information science. In numerous papers we are told how most published literature becomes obsolete within a measurable time, and that an item receives half the uses it will ever receive (‘half‐life’) in a few years. ‘Obsolescence’ is however very rarely defined, and its validity, interest, and practical value are often assumed rather than explained. Before reviewing studies on ‘obsolescence’, therefore, it is necessary to look at the concept and to identify the reasons why it should be of interest.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to explore how textual literacy and computational literacy can support each other and combine to create literacies with new critical possibilities. It describes the development of a Web application for interactive storytelling and analyzes how its use in a high-school classroom supported new rhetorical techniques and critical analysis of gender and race.

Design/methodology/approach

Three iterations of design-based research were used to develop a Web application for interactive storytelling, which combines writing with programming. A two-week study in a high-school sociology class was conducted to analyze how the Web application's textual and computational affordances support rhetorical strategies, which in turn support identity authorship and critical possibilities.

Findings

The results include a Web application for interactive storytelling and an analytical framework for analyzing how affordances of digital media can support literacy practices with unique critical possibilities. The final study showed how interactive stories can function as critical discourse models, simulations of social realities which support analysis of phenomena such as social positioning and the use of power.

Originality/value

Previous work has insufficiently spanned the fields of learning sciences and literacies, respectively emphasizing the mechanisms and the content of literacy practices. In focusing a design-based approach on critical awareness of identity, power and privilege, this research develops tools and theory for supporting critical computational literacies. This research envisions a literacy-based approach to K-12 computer science which could contribute to liberatory education.
