Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to evaluate the effect of precursors on the anticorrosion property of silica encapsulated waterborne aluminium pigments (WBAPs).

Design/methodology/approach

The silica encapsulated WBAPs were prepared using different siloxanes as precursors. The anchorage and compactness of silica films on aluminium flakes were characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and N2 adsorption-desorption. The anticorrosion property and glossiness of WBAPs were evaluated.

Findings

The effect of precursors on anticorrosion property of silica encapsulated WBAPs is reflected from the anchorage and the compactness of silica on aluminium flakes surface. Furthermore, the structure of γ-aminopropyl triethoxysilane benefits the anchorage and the compatibility between pigment and acrylic resin. Neither high nor low ratio of tetraethoxysilane/γ-aminopropyl triethoxysilane is favourable to the anchorage and formation of dense silica film on the aluminium flakes surface. To obtain perfect WBAP, the precursors of silica must be carefully selected.

Research limitations/implications

Only four kinds of precursors were used in this work; other precursors could also be studied.

Practical implications

The investigation results provide theoretical basis to obtain excellent WBAPs.

Originality/value

The method to investigate anticorrosion property of WBAPs that is based on the effect of precursors on the performance of silica was novel.

Abstract

Purpose

Anchorage with concrete bearing pad is commonly used in Iran for stabilization of excavations because of the ease of construction, less costs and less time consumption than the soldier pile method. In this method, a wall facing which includes the concrete bearing pads at the location of the anchors and a shotcrete layer between the bearing pads is constructed parallel to the excavation operation similar to the nailing method.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, using the finite element software Abaqus, a three-dimensional model of the above-mentioned type of wall is constructed, and the effect of spacing and size of bearing pads on the wall behavior is discussed.

Findings

According to the obtained results, the size of the concrete bearing pads has little effect on wall deformations, but the internal forces and bending moments developed in the shotcrete layer between the bearing pads are greatly influenced by the bearing pads dimensions and spacing.

Originality/value

Owing to the discrete elements of the wall facing, the behavior of this system is completely three-dimensional.

Abstract

An aircraft comprises a jet propulsion plant having a jet pipe terminating in a jet nozzle for the rearward discharge of a propulsive jet stream; anchorages on the aircraft; a jet deflector comprising a canopy made of flexible metal cloth and flexible cords made of metal strands attached at their ends to the canopy and to the anchorages, and a canopy‐receiving housing on the aircraft. The canopy is foldable and unfoldable so as to be capable of being packed and stowed in the housing and of being opened up to form a chute. An axial cross‐section taken normal to a plane containing the axis of the jet stream is defined by two symmetrical arcuate portions meeting at one end on the plane at an apex and curving away from the plane one on each side thereof to edges at their other ends. Cords are attached to the apex and to the edges of the chute and are such in relation to the position of the anchorages that when the canopy is in the housing they extend from the housing to the anchorages and when the canopy is opened up they position it with the apex pointing towards and aligned with the nozzle on the plane and the concave sides of the arcuate portions facing the jet stream and the edges spaced apart by a distance greater than the transverse dimension of the jet stream measured normal to the plane.

Purpose

Prefabricated pier technology has the advantages of quick construction time, relatively little traffic interference and relatively small environmental impact. However, its applicability under earthquake conditions is not yet fully understood. The seismic performance and influence parameters of a prefabricated concrete pier connected by embedded grouting sleeve (GS) in a pile cap are investigated in this study.

Design/methodology/approach

Two prefabricated pier scale model specimens with different reinforcement anchorage lengths and two comparative cast-in-place (CIP) pier model specimens are designed and manufactured for a seismic simulation shaking table. With the continuous increase of input ground motion strength, the changes in basic dynamic characteristics, damage development, acceleration and displacement variation laws, and pier bottom strain responses are compared among the specimen. The finite element software ABAQUS is used to simulate the test pier.

Findings

The crack location of the two prefabricated pier specimens is almost the same as that of the CIP pier specimens; CIP pier specimens show more penetrated cracks than prefabricated pier specimens, as well as an earlier crack penetration time. The acceleration, displacement and strain response of the CIP pier specimens are more affected by earthquake activity than those of the prefabricated pier specimens. The acceleration, displacement and strain responses of the two prefabricated piers are nearly identical. The finite element results are in close agreement with the acceleration and displacement response data collected from the test, which verifies the feasibility of the finite element model established in ABAQUS.

Originality/value

A GS connection method is adopted for the prefabricated pier, and on the premise of meeting the minimum reinforcement anchorage length required by the code, this study explores the influences of different reinforcement anchorage lengths on the seismic performance of prefabricated piers in high-intensity areas. A shaking table loading test is used to simulate the real changes of the structure under the earthquake. This work may provide a valuable reference for the design and seismic performance analysis of prefabricated pier, particularly in terms of seismic stability.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to focus on tracheal stent production with the aim of investigating the available devices and improving their performances. The biomedical field is a continuously growing area of the market always in search of the most innovative and competitive solutions for healthcare. Beside the actual critical period of the world economy, it shows continuous improvements in research and innovation.

