Abstract
Purpose
This paper considers ways forward in the study of trust in business relationships and networks.
Design/methodology/approach
The 25 papers focusing on trust previously published in the Journal of Business & Industrial Marketing are categorized as to their focus and compared to the body of work on trust concluding there is little considering the nature of trust. A model that integrates conceptualizations of the past and present and extends these to incorporate nature of trust as affective – including calculation and emotion – is presented.
Findings
This broadened conceptualization of trust contains focused, interacting components enabling both holistic and well as focused study of relationships and the role of trust within them.
Research limitations/implications
An important direction for business relationship and network research is consideration of the best way to conceptualize and measure trust. The way that trust components combine and vary in different settings, including in different cultures is also needed in future work. Operationalisations that are both more parsimonious and valid are likely.
Practical implications
Understanding as to value of measures of propensity to trust (which this model can guide) has potential value to managers as does an effective measure of generalized trust and understanding as whether this is a first step in relationship trial.
Originality/value
This is first detailed model of the nature of trust in business relationships that has been published in the marketing literature.

Abstract
Purpose
Worldwide, healthcare systems struggle to sustain the delivery of services at a time of increasing demand, limited resources and growing expectations from users, coupled with dealing with the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic and the threat of other outbreaks. There has never been a more important time to sustain innovation and improvements. Using an illustrative case, the authors assess the application of two existing frameworks to identify the key propositions and dimensions required to deliver sustainable services.
Design/methodology/approach
This illustrative case study focuses on a service provided by a chronic disease, multidisciplinary community healthcare team in the UK. Experienced-based interviews were conducted with health professionals, patients and relatives to provide a rich account of a care pathway design. A high-level process map is used to visualise the key touch points.
Findings
The authors identify all seven propositions of the SERVICE framework being present along with additional dimensions relating to sustaining innovation and improvement.
Research limitations/implications
This research is limited to a chronic disease care pathway. However, the authors believe the results could be applicable to other medical conditions, which are supported by a similar multi-disciplinary service delivery model.
Practical implications
The authors provide a sustainable public service operations SERVICES framework for health professionals and managers to consider when (re)designing care pathways.
Originality/value
This research contributes to the emerging discipline of public service operations research by empirically testing for the first time the SERVICE framework within healthcare. The authors have included additional factors associated with innovation and improvement and recommended further development of the framework to include factors, such as economic sustainability, highly relevant to the context of universal healthcare systems.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore the theme of centre and periphery in education through a study of the views and actions of the Reverend Samuel Marsden, New South Wales colonial chaplain, in relation to the education of Aboriginal people and Māori.
Design/methodology/approach
Taking a broad view of education, the author explores the contrasting models of education applied to Māori and Aboriginal youths, which exposed indigenous peoples to aspects of European life and emphasised a particular place in a developing racial hierarchy in the region.
Findings
The paper argues that Marsden was key to a process whereby Māori were brought into British imperial activity while Aboriginal people were relegated to the periphery of colonial interests in indigenous peoples.
Originality/value
By considering these educational “experiments” applied to indigenous peoples in the region together, this paper explores the role of imperial and colonial contexts, and developing discourses of race, on indigenous education.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to analyze the adjustment experience of Chinese expatriate managers in Portugal.
Design/methodology/approach
This exploratory study is based on the qualitative analysis of 12 semi-structured, open-ended interviews to Chinese expatriate managers in Portugal. Expatriates varied in terms of international experience, stage of career and industry. All expatriates had at least one-year working experience in Portugal. The coding process followed a reflexive approach between data and existing theory.
Findings
The process of adjustment of Chinese expatriate managers to the Portuguese context is arranged in five dimensions: perception: expatriates tend to perceive the differences between China and Portugal as not significant; guanxi replication: similarities between the two countries raised the question of whether the guanxi model could be replicated; resistance: although the two countries are perceived as close, there are significant differences, namely, in terms of some cultural aspects, the legal framework and the level of acceptance of the guanxi; adaptation: given these resistances, it is necessary for expatriates to change some practices that are commonly used in the Chinese context; and identity construction: Chinese expatriates are particularly concerned by their identity as foreigners and of the corresponding need to adjust.
Originality/value
This exploratory study revealed that guanxi should not be seen as a purely cultural product grounded in the Confucian tradition but instead should be taken as a business strategy that depends on the existence of specific factors, such as the relevance and quality of interpersonal relationships in a business context.
