Abstract

We, in the International Society for Hybrid Microelectronics, are reflecting the changes in our industry but we must also brace ourselves to accept the challenges. In our efforts within the Society to become more professional we have in fact initiated many changes and already faced many challenges. The Corporate Membership policy has been one whereby companies involved in all aspects of the hybrid microelectronic industry, suppliers, manufacturers and, of even greater importance, customers can become Corporate Members of ISHM and nominate two individual members to represent their interests. It was hoped that this would encourage more corporate backing for our projects which, if our annual exhibition, Hybrid MicroTech, is any guide, has been very successful. Our Corporate Members have beaten a path to our door in order to exhibit at this new Hybrid Microelectronics event, surely now becoming the premier meeting place for our industry in the UK.

Abstract

The Royal Scot Hotel, Edinburgh, provided the venue for the 6th Annual Northern Symposium on 17th November, 1983, organised by the ICT in conjunction with the ECIF, the Northern (UK) Circuit Group and the IMF (PC Group). In welcoming some 60 delegates to the day's proceedings, Mr J. B. Walker, an Executive Member of the ICT Council, explained that this was the third occasion on which this annual event was being held in Edinburgh and that, as such, it was clearly going from strength to strength. Mr Walker then introduced Mr S. Jones, an ICT Council member, as Session Chairman for the morning.

Abstract

Following the discussion at our recent Annual General Meeting, a questionnaire was sent out to all members. Almost half of them replied despite the fact that the time allowed for returning the questionnaire had been kept very short. Some members even provided detailed comments.

Abstract

On 20 April ISHM‐Benelux held its 1988 Spring meeting at the Grand Hotel Heerlen. This meeting was totally devoted to implantable devices, in particular to the technologies used for these high reliability, extremely demanding devices. For this meeting ISHM‐Benelux was the guest of the Kerkrade facility of Medtronic. Medtronic (headquartered in Minneapolis, USA) is the world's leading manufacturer of implantable electronic devices. Apart from the assembly of pacemakers and heart‐wires, the Kerkrade facility acts as a manufacturing technology centre for Medtronic's European facilities.

Abstract

Dr B. T. K. Barry has been appointed Director of the International Tin Research Institute with effect from 1 October 1985 following the retirement of Dr D. A. Robins. Dr Barry joined the Institute's Research Department in 1962, subsequently became Head of Publications and in 1975 was appointed Assistant Director with special responsibility for the network of Tin Information Centres. He thus has had long experience of all the Institute's functions and activities and his appointment at a time when links are being forged between ITRI and the Association of Tin Producing Countries will provide a smooth transition from the previous Director.

Abstract

ISHM (UK) presented a technical meeting on this topic on the 23rd October 1982 at the Cunard International Hotel, London. The meeting was attended by some 50 engineers, both those involved in the field of hybrids and potential users. It was generally felt that this was a useful meeting but more especially that it would have appealed to many potential users of hybrids, had the right people been able to be contacted.
