Abstract

Plus ca change: plus c'est la même chose “The more things change, the more they stay the same”. When playwright Jean Baptiste Alfonse Karr wrote those words in 1849 he could have been talking about automatic assembly, a technology that emerged upon an unsuspecting world more than a century later. The basic need for this type of automation has hardly changed for the last 40 years, but the attitudes of industry towards it certainly have. In the early 1950s it was optional; important mainly because it was new and a sure sign of a company keeping abreast of the times. But now it is more than that.
