Abstract

The “Libraries in Rhode Island” menu of the Ocean State Free‐Net (OSFN; see figure 1) presents the overarching multilibrary network in the state of Rhode Island (see figure 2). The Rhode Island Depart‐ment of State Library Services initiated the OSFN to provide online public access to libraries statewide. The menu represents access to the catalogs of 51 of Rhode Island's 62 public and academic libraries.

Abstract

CIM (Computer Integrated Manufacturing) is usually viewed as a vast and complex undertaking which only the General Motors of this world can afford. This article puts forward a simple CIM strategy based on a building block approach using UNIX (the industry standard hardware independent computer operating system). This approach ensures companies start with systems they can afford and also manage. Risks are decreased, small companies too can now build their own CIM strategies. UNIX's great strength is portability and flexibility: companies can start with basic MRP systems and build upon those, integrating at will the more specific elements of CIM as they are needed. The suitability of UNIX for this “mix and match” approach is examined. No longer is there any need to be locked in to one hardware or software supplier. Competitive edge too is improved as the manufacturer can respond quickly to the fluctuating nature of the consumer market. As new products are required, new computer control systems can easily be integrated with the core system.

Abstract

Analyses some of the reasons for fatigue and stress among drivers. Contributors to fatigue can be the distance travelled, or sleeping disorders. Contributors to driver stress can include worry and emotional stress, related to work or to life events; or road rage. Identifies ways in which stress, fatigue and road rage can be reduced or avoided. Provides advice for fleet managers on making driving safer.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to assess the value of the media rankings of business schools from the perspective of students, business schools and the media.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper analyses the rankings given to various schools by various publications.

Findings

The media rankings give the perception that there are more significant differences between similar MBA programs than actually exist. Indeed, many times it is the arbitrary weighting assigned by the media to the variables in the ranking rather than the quality of the school that accounts for differences across similar programs. A more accurate description of quality would be obtained by rating schools in groups of programs of similar quality.

Originality/value

Business school applicants can utilize media rankings to identify the top 100 MBA programs but should not base their decision between different programs on a specific ranking of one school relative to another. Rather, the applicant should examine the raw data behind the ranking, along with many other non‐quantitative factors, in assessing which is the program best matches their particular interests and aspirations.

Abstract

When the brilliant and solitary author of “The house with the green shutters” died young, not a little tidying‐up remained to be done. That, in the absence of a public library in rural Ayrshire, is what the librarian of Ayr Burgh set out to do.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the beginning of the journalistic career of the youngest members of Página/12 and Tiempo Argentino newspapers from Buenos Aires, Argentina. The ethnographic research took place in the newsrooms between 2011 and 2015 to study the socialization process of young reporters and interns in media press. With this goal in mind, it explores how they learn the values and practical rules of the journalistic world, starting with the interactions they engage on with other members of that environment, such as their colleagues and editors, as well as how they deal with the sources. The research was structured in five dimensions of analysis that contributed to explain the socialization process: (1) The channels and strategies to enter the journalistic field, (2) the newcomers' rites de passage, (3) the forms of socialization within the newsrooms, (4) the identification processes, and (5) the strategies that these young people implement in the medium term to stay in the journalistic world.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to look at the recent growth of the Internet, and how it has greatly increased the amount of information that is accessible and the number of resources that are available to users. To exploit this growth, it must be possible for users to find the information and resources they need. Existing techniques for organizing systems have evolved from those used on centralized systems, but these techniques are inadequate for organizing information on a global scale.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper describes Prospero, a distributed file system based on the Virtual System Model. Prospero provides tools to help users organize Internet resources.

Findings

These tools allow users to construct customized views of available resources, while taking advantage of the structure imposed by others.

Originality/value

Prospero provides a framework that can tie together various indexing services, producing the fabric on which resource discovery techniques can be applied.

Abstract

Purpose

The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has significantly increased in the past decade and nowadays is being used for various purposes such as image processing, cargo transport, archaeology, agriculture, manufacturing, health care, surveillance and inspections. For this reason, using the appropriate image processing method for the intended use of UAVs increases the study’s success. This study aims to determine the most suitable one among the innovative methods that constitute the image processing system for a UAV to be used for surveillance purposes.

Design/methodology/approach

Analytical hierarchy process has been used in the solution of the decision problem to be handled in three stages, namely, platform, architecture and method. The most suitable alternative and the effect weights of these criteria results were determined at each stage.

Findings

As a result of this study, Jetson TX2 was determined as the most suitable embedded platform, ResNet is the optimum architecture and Faster R-convolutional neural networks was the best method in the image processing layer for a system that will provide surveillance with image processing method using UAV.

Practical implications

In UAV designs, where multiple hardware and software choices and system combinations exist, multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approaches can be used as a system decision mechanism.

Originality/value

The novelty of this work comes from the application of MCDM methods that are used as a multi-layered decision mechanism in UAV design.

Abstract

Purpose

To provide an overview of how open access (OA) repositories have grown to take a premier place in the e‐research knowledge cycle and offer Southampton's route from project to sustainable institutional repository.

Design/methodology/approach

The evolution of institutional repositories and OA is outlined raising questions of multiplicity of repository choice for the researcher. A case study of the University of Southampton research repository (e‐Prints Soton) route to sustainability is explored with a description of a new project that will contribute to e‐research by linking text and data.

Findings

A model for IR sustainability.

Originality/value

The TARDis project was one of the first IRs to achieve central university funding in the UK. Combined with increased visibility and citation, the research assessment exercise route has become the “hook” on which a number of IRs are basing their business models.

Abstract

Purpose

Computed tomography (CT) scan can provide valuable information in the diagnosis of lung diseases. To detect the location of the cancerous lung nodules, this work uses novel deep learning methods. The majority of the early investigations used CT, magnetic resonance and mammography imaging. Using appropriate procedures, the professional doctor in this sector analyses these images to discover and diagnose the various degrees of lung cancer. All of the methods used to discover and detect cancer illnesses are time-consuming, expensive and stressful for the patients. To address all of these issues, appropriate deep learning approaches for analyzing these medical images, which included CT scan images, were utilized.

Design/methodology/approach

Radiologists currently employ chest CT scans to detect lung cancer at an early stage. In certain situations, radiologists' perception plays a critical role in identifying lung melanoma which is incorrectly detected. Deep learning is a new, capable and influential approach for predicting medical images. In this paper, the authors employed deep transfer learning algorithms for intelligent classification of lung nodules. Convolutional neural networks (VGG16, VGG19, MobileNet and DenseNet169) are used to constrain the input and output layers of a chest CT scan image dataset.

Findings

The collection includes normal chest CT scan pictures as well as images from two kinds of lung cancer, squamous and adenocarcinoma impacted chest CT scan images. According to the confusion matrix results, the VGG16 transfer learning technique has the highest accuracy in lung cancer classification with 91.28% accuracy, followed by VGG19 with 89.39%, MobileNet with 85.60% and DenseNet169 with 83.71% accuracy, which is analyzed using Google Collaborator.

Originality/value

The proposed approach using VGG16 maximizes the classification accuracy when compared to VGG19, MobileNet and DenseNet169. The results are validated by computing the confusion matrix for each network type.
