Abstract
The main aim of the evaluation was to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the service in order to contribute to its further development and sustainability. The study was carried out in partnership between Lincolnshire Adult Social Care and Lincolnshire Primary Care Trust. A secondary aim was to determine the impact of the service on the quality of life and independence of service users using appropriate scales. These measurements were performed in parallel with an audit of the performance and cost effectiveness of the service. Service users, carers and staff all contributed to the evaluation. Initial results have indicated a positive response to the equipment, with a reduction in anxiety and increased independence for both the service user and carer.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to propose a new method based on nonlinear least squares (NLS) for solving the parameters of nonlinear grey Bernoulli model (NGBM(1,1)) and to verify the proposed model using the case of employee demand prediction of high-tech enterprises in China.
Design/methodology/approach
First of all, minimising the square sum of fitting error of grey differential equation of NGBM(1,1) is taken as the optimisation target and the parameters of classic grey model (GM(1,1)) are set as the initial value of parameter vector. Afterwards, the structural parameters and power exponents are solved by using the Gauss-Newton iteration algorithm so as to calculate the parameters of NGBM(1,1) under given rules for ceasing the algorithm. Finally, by taking the employee demand of high-tech enterprises in the state-level high-tech industrial development zone in China as examples, the validity of the new method is verified.
Findings
The results show that the parameter estimation algorithm based on the NLS method can effectively identify the power exponents of NGBM(1,1) and therefore can favourably adapt to the nonlinear fluctuations of sequences. In addition, the algorithm is superior to the GM(1,1) model, grey Verhulst model, and Quadratic-Exponential smoothing algorithm in terms of the simulation and prediction accuracy.
Research limitations/implications
Under the framework of solving parameters based on NLS, various aspects of NGBM(1,1) remain to be further investigated including background value, initial condition and variable structural modelling methods.
Practical implications
The parameter estimation algorithm based on NLS can effectively identify the power exponent of NGBM(1,1) and therefore it can favourably adapt to the nonlinear fluctuation of sequences.
Originality/value
According to the basic principle of NLS, a new method for solving the parameters of NGBM(1,1) is proposed by using the Gauss-Newton iteration algorithm. Moreover, by conducting the modelling case about employees demand in high-tech enterprises in China, the effectiveness and superiority of the new method are verified.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to propose an efficient computational technique, which uses Haar wavelets collocation approach coupled with the Newton-Raphson method and solves the following class of system of Lane–Emden equations:
Design/methodology/approach
To deal with singularity, Haar wavelets are used, and to deal with the nonlinear system of equations that arise during computation, the Newton-Raphson method is used. The convergence of these methods is also established and the results are compared with existing techniques.
Findings
The authors propose three methods based on uniform Haar wavelets approximation coupled with the Newton-Raphson method. The authors obtain quadratic convergence for the Haar wavelets collocation method. Test problems are solved to validate various computational aspects of the Haar wavelets approach. The authors observe that with only a few spatial divisions the authors can obtain highly accurate solutions for both initial value problems and boundary value problems.
Originality/value
The results presented in this paper do not exist in the literature. The system of nonlinear singular differential equations is not easy to handle as they are singular, as well as nonlinear. To the best of the knowledge, these are the first results for a system of nonlinear singular differential equations, by using the Haar wavelets collocation approach coupled with the Newton-Raphson method. The results developed in this paper can be used to solve problems arising in different branches of science and engineering.

Abstract
Science has become a powerful tool for examining our bodies, our environment, and our universe. In fact, we have adopted science as the technique of choice for examining most phenomena. The intent of this manuscript is to critique the role of science as it pertains to investigating social phenomena, i.e. entrepreneurship, and offer a highly unique twist on the discourse. An overview of historical scientific results leads into the introduction of a Social Periodic Table. The conclusion is that science is quite often the improper tool to use in order to capture the essence of entrepreneurial phenomena. Some suggestions are offered for future research perspectives. The paper does not rehash the science debate from the 1980s marketing literature.