Design/methodology/approach

Within a market analysis and the collaboration between engineering and biomedical research fields, it was outlined a new product concept able to satisfy the patient’s and physician’s requirements with the focus on the enhancement of the stent anchorage. As a result, the concept of a custom- or tailor-made stent was identified as a potential solution. Moreover, additive technologies were identified as the economically sustainable processes for manufacturing these innovative stents. In the present paper, different types of stents were derived from the proposed concept, they were designed, manufactured and their anchorage capability was tested. In particular, the procedures adopted for their design are described and discussed. Moreover, silicone fused deposition modelling was adopted and two types of deposition method, namely, layer-by-layer and continuous, were used to manufacture the devices identifying their pro, cons and limits. Finally, the stents were tested against migration and results were compared with one of the most widely used today.

Findings

The results show how additive manufacturing allowed to manufacture more efficient and migration resistant stents.

Originality/value

It is expected that this new stent design will reduce the risk of complications in stenting, as granulation, thanks to a more uniform stress distribution on the trachea tissues. These improved characteristics will allow to enhance the quality of both the product and the patient’s healthcare.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to describe the World of Warcraft (WoW) experience, where students in a graduate English seminar played WoW to ground their learning about digital literacies. Through the experience, students developed their own digital literacies and learned to enter academic discourse about games and digital literacies.

Design/methodology/approach

In the paper, the instructor and eight students describe the purpose, design and outcomes of the experience. Over the course of a month, the group coordinated logistics and roles, each person created a character, each character reached the threshold level for low-level dungeons, the whole class played several dungeons together and the class engaged in metaconversation about the experience.

Findings

The instructor reflects on the problem of practice that the WoW experience addressed and the instructional organization of the experience. The students, who came into the WoW experience with a range of prior knowledge about games and Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Games, reflect on what challenges they faced while learning to play and develop their own digital literacies, how they assembled resources to overcome challenges, how their views of digital literacies and games shifted from the experience and how the experience helped them rethink teaching first-year composition.

Originality/value

As the WoW experience illustrates, finding ways to connect games to advanced graduate courses can create fun, frustration and powerful learning experiences for students as they maneuver complex content.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine whether the quality of financial reporting has improved after the adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) in Europe and across the world. The study investigates the impact of IFRS on income smoothing and earnings management in different geographic regions under different legal origins and disclosure environments.

Design/methodology/approach

To measure income smoothing in the pre- and post-IFRS periods, the authors use the coefficient of variation and the panel unit root model proposed by Im et al. (2003) for testing whether net income is stationary throughout the sample period. The study uses a dynamic panel estimation framework, as it captures the dynamics of IFRS on discretionary accruals efficiently. Discretionary accruals are used to measure earnings management.

Findings

The results suggest that the adoption of high quality standards, such as IFRS, reduces income smoothing and earnings management. In addition, the study finds that earnings management has decreased in the post-IFRS period, in particular, for French and Scandinavian civil law countries, but not for German civil law countries and common law countries. The latter can be explained by the fact that common law countries have strong investor protection laws, strict law enforcement and high disclosure levels of financial information. The study also finds empirical evidence that the adoption of IFRS reduces earnings management in countries with high levels of financial disclosure. Overall, the study shows that the adoption of IFRS improved the quality of financial reporting.

Originality/value

This study is useful for accounting standard setters across the world, including those countries that have not yet decided to adopt IFRS. The study contributes to the literature by examining the adoption of IFRS in income smoothing and earnings management under different legal regimes and disclosure environments by using advanced empirical methodologies.

Abstract

Fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) materials are currently used for concrete structures in areas where corrosion problems are serious. Recent applications of FRP rebars in normal reinforced concrete structures in fact cannot fully utilise the strength of FRP. A more rational use of FRP would be in the area of prestressed concrete (PC) structures. In spite of the superb strength provision of FRP tendons over steel tendons, use of FRP PC members is often questioned by practising design engineers. This is largely due to the brittleness of FRP tendons and lack of ductility in FRP RC structures. Recent research has demonstrated some important findings in promoting the confidence of adopting FRP RC beams. This paper reviews some recent work on the use of FRP in PC structures. Future possible research areas are also highlighted.

Abstract

Purpose

Increasing diversity in public service provision brings potential benefits around choice and innovation, but could also blur lines of accountability and create weak governance. The purpose of this paper is to provide a new approach to accountability, to help leaders develop effective network governance.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper provides a summative review of previous thinking about good governance and presents the new concept of a “web of accountability”. It examines four potential typologies of public service delivery and considers potential governance models and the accountability issues for leaders that arise in each one. The theory and challenge of securing democratic anchorage is used as a framework against which to test each model.

Findings

The paper finds that all the potential typologies considered raise different questions for local leaders about accountability and good governance. None perfectly secures democratic anchorage when considered against the four criteria which help to anchor network governance in a democratic society, but they all have different strengths in terms of accountability, transparency, involvement and scrutiny.

Practical implications

The paper offers a new practical tool, the Accountability Works for You framework, as one way of assessing governance arrangements and developing a locally‐owned approach to accountability.

Originality/value

The paper uses original research and the unique concept of the “web of accountability” developed by the author's organisation, the Centre for Public Scrutiny. Accountability Works for You is a new framework available for public sector leaders. It emphasises culture and behaviours (“software”) over process and structure (“hardware”) in thinking about governance.
