Abstract

Purpose

Histopathology biopsy imaging is currently the gold standard for the diagnosis of breast cancer in clinical practice. Pathologists examine the images at various magnifications to identify the type of tumor because if only one magnification is taken into account, the decision may not be accurate. This study explores the performance of transfer learning and late fusion to construct multi-scale ensembles that fuse different magnification-specific deep learning models for the binary classification of breast tumor slides.

Design/methodology/approach

Three pretrained deep learning techniques (DenseNet 201, MobileNet v2 and Inception v3) were used to classify breast tumor images over the four magnification factors of the Breast Cancer Histopathological Image Classification dataset (40×, 100×, 200× and 400×). To fuse the predictions of the models trained on different magnification factors, different aggregators were used, including weighted voting and seven meta-classifiers trained on slide predictions using class labels and the probabilities assigned to each class. The best cluster of the outperforming models was chosen using the Scott–Knott statistical test, and the top models were ranked using the Borda count voting system.

Findings

This study recommends the use of transfer learning and late fusion for histopathological breast cancer image classification by constructing multi-magnification ensembles because they perform better than models trained on each magnification separately.

Originality/value

The best multi-scale ensembles outperformed state-of-the-art integrated models and achieved an accuracy mean value of 98.82 per cent, precision of 98.46 per cent, recall of 100 per cent and F1-score of 99.20 per cent.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze how sustainability was operationalized in the Spanish universities through plans and actions that contribute actively to the achievement of the sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic search and content analysis served to examine information available on websites belonging to the 76 universities listed in the Conference of Rectors of the Spanish Universities (CRUE).

Findings

The participation of Spanish universities on initiatives focused on sustainability is very limited, highlighting the negligible role of private institutions in which topics like sustainability and the 2030 Agenda/SDGs were scarcely addressed.

Originality/value

The study outlines the actual extent of the inclusion of sustainability in particular co-curricular actions toward the SDGs in the CRUE. The findings enable to define a long-term sustainability road map for the Spanish university system.

Abstract

Purpose

It is well known in the mining industry that the increase in failures and breakdowns is due mainly to a poor maintenance policy for the equipment, in addition to the difficult access that specialized personnel have to combat the breakdown, which translates into more machine downtime. For this reason, this study aims to propose a remote assistance model for diagnosing and repairing critical breakdowns in mining industry trucks using augmented reality techniques and data analytics with a quality approach that considerably reduces response times, thus optimizing human resources.

Design/methodology/approach

In this work, the six-phase CRIPS-DM methodology is used. Initially, the problem of fault diagnosis in trucks used in the extraction of material in the mining industry is addressed. The authors then propose a model under study that seeks a real-time connection between a service technician attending the truck at the mine site and a specialist located at a remote location, considering the data transmission requirements and the machine's characterization.

Findings

It is considered that the theoretical results obtained in the development of this study are satisfactory from the business point of view since, in the first instance, it fulfills specific objectives related to the telecare process. On the other hand, from the data mining point of view, the results manage to comply with the theoretical aspects of the establishment of failure prediction models through the application of the CRISP-DM methodology. All of the above opens the possibility of developing prediction models through machine learning and establishing the best model for the objective of failure prediction.

Originality/value

The original contribution of this work is the proposal of the design of a remote assistance model for diagnosing and repairing critical failures in the mining industry, considering augmented reality and data analytics. Furthermore, the integration of remote assistance, the characterization of the CAEX, their maintenance information and the failure prediction models allow the establishment of a quality-based model since the database with which the learning machine will work is constantly updated.