Abstract
Purpose
Imperfections in manufacturing processes may cause unwanted connections (faults) that are added to the nominal, “golden”, design of an electronic circuit. By fault simulation one simulates all situations. Normally this leads to a large list of simulations in which for each defect a steady-state (direct current (DC)) solution is determined followed by a transient simulation. The purpose of this paper is to improve the robustness and the efficiency of these simulations.
Design/methodology/approach
Determining the DC solution can be very hard. For this the authors present an adaptive time-domain source stepping procedure that can deal with controlled sources. The method can easily be combined with existing pseudo-transient procedures. The method is robust and efficient. In the subsequent transient simulation the solution of a fault is compared to a golden, fault-free, solution. A strategy is developed to efficiently simulate the faulty solutions until their moment of detection.
Findings
The paper fully exploits the hierarchical structure of the circuit in the simulation process to bypass parts of the circuit that appear to be unaffected by the fault. Accurate prediction and efficient solution procedures lead to fast fault simulation.
Originality/value
The fast fault simulation helps to store a database with detectable deviations for each fault. If such a detectable output “matches” a result of a product that has been returned because of malfunctioning it helps to identify the subcircuit that may contain the real fault. One aims to detect as much as possible candidate faults. Because of the many options the simulations must be very efficient.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to challenge the assumption that brands of everyday products have only used lifestyle marketing in the past 30 years by conducting the first case study of the marketing practices of the Swedish toothpaste brand Stomatol (1910–1940). Through visual social semiotic analysis, it explores how the brand was a pioneer in lifestyle marketing, using discourses of modernity, beauty and the Swedish “way of life” to sell its toothpaste.
Design/methodology/approach
Two hundred Stomatol advertisements were collected from the Swedish Historical Newspaper Archive and analysed using visual social semiotics. The analysis considers how the idea of a cultural Swedishness centred around modernity and beauty developed between 1910 and 1940, and how both linguistic and semiotic resources were used to make these claims seem credible.
Findings
At a time when its main adversaries were capitalising upon science in their advertisements to construct authority and credibility, Stomatol instead targeted lifestyle. Modernity, beauty and the Swedish “way of life” were central themes of their marketing campaigns, yet the way these themes were articulated varied between 1910 and 1940 in accordance with changing popular discourse. This made Stomatol more competitive than other toothpaste brands because it was able to sell an experience rather than a product, turning it into Sweden’s most popular toothpaste.
Originality/value
This paper demonstrates the importance of case studies to challenge the assumption that toothpaste brands have only used lifestyle marketing in the past 30 years (a claim based on Anglocentrism). It also showcases the need to further investigate non-Anglo countries when conducting research into lifestyle marketing to build a more nuanced perspective on its origins and the supposed novelty of (largely) US practices. Thus, Stomatol makes an important case for Sweden as a trailblazer in lifestyle marketing.

Abstract
Purpose
Key challenges in evaluating the performance of a robotic manipulator are disturbances that rise internally and externally. Effects of non-linear disturbances like varying payload and joint friction can adversely affect the tracking performance in a robotic manipulator. This paper aims to discuss motion control of a three-link spatial manipulator using a computed torque observer-based control technique.
Design/methodology/approach
The overall motion control problem consists of derivation of kinematic and dynamic model of the manipulator followed by the control design to achieve desired manipulator response. In this study, the manipulator is subjected to uncertain varying load disturbances. The proposed motion controller compensates the effect of the disturbances and guarantees the convergence of tracking error to steady state value.
Findings
One major advantage of using observer-based control is positioning accuracy with robustness to parameter uncertainty and fast dynamics response. The performance of the proposed control technique is validated through real-time experiments conducted on the manipulator. The experiment results confirm the superior performance of the control system in achieving perfect tracking.
Originality/value
This paper demonstrates an observer-based control technique over a serial spatial manipulator which can be applied different robotic configurations under the effect of varying disturbances.
