Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to carry out numerical modeling to predict aerodynamic noise radiation from four different Savonius rotor blade profile.

Design/methodology/approach

Incompressible unsteady reynolds-averaged navier-stokes (URANS) approach using gamma–theta turbulence model is conducted to obtain the time accurate turbulent flow field. The Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings (FW-H) acoustic analogy formulation is used for noise predictions at optimal tip speed ratio (TSR).

Findings

The mean torque and power coefficients are compared with the experimental data and acceptable agreement is observed. The total and Mono+Dipole noise graphs are presented. A discrete tonal component at low frequencies in all graphs is attributed to the blade passing frequency at the given TSR. According to the noise prediction results, Bach type rotor has the lowest level of noise emission. The effect of TSR on the noise level from the Bach rotor is investigated. A direct relation between angular velocity and the noise emission is found.

Practical implications

The savonius rotor is a type of vertical axis wind turbines suited for mounting in the vicinity of residential areas. Also, wind turbines wherein operation are efficient sources of tonal and broadband noises and affect the inhabitable environment adversely. Therefore, the acoustic pollution assessment is essential for the installation of wind turbines in residential areas.

Originality/value

This study aims to investigate the radiated noise level of four common Savonius rotor blade profiles, namely, Bach type, Benesh type, semi-elliptic and conventional. As stated above, numbers of studies exploit the URANS method coupled with the FW-H analogy to predict the aeroacoustics behavior of wind turbines. Therefore, this approach is chosen in this research to deal with the aeroacoustics and aerodynamic calculation of the flow field around the aforementioned Savonius blade profiles. The effect of optimal TSR on the emitted noise and the contribution of thickness, loading and quadrupole sources are of interest in this study.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to design a plasmonic structure that can be used simultaneously as a heater and a refractive index sensor applicable for heating and sensing cycles of lab-on-chip (LOC).

Design/methodology/approach

The authors report on the full optical method applicable in the heating and sensing cycles of LOC based on the plasmonic nanostructure. The novelty of this proposed structure is due to the fact that a structure simultaneously acts as a heater and a sensor.

Findings

In terms of the performance of the proposed structure as an analyte detection sensor, in addition to the real-time measurement, there is no need to labeling the sample. In terms of the performance of the proposed structure as a plasmonic heater, the uniformity and speed of the heating and cooling cycles have been greatly improved. Also, there is no need for experts and laboratory conditions; therefore, our proposed method can meet the conditions of point of care testing.

Abstract

Purpose

A set of routers that are connected over communication channels can from network-on-chip (NoC). High performance, scalability, modularity and the ability to parallel the structure of the communications are some of its advantages. Because of the growing number of cores of NoC, their arrangement has got more valuable. The mapping action is done based on assigning different functional units to different nodes on the NoC, and the way it is done contains a significant effect on implementation and network power utilization. The NoC mapping issue is one of the NP-hard problems. Therefore, for achieving optimal or near-optimal answers, meta-heuristic algorithms are the perfect choices. The purpose of this paper is to design a novel procedure for mapping process cores for reducing communication delays and cost parameters. A multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm standing on crowding distance (MOPSO-CD) has been used for this purpose.

Design/methodology/approach

In the proposed approach, in which the two-dimensional mesh topology has been used as base construction, the mapping operation is divided into two stages as follows: allocating the tasks to suitable cores of intellectual property; and plotting the map of these cores in a specific tile on the platform of NoC.

Findings

The proposed method has dramatically improved the related problems and limitations of meta-heuristic algorithms. This algorithm performs better than the particle swarm optimization (PSO) and genetic algorithm in convergence to the Pareto, producing a proficiently divided collection of solving ways and the computational time. The results of the simulation also show that the delay parameter of the proposed method is 1.1 per cent better than the genetic algorithm and 0.5 per cent better than the PSO algorithm. Also, in the communication cost parameter, the proposed method has 2.7 per cent better action than a genetic algorithm and 0.16 per cent better action than the PSO algorithm.

Originality/value

As yet, the MOPSO-CD algorithm has not been used for solving the task mapping issue in the NoC.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research paper is to adapt and validate a useful instrument to diagnose the knowledge, attitudes, behaviours and intention to participate (KABIP) towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in higher education institutions (HEIs) from the public administration in developing countries.

Design/methodology/approach

The study was carried out using the Delphi technique, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). For the Delphi method, 30 experts participated in three rounds. For the EFA and CFA, a sample of 790 people was selected. The instrument items were extracted from relevant scales on the topic.

Findings

The reliability and internal consistency of the instrument were tested and confirmed. Therefore, this study gives a scientific tool to measure the KABIP towards SDGs in different sectors of the public administration, and it can be used in developing countries.

Originality/value

The new questionnaire with 66 items and four dimensions can be used to diagnose KABIP towards SDGs at HEIs in developing countries. It has a very important implications because, although attention for SDGs around the world is increasing, only a limited number of valid scientific instrument that measure aspects related to it is available. Furthermore, the knowledge, attitudes, behaviour and intention to participate scale can facilitate the creation of new strategies regarding SDGs in developing countries.
