I am delighted to be here today to honor the work of Alan Rugman. Alain Verbeke (Calgary) and I will discuss Alan's contributions, with me focusing primarily on his contributions to the field of international business (IB); Alain, his contributions to international management (IM).

Looks at the importance of management in fire safety and the range of issues it covers. Covers organisation, procedures, structural provisions, maintenance, staff training, external contractors and tenants. Concludes that all provisions for fire safety ultimately depend on the quality of management.

We distinguish two factors through which new information technologies will affect office employment. On one hand, office automation will enhance productivity, meaning a given amount of work can be accomplished with less labor. On the other, office workload is apt to increase in response to enhanced information handling capabilities, implying demand for additional workers. The balancing of these two factors dictates office employment. An interactive Delphi forecast based on this two‐factor model predicts modest declines in office work required — a frightening prospect for a society also anticipating continuing declines in manufacturing and agricultural work requirements.

In this time of heightened regulatory attention to potential conflicts of interest and the transparency of transaction costs in buying and selling portfolio securities, soft dollar practices have come under intense scrutiny. Regulators are asking whether the use of soft dollars should be eliminated, while some in the investment management industry have begun to restrict their own practices or even voluntarily discontinue them. What should you be doing now? Should you be evaluating your soft dollar arrangements? Do you have effective soft dollar policies and procedures in place to maintain compliance with applicable regulatory requirements? Who are the primary beneficiaries of your soft dollar arrangements? This article outlines the background and regulatory considerations applicable to soft dollar arrangements, and discusses the issues money management firms should consider in reviewing their soft dollar practices.

BRITISH Aerospace (Commercial Aircraft) Airbus Division has announced a multi‐year partnership with Mentor Graphics' Context Division. The company selected Context's technical publishing and documentation management system for producing and revising maintenance documentation for Concorde, Airbus and BAC 1–11 aircraft.

NOW removed to Chaucer House, Malet Place, London, W.O., the Library Association is in its permanent home adjoining University College and the new National Central Library. Some strenuous work has yet to be done by the secretary and his staff before the ceremonial opening, but when Chaucer House is completed it should not only facilitate and permit the growth of the work of the Library Association; it should also form a meeting place of great value. We refer not only to meetings of a formal character, although room for these, for council and committee meetings and for examinations will, for the first time in our record, be adequate; we refer rather to the clubbable meetings that have hitherto been rather difficult. For many years librarians have advocated a professional club, where meals might be taken, friends might meet, and some of the social amenities generally be possible. There seems to be an opportunity here; but, clearly, no such club idea can be realized unless there is a definite desire for it, and, what is more, practical use made of it. If the London members dropped in regularly some catering scheme could be arranged which the provincial members could take advantage of too whenever they visited London. Can this be done? Other professions have managed it. It is merely sense to recognise that the provision of refreshments and other necessaries can only be made if there is a regular demand for them which will at least pay their cost.
