Abstract

Purpose

Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) has the potential to provide substantial opportunities for organizations to improve their information technology without cost and management concerns. However, organizations have not utilized it to the desired level because it is very challenging for them to completely transform their basic conventional methods of running software into SaaS as a high-tech method. On the other hand, organizations have doubt which factors should be mostly considered if they want to move to SaaS. Therefore, investigating the adoption of SaaS can contribute organizations to benefit from this technology. The purpose of this paper is to provide a good insight into SaaS technology adoption.

Design/methodology/approach

Considering Technology, Organization and Environment (TOE) framework and diffusion of innovation (DOI) theory as the basis, 22 university experts expressed their idea about the proposed model of SaaS adoption. Then, 30 IT professional in 15 IT enterprises that had adopted SaaS were asked to fill the questionnaire related to fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) based on linguistic preference relations (LinPreRa) in order to rank the submitted criteria.

Findings

The findings demonstrate that all attributes of Technology (relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability, observability and security and privacy), Organization (IT resource, sharing and collaboration culture) and environment (competitive pressure, social influence) are influential in the adoption of SaaS. Moreover, the top five influential factors are relative advantage, competitive pressure, security and privacy, sharing and collaboration culture and social influence based on adopter’s opinions.

Research limitations/implications

For researchers, this study provides a useful literature, which can help them in related subject. In addition, it applies IT adoption theories in SaaS context that can be extended in future studies. For organizations, this study derives priority of factors by which they can make strong decisions about adoption of SaaS.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the adoption of SaaS technology using well-known IT adoption theories. A version of Fuzzy AHP based on LinPreRa was used in order to cover the limitations of previous methodologies of ranking the criteria.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to compare the attitude of the managers of libraries located at Iran, Tehran and Shahid Beheshti Medical Sciences Universities' training hospitals, on the status of information technology (IT) in the mentioned libraries.

Design/methodology/approach

This study employed a researcher‐made questionnaire. The managers of 40 hospital libraries of Iran, Tehran and Shahid Beheshti Universities formed the population of the research. To analyze the collected data, the statistical software SPSS (version 17) was used.

Findings

Results showed that 12.5 per cent of Tehran, 15.6 per cent of Iran and 25 per cent of Shahid Beheshti Universities library managers agreed, to a very large extent, on the application and development of IT and its tools and 93.7 per cent of the managers from all three hospital libraries deemed the application of IT most necessary. The managers believed that the greatest advantage of IT is concerned with the reduction of human efforts (59.4 per cent), and 100 per cent of the managers acknowledged the need for further promotion of their skills in a wide variety of IT issues. In total, 16.1 per cent at Tehran, 12.9 per cent at Iran and 29 per cent at Shahid Beheshti University considerably approved of formal education for the promotion of their librarians' skills.

Originality/value

This study is a step towards acknowledging the contribution, status, and value of hospital libraries to the health sector by the library managers in theory and practice, in the shadow of considering their librarians as network experts, information media and system designers, and technology experts.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the effects of audit quality on the cost of capital in Ghana.

Design/methodology/approach

Non-financial firms listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) as well as non-listed firms from the database of Ghana Club 100 were included in the sample. Series are yearly, covering a sample of 40 firms during the six-year period, 2008-2013. The study employed the positivist research paradigm to establish the relationship between audit quality and the cost of capital.

Findings

There is evidence to suggest that the cost of debt and the overall cost of capital of firms in Ghana can be explained by the quality of the external auditors. The results also show that the large size of the board is associated with low cost of debt.

Research limitations/implications

The fact that the choice of quality measure is based on firm size only and other measurements of audit quality could not be measured. Future research may examine how other approaches to measuring audit quality affect cost of capital.

Practical implications

The results significant for those charged with assurance and regulation, as well as lenders and managers of companies.

Originality/value

The authors investigate how external auditing quality affects the cost of capital of firms operating in Ghana.

Abstract

Purpose

A large number of systematic reviews (SRs) studies have been performed in the cloud computing field, demonstrating miscellaneous outcomes and utilizing different approaches. Accordingly, a meta-review of cloud SRs is needed to appraise the results of such studies and create an integrated understanding. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

A tertiary study was conducted using a systematic method to analyze SRs including two stages: searching and screening the SRs and thematic synthesis of results. As a qualitative data management tool, Nvivo software was used to support the research process, for data coding and synthesis.

Findings

First, by searching electronic sources between the year of 2011–2016, out of a total of 142 identified articles, 94 articles were included according to pre-determined criteria, of which 76 articles were approved after qualitative evaluation. In the second stage, identifying the research themes, a map of the concepts and issues related to each theme was drawn up. The analysis shows that the quality of articles has improved but can be further enhanced using methodological guidelines as well as supporting tools. The research has focused more on the technical aspect, although there is an equal demand for synthesizing of cloud governance concepts.

Originality/value

This is the first tertiary study which presents the main research themes and concepts of cloud SRs in form of thematic maps by using the thematic synthesis and SR methods. This paper also provides some recommendations to improve reviews after evaluating the quality of papers. This study can support reviewers for future SRs in the field and also helps practitioners and managers to have a better understanding of different aspects of cloud computing.
