Abstract

Purpose

Anchorage with concrete bearing pad is commonly used in Iran for stabilization of excavations because of the ease of construction, less costs and less time consumption than the soldier pile method. In this method, a wall facing which includes the concrete bearing pads at the location of the anchors and a shotcrete layer between the bearing pads is constructed parallel to the excavation operation similar to the nailing method.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, using the finite element software Abaqus, a three-dimensional model of the above-mentioned type of wall is constructed, and the effect of spacing and size of bearing pads on the wall behavior is discussed.

Findings

According to the obtained results, the size of the concrete bearing pads has little effect on wall deformations, but the internal forces and bending moments developed in the shotcrete layer between the bearing pads are greatly influenced by the bearing pads dimensions and spacing.

Originality/value

Owing to the discrete elements of the wall facing, the behavior of this system is completely three-dimensional.

Abstract

Purpose

The purposes of this paper are to propose a different profitability metric (i.e. anchor category profits) at the category level based on the concept of anchor categories and to illustrate how such a metric can be calculated in field settings to offer a balanced view of profit structure from both the accounting and marketing perspectives.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the concept of anchor categories is developed drawing on anchor effects theory and automatic cognitive processing theory. Based on anchor categories, this paper proposes a formula for calculating anchor category profits. Using the data collected with a survey instrument, this paper calculates accounting profits and anchor category profits for two grocery stores.

Findings

The intra-store analysis of accounting profits and anchor category profits reveals that the two profit measures project different profit contribution patterns by product categories for each store. The inter-store analysis provides quite different, yet useful information about profit structures for the two grocery stores. Although the two stores are similar in terms of accounting profits, their anchor category profits show different pictures regarding profit contribution patters by product categories between the two stores, revealing that different categories attract customers to different stores.

Practical/implications

Comparing accounting profits and anchor category profits allows retail managers to identify traffic generator categories and cash generator categories, which helps retail managers develop more effective category management to increase storewide profits.

Originality value

This paper increases understanding of the relationship between product categories and store choice behavior by offering a theoretical rationale to explain why some product categories influence consumers’ store choice. This paper also proposes anchor category profits as a more implementation-friendly category-level profitability metric that combines accounting principles with consumers’ shopping trip planning behavior.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to fill a gap in the real estate academic literature by defining the essence of real estate in smart urban environments. Space has traditionally been a silent component of real estate. Smart technologies powered by Ubi-comp are turning space into an active part of real estate, which represents a paradigm shift for commercial real estate. This shift requires new concepts and tools to analyse and model real estate in smart cities.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper defines the notions of smart space and smart real estate. Several concepts and tools are formulated, starting with a model of space users in smart cities, called the Cyber-Dasein inspired by Heidegger’s existential phenomenology of space.

Findings

The paper then analyses smart space’s attributes and proposes several metrics for commercial real estate in smart environments. After introducing three regression models for constructing a price index of smart real estate, the paper concludes by advocating that commercial real estate take an active role in the current debate about smart cities.

Research limitations/implications

The paper does not provide any empirical analysis of smart real estate.

Practical implications

Smart environments offer real estate a unique opportunity to set up methodologies, concepts and tools for new properties in new cities. Now is the time to think carefully about the impact smart technologies will have on commercial properties before other stakeholders (in particular smart cities vendors and multinational technology giants) have fully modelled smart space and its nexus with smart real estate.

Originality/value

This paper is the first paper to provide a conceptual framework for the analysis of commercial real estate in smart cities.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to present a diagram for the lateral earth pressure of c–φ soils exerted on anchored walls in presence of surcharge.

Design/methodology/approach

To this end, two-dimensional plane strain modeling of anchored wall was carried out in Plaxis software. To validate the numerical model, two excavations with different specifications were simulated and the model results were compared with the available results. Subsequently, a parametric analysis was done and based on its results, a diagram was proposed for the lateral earth pressure of c–φ soils including the surcharge effects.

Findings

The proposed diagram without the surcharge and cohesion effects is a trapezoidal with zero value at the ground surface that is linearly approaching the apparent earth pressure of sand according to Terzaghi and Peck (1967) at 0.1H (H: wall height). The surcharge and cohesion effects at the ground level is 4 Ka*q and 0, respectively, and below 0.1H, they are treated as the same way for lateral earth pressure of a retaining wall. It should be emphasized that the apparent pressure diagram for design does not resemble the real distribution of earth pressure against the wall and it is for calculating the values of the anchors loads.

Originality/value

The available diagrams to determine the earth pressure exerted on the anchored walls are related to sandy or clayey soils and do not take the presence of surcharge into account. Thus, the proposed diagram is quite original and different from the previous ones.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate changes in the commercial real estate market dynamics as a function of and conditional to the shifts in market state-space environment that can influence agent responses.

Design/methodology/approach

The analytical design uses a comparative computational experiment to address the performance of property assets in the current market based on comparison with prior structural patterns. The latent variables developed across market sectors are used to test agent behavior contingent on the perspectives of capital asset pricing conditionals (CAPM) and a behavioral momentum/herd construct. The state-space momentum analysis can assist the comparative analysis of current levels and shifts in property asset performance given the issues that have arisen with the financial crisis of 2007-2009.

