Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the design and control of a symmetric multilevel inverter (MLI) using grey wolf optimization and differential evolution algorithms.

Design/methodology/approach

The optimal modulation index along with the switching angles are calculated for an 11 level inverter. Harmonics are used to estimate the quality of output voltage and measuring the improvement of the power quality.

Findings

The simulation is carried out in MATLAB/Simulink for 11 levels of symmetric MLI and compared with the conventional inverter design. A solar photovoltaic array-based experimental setup is considered to provide the input for symmetric MLI. Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) based controller is used to provide the switching pulses for the inverter switches.

Originality/value

Attempted to develop a system with different optimization techniques.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to deal with application of artificial intelligence for solving real time control complication adhered with the controlled operation of a buck power converter. This type of converter finds application for power conversion at various levels for the direct current-direct current power industry to step down the input voltage.

Design/methodology/approach

Use of ANN-RL (Artificial Neural Networks- Reinforcement Learning)-based control algorithm to control buck power converter shows robustness against parameter and load variation. Because of non-linearity instigated by element used for switching, control of this converter becomes an arduous control predicament. All the classical control techniques are based on an approximate linear model of the step down converter and these techniques fail to handle actual non-linearity.

Findings

In this paper, a reinforcement learning-based algorithm has been used to handle and control buck power converter output voltage, without approximating the model of converter. The non-linearity instigated in converter is subjected to state of switch. Model of buck power converter is defined as a multi-step decision problem so that it can be solved using mathematical model of Markov decision process (MDP) and, in turn, reinforcement learning can be implemented. As MDP model is available for a discrete state system so model of converter has to be discretized and then value iteration is applied and output is analyzed. Load regulation and integral time absolute error analysis is done to show efficacy of this technique.

Originality/value

To mitigate the effect of discretization function approximation using neural network is applied. MATrix LABoratory has been used for implementation and result indicates an improvement in the overall response.

Abstract

Purpose

Partial shading causes significant power decreases in the PV systems. The purpose of this paper is to address this problem, connectivity regulation is designed to reduce partial shading problems.

Design/methodology/approach

In this approach, the partial shading was estimated and dispersed evenly on the whole array by global shade dispersion technique (GSD). The grey wolf algorithm was implemented for the interconnection of arrays by an efficient switching matrix.

Findings

After the implementation of the GSD technique using a grey wolf algorithm, the performance under different shading conditions was analyzed using the MatLab simulation tool. The results were compared with total cross-tied (TCT), Su Do Ku and the proposed method of reconfiguration, where the proposed method improves the maximum power of the PV system appropriately.

Research limitations/implications

This methodology uses any size of PV systems.

Social implications

Replacement of conventional energy systems with renewable energy systems such as solar helps the environment clean and green.

Originality/value

The GSD interconnection scheme using the grey wolf optimization algorithm has proved an improved output performance compared with the existing TCT and Sudoku based reconfiguration techniques. By comparing with existing techniques in literature, the proposed method is more advantageous for reducing mismatch losses between the modules of any size of the PV array with less operating time.

During 15–25 July 1995, a trip was made to Russia by students and faculty members of the Hofstra University psychology department, as part of its exchange program with St. Petersburg State University. This program was first organized in 1990 by Howard Kassinove, chairperson of the psychology department at Hofstra, in conjunction with Alexander I. Yuriev, head of the Department of Political Psychology at St. Petersburg State University. Professor Sergey Tsytsarev and others assisted. This is the first such department in Russia, initiated by Yuriev “when the foundations of the totalitarian system started shaking…and lots of people were involved in political activities,” stated Albert A. Krylov, dean of the psychology department.

Abstract

In the last four years, since Volume I of this Bibliography first appeared, there has been an explosion of literature in all the main functional areas of business. This wealth of material poses problems for the researcher in management studies — and, of course, for the librarian: uncovering what has been written in any one area is not an easy task. This volume aims to help the librarian and the researcher overcome some of the immediate problems of identification of material. It is an annotated bibliography of management, drawing on the wide variety of literature produced by MCB University Press. Over the last four years, MCB University Press has produced an extensive range of books and serial publications covering most of the established and many of the developing areas of management. Abstract

Purpose

These implementations not only generate excessive voltage levels to enhance the quality of power but also include a detailed investigating of the various modulation methods and control schemes for multilevel inverter (MLI) topologies. Reduced harmonic modulation technology is used to produce 11-level output voltage with the production of renewable energy applications. The simulation is done in the MATLAB/Simulink for 11-level symmetric MLI and is correlated with the conventional inverter design.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper is focused on investigating the different types of asymmetric, symmetric and hybrid topologies and control methods used for the modular multilevel inverter (MMI) operation. Classical MLI configurations are affected by performance issues such as poor power quality, uneconomic structure and low efficiency.

Findings

The variations in both carrier and reference signals and their performance are analyzed for the proposed inverter topologies. The simulation result compares unipolar and bipolar pulse-width modulation (PWM) techniques with total harmonic distortion (THD) results. The solar-fed 11-level MMI is controlled using various modulation strategies, which are connected to marine emergency lighting loads. Various modulation techniques are used to control the solar-fed 11-level MMI, which is connected to marine emergency lighting loads. The entire hardware system is controlled by using SPARTAN 3A field programmable gate array (FPGA) board and the least harmonics are obtained by improving the power quality.

Originality/value

The simulation result compares unipolar and bipolar PWM techniques with THD results.
