This paper aims to propose and assess a core set of environmental and operational sustainability indicators for airport benchmarking, based on research conducted for a decision support tool designed to support airport environmental and operational sustainability. Seeks to make recommendations on the external use of sustainability indicators in stakeholder communication, based on a separate survey of the way in which UK airports use environmental and sustainability benchmarking reports.

The indicators are designed to minimise additional data collection demands while reflecting sustainability theory to a practicable extent.

Bringing core environmental and operational indicators together helps to make their inter‐relationship explicit. The indicators are a minimum set, and their limitations with respect to sustainability are made explicit.

Reports on a survey of the current extent of, and approaches to, stakeholder communication undertaken by airports in the UK, particularly external use of environmental and sustainability benchmarking results.

This case highlights the challenges of obtaining “Green Organization” certification process of ICF Airports Antalya. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has initiated a Green Airport project in 2009. The aim of the project is to promote the systematic reduction and, where possible, elimination of the environmental impacts of airport operation. Organizations are required to establish, implement, document, and maintain an environmental management system (EMS) in accordance with the current version of the TS EN ISO 14001 EMS Standards. An annual Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report is required to be prepared in accordance with the TS EN ISO 14064-1 standard, and Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report must be verified by the TSE in accordance with TS EN ISO 14064-3 standard. When an organization meets these requirements, DGCA grants the organization a “Green Company” certificate, which allowed a 20% discount on the extension fee of authorization documents and licenses. Although ICF Airports Antalya faced several challenges, it was issued “Green Organization” certificate by the DGCA in 2010 and finally became 19th greenest airports in the world.

The aviation industry worldwide has a reputation for being a major polluter. This paper examines the ways in which airports address the issue of the environment through examining both the problems and the strategies adopted in disposal. The paper concludes that a more co‐ordinated approach to environmental strategy is needed across the industry and that this is best produced at government level.
