Abstract

Currently undergoing NASA flight testing is the Grumman X‐29 forward swept wing (FSW) demonstrator aircraft which was built under a contract sponsored by the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and funded through the Air Force. The FSW aircraft first took to the air in December, 1984 and after four flights with the manufacturer was handed over to NASA for a verification programme involving all the benefits of this design. Advanced technology features which will be demonstrated are the forward swept wing for improved aerodynamic efficiency and good control at high angles of attack; tailored composite wing structure that resists the tendency towards structural divergence inherent in this configuration; thin supercritical aerofoil for improved transonic performance at high lift coefficients; variable camber trailing edge to reduce drag at all lift coefficients and avoid supersonic drag associated with aerofoil camber; canard longitudinal control for efficient trimming of variable camber pitching moments and favourable canard‐wing interactions; highly relaxed static stability for very low trim drag at all Mach numbers; and a digital fly‐by‐wire flight control system.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the creation and sharing of information by Bangladeshi women participants in a community informatics project and to assess to what extent the information provided to them meets their short and longer-term needs.

Design/methodology/approach

The analysis is based on data collected during a workshop with village women in Dhaka and focus group discussions in rural Bangladesh in March and April 2019. The information continuum model is used as a framework to analyse the data.

Findings

The study shows that the women document their learning and share it with their families and communities and that they are very conscious of the importance of keeping analogue back-ups of the information provided to them in digital format. They use notebooks to write down information that they find useful and they copy information provided to them on brown paper sheets hung in the village community houses.

Practical implications

This paper raises questions about how information is communicated to village women, organised and integrated in a community informatics project, and more generally about the suitability and sustainability of providing information in digital formats in a developing country.

Originality/value

The paper shows how village women participants in a community informatics project in Bangladesh took the initiative to create and preserve the information that was useful to them in analogue formats to remedy the limitations of the digital formats and to keep the information accessible in the longer term.

Abstract

Major technical advances were featured at the Show, particularly those developments that will be coming into service in the very near future. An outstanding demonstration was given by the Airbus Industrie A 300B2 Fly‐By‐Wire (FBW) whose autopilot simulates the control laws of the A 320. The pilot flies the aircraft through the FBW autopilot using the sidestick controllers as in the A 320, which is due to make its first flight in March, 1987. A convincing display by the A 300 FBW began with a slow fly‐past in landing configuration with gear and flaps down at a speed of about 100 knots. At mid‐runway position, the crew simulate a windshear encounter and the captain pulls back on the stick as might happen in such a situation. In a standard ‘conventional’ aircraft, this would lead to a stall with potentially disastrous consequences, but with FBW the pitch angle increases to the point where the wing reaches its maximum lift position and stays there. The ‘alpha‐floor’ protection incorporated in the aircraft then automatically increased engine power and the combination of maximum lift and power results in a climb‐out at 3,000ft/min. In another manoeuvre, the aircraft is positioned at an angle of attack of 15.5° in order to stabilise speed at 95–100 knots and only just below the limit of 17° — 18°. Also demonstrated was a stall turn with the nose up to maximum angle of attack and bank angle of 30° which stops there despite the fully‐deflected stick position. The engine power in this manoeuvre is controlled manually.

Integrating a microcomputer with a videotape recorder (VCR) and facsimile machine produces a powerful information handling system—InfoStation. The VCR can be used to backup the data on the microcomputer's hard disk, and also can be used to archive massive amounts of information for selective retrieval and use. The VCR can function as a publication medium containing both analog and digital information that can be retrieved by a video receiver and a microcomputer; and the VCR can be used to capture digital data broadcast by a television station, for later retrieval and use on a microcomputer. The facsimile machine is a powerful device for inputting bit‐map images of documents into the microcomputer and VCR, and can be used to print and/or transmit those documents to other facsimile machines on demand.

Abstract

The hydrologic losses due to net evaporation in the Aral Sea have interesting analogs in the interior-drainage basins of the American West. Each of the three places discussed here – the Salton Sea, Owens Lake, and Mono Lake – has its own unique historical and geographic circumstances, but the story of each place has certain parallels to the Aral Sea disaster. Each place experienced dramatic water losses during much of the 20th century, but the emergence of environmental science and law in recent decades has caused significant policy changes. The Salton Sea is still declining, and modest efforts by state and federal agencies to halt the decline are inadequate. A proposal to build dikes to save part of the water body and convert the rest to salt evaporation ponds cited the Aral Sea as a model for the Salton Sea's future. The dry Owens Lake bed yields windblown dust that exceeds the Clean Air standard for fine particulate matter (PM 10), so Los Angeles is now required to release additional water back into the basin to create more shallow wetlands. In Mono Lake, a negotiated settlement has reversed the water loss while protecting vital interests of all parties, and a substantial ecological restoration plan is being implemented. The history of the American analogs to the Aral Sea, especially the success story of Mono Lake, may indicate potential pathways to progress in reducing problems caused by large-scale water diversion.

Abstract

Purpose

Technology enabled care (TEC) equipment has been a part of adult social care (ASC) in most areas of the UK for decades. More recently, commissioners have been exploring mainstream technologies’ potential to support older people living in the community. The purpose of this paper is to examine the challenges and opportunities presented by the growing application of mainstream technologies in ASC against the backdrop of the planned UK-wide switchover from analogue to digital telecommunications by 2025.

Design/methodology/approach

This general review uses research evidence, literature, industry standards and policy documents to address the challenges presented by the UK’s digital switchover and the potential role of mainstream technologies such as “smart speakers” in ASC.

Findings

The use of digital TEC and mainstream devices in ASC brings challenges related to access to reliable internet connections in parts of the UK; the need to update TEC safety standards; the ethics, privacy and data security measures that ensure digital products and services safeguard the interests of users; and evidence and commissioning practice.

Originality/value

This general review explores emerging areas of policy and research related to the planned UK digital switchover and the use of mainstream technologies in ASC. It offers a conceptual approach and suggests ways forward for research, regulatory and commissioning agendas.

This paper traces the history of Dowty Electronics' involvement in B.I.T.E. over the last ten years; it describes the techniques used, successes and failures, and customer reactions. Applications include the full authority engine control for the Olympus 593 in Concorde, the high integrity wing flaps controller for the BAe 146 shorthaul jet, the engine spool speed limiter for the RB‐211–524 in the Boeing 747, and the high integrity engine bleed valve controller for the RB‐211–535 in the Boeing 757 aircraft.