Findings

An analytic approach is employed framed by a situation-dependent model. This frame considers risk profiles characterizing the perspectives and preferences guiding a delineated market state. This perspective is concerned with the possibility of shifts in market momentum and representativeness conditioning investor expectations. It is observed that the current market (post-crisis) has changed significantly from the prior operations (despite the diversity observed in prior market states). The dynamics of initial findings required an additional test anchored to the performance of the general capital market and the real economy across time. This context supports the use of a modified CAPM model allowing the consideration of opportunity cost in a space-time dynamic anchored with the consideration of equity, debt, riskless asset and liquidity options as they varied for the representative agents operating per market state.

Research limitations/implications

This paper integrates neoclassical and behavioral economic constructs. Combines asset pricing with prospect theory and allows the calculation of endogenous time-preferences, risk attitudes and formulation and testing of hyperbolic discounting functions.

Practical implications

The research shows that market structure and agent behavior since the financial crisis has changed from the investment and valuation perspectives operating as observed and measured from 1970 up to 2007. In contradiction to the long-term findings of Reinhart and Rogoff (2008), but in compliance with common perspectives and decision heuristics often employed by investors, this time things have changed! Discounting and expected rates of return are dynamic and are hyperbolic and not constant. Returns and investment for property assets are situational (market state-space specific) and offer a distinct asset class, not appropriately estimated by many of the traditional financial models.

Social implications

Assist in supporting insights to measure in errors and equations that result in inefficient resource allocation and beta discounting that supports the financial crisis created by assets subject to long-term decision needs (delta function).

Originality/value

The paper offers a combination and comparison of neoclassic asset pricing using a modified CAPM (two-pass) approach within the structural frame of Kahneman and Tversky’s (1979) prospect theory. This technique allows the consideration of the effects of present bias, beta-delta functions and the operation of the Allais Paradox in market states that are characterized by gains and losses and thus risk aversion and risk seeking behavior. This ability for differentiation allows for the development of endogenous time-preferences and hyperbolic discounting factors characteristic of commercial property investment.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe cost effective structural design procedures to support catalytic reactors used in hydrocarbon industry. Three case studies are presented using various reactor models. Modularization and transportation challenges are also discussed. The scope of the paper is limited only to the structural and construction aspects. The chemical and mechanical designs are not covered in this paper.

Design/methodology/approach

Finite element strategies are developed to model load transfer to reactor’s supports and to simulate soil/structure interaction. Fictitious nodes are generated at bolt locations to transfer the reactor’s loadings from the skirt to the pile cap. Soil-pile interaction is modeled using horizontal and vertical springs along the pile embedded length. Flexible supports are used at the bottom of the piles to stimulate the end bearing of the soil bed. The approach is demonstrated for several case studies of reactors support system.

Findings

The described algorithm is accurate and computationally efficient. Furthermore, the procedure can be used in practice for design catalytic reactor support.

Practical implications

The paper provides very useful guidelines that can be utilized in practice for design of catalytic reactor supports system. The procedure is cost effective and computationally efficient.

Originality/value

Extensive efforts were made in the past to develop economical procedures for catalytic reactors design. Much of the work focused on the process and mechanical aspects of catalytic reactors. Very limited work addressed the structural design aspects. Furthermore, no guidelines are available in current codes of practice.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper was to provide a plausible answer to how there are so few science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)-professional women managers in the Canadian space industry.

Design/methodology/approach

The author showcased one such individual and her experiences of the exclusionary order in this industry, by focusing on her discourses and those of her former supervisor. The author applied the critical sensemaking (CSM) framework to unstructured interview data and to various collected written documentation. To guide the author’s application of this CSM framework, the author asked and answered the following questions: what is the range of identity anchor points associated with, and available to, a STEM-professional woman within the Canadian space industry? What is the relationship between these anchor points and organizational rules and social values? And, how do these anchor points and their relationship with rules and social values influence the exclusion of STEM-professional women from management positions within this industry?

Findings

The author surfaced a STEM-professional woman’s range of ephemeral identities, captured within her range of attributed anchor points. The author also revealed some of the rules and social values of the organizational context she worked in. The author then analyzed the how of her exclusionary social order, by studying the relationship between these anchor points and these rules and social values.

Social implications

In addition to addressing the lack of STEM-professional women in management and to filling a gap in the literature, this study made a contribution to our understanding of social-identities, represented by anchor points, and to their discursive reproduction within organizational contexts. The author also suggested micro-political resistances to undo this social order for one particular individual.

Originality/value

This study’s value can be measured by its contribution to the postpositivist cisgender and diversity literature focused on intersectionality scholarship, specifically in the area of identity anchor points and their (re)creation within social interactions.

Abstract

In this study, tests were conducted to investigate the effect of different concretes on the behaviour of reinforced concrete beams with central splices. Five beam specimens were prepared using different concrete mixes in their splice regions. Experimental results indicated that the bond failure of the spliced rebars governed the ultimate flexural behaviour of all specimens, except the one cast with steel fibres. A small increase in flexural strength was found for both the spliced beams cast with high‐strength concrete and steel fibres. Moreover, use of high‐strength concrete and steel fibrous concrete led to a remarkable improvement in the beam's displacement capacity. The effect of pulverised fuel ash on the splice performance was insignificant while the introduction of silica fume caused improvements in loading capacity and ductility.
