Case overview

What are the main problems faced by direct sellers in Mexico within a selling context based on social networking? This case has the objective to approach the difficulties direct sellers face in their operations in order to address potential bottlenecks inhibiting the flow of sales. In the present case, direct sellers expressed openly their personal views about the issues they generally had to deal with in order to survive in a highly competitive market, namely the market of cosmetic and beauty products. The decision of whether to implement changes to improve the flow of sells through the network created by direct sellers would eventually affect direct sellers performance given that they are the final appendix of the selling chain. This case helps to develop a direct seller typology for direct selling success. Accordingly, it highlights the importance of every element participating in a business. Summarizing, it strategically links direct sellers performance with the overall business performance.

Expected learning outcomes

The case contributes to the analysis of personality attributes of sellers and the elements affecting market penetration of cosmetic and beauty products. It is also interesting to observe how some foreign brands have become iconic in the local direct selling businesses. This case also contributes to developing tactical competition to strategic planning of marketing of direct selling in emerging markets. Particular learning objectives are as follows: analyse marketing planning from a perspective of decentralization and growth and explore creative possibilities for sustainable growth of this kind of business; stimulate strategic thinking concerning system operation and free bottle necks of selling channels by analysing the effect of system subordination of operations and training to upper levels of vendors; analyse the brand expansion process and loyalty development of customers in a competitive market of products that are sold in network.

Abstract

Theoretical basis

Change in culture brought about by effective leadership is at the core of this case. Therefore, two broad topics can be discussed using this case: organizational culture change and Change Leadership OR Role of leaders in organzational change.

Research methodology

The case was prepared using primary data collected through a series of interviews conducted with participants of the change process. The participants included R. Sivanesan, Senior Vice President (Quality, Sourcing and Supply Chain) of Ashok Leyland, many members of the quality team, production department, HR executives and members of the marketing team. Secondary data in the form of an interview of Mr Vinod Dasari published in a popular magazine Autocar Professionals and organizational documents/presentations used during the change process were also used to build the case.

Case overview/synopsis

In 2011, when Vinod Dasari took over as the Managing Director and CEO of Ashok Leyland (AL), he hired R. Sivanesan. The quality standards of the vehicles produced in the AL plants in 2011 was far from satisfactory. He decided to change this. Part A of the case discusses the challenges faced by Sivanesan and Vinod Dasari in bringing about a change in the quality management practices at AL. Part B discusses the steps they actually took and the change that resulted from it.

Learning objectives

At the end of the case discussion, the participants will be able to develop an understanding of the various aspects of organizational culture and how it manifests itself; become aware of the underlying causes of resistance to change; critically evaluate and apply various theories of change management; create an action plan for changing the culture of any organization; and appreciate the role of leaders as change agents.

Complexity academic level

The central theme in this case is managing culture change within organizations through effective leadership. Instructors teaching courses in organizational theory, organization structure/culture and leadership will find this case relevant. It is primarily intended for use in MBA and Executive Education programs in Management.

This case can be used in courses on strategic management for second year masters’ level management students (with a focus on strategic analysis of internet-based business models in India) and entrepreneurship (with a focus on business growth). The primary focus of the case is how an internet-based business model in the food industry took shape.

Study level/applicability

The case enumerates how strategic analysis can be performed to analyze the firm based on topics such as the analysis of the mission and vision of Holachef based on the Ashridge mission model, examining strategy with Mintzberg’s 5Ps of strategy, performing a PESTLE analysis of HolaChef, evaluating Holachef with Porter’s industry analysis, performing Value net analysis for Holachef, examining Holachef’s business with strategy group analysis, examining the roots of core competencies of Holachef and explaining Holachef’s resource and capabilities with the valuable, rare, inimitable, non-substitutable (VRIN) Framework.

Case overview

Saurabh Saxena and Anil Gelra co-founded Holachef, “a restaurant in cloud” in March 2014. In a city like Mumbai, there are many households where both partners work; this had led to difficulties for people finding time to prepare food at home. Holachef is an online delivery platform which aggregates chefs for home-like multiple cuisine preparation. Holachef’s vision is to satisfy the need for homemade healthy food. The three pillars of Holachef to provide such food are technology (orders are taken through a website, mobile application and phone calls), food (enlisted chefs on the website) and logistics. The food prepared by chefs is assembled at different distribution centres and routed to customers. The efficient logistics and storage system maintain the quality of food. These pillars help Holachef to serve customers with efficiency at affordable prices.

Expected learning outcomes

Performing strategic analysis from both an industrial organization theory and resource-based view (RBV) perspective with VRIN framework. This is in the context of online business models in a digitizing India. Entrepreneurial strategy concepts and challenges faced by entrepreneurs in an online business.

Abstract

This case is designed to teach how to structure information technology (IT) infrastructure outsourcing deals from both the outsourcer and the client perspective. Office Supply Incorporated (OSI) is a company in crisis, with challenges in its cost structure and poor IT performance. Outsourcing to Technology Infrastructure Solutions is an opportunity to both reduce costs and complexity for the firm, but students first must consider whether outsourcing is a good strategic fit for OSI. Detailed spreadsheet templates are given that are based on a real outsourcing client engagement for a major infrastructure outsourcing company. The spreadsheets are complex but have been simplified so that they automatically calculate when populated, allowing the students to quickly move to answering the management challenge: how should TIS price and structure the outsourcing deal? Answering this question provides deep insights into the business case for IT outsourcing and how outsourcers financially engineer a deal structure to ensure a win-win outcome for both the client and outsource service provider.

Students will: Understand the strategic context of IT outsourcing and when it will benefit a firm; Understand IT infrastructure outsourcing and management issues such as personnel reductions and organizational change; Learn which outsourcing pricing model is the best fit for a project; Create a rigorous cost-benefit financial analysis and ROI model for IT infrastructure outsourcing; Analyze the model and learn how to financially engineer the deal to be a win-win for the outsourcer and client.

Abstract

Teuer Furniture is a privately owned, moderately sized chain of upscale home furnishing showrooms in the United States. The firm survived the economic recession and by the end of 2012, it has regained its financial footing. Now that the firm is more secure financially, some of its long-term investors have asked to cash out their investments. This will be the first time that Teuer has repurchased its equity; the company has paid dividends since 2009. Chief financial officer Jennifer Jerabek and her team have been given the task of valuing Teuer using a discounted cash flow approach. The discount rate is given in the case, and the students need to build a pro forma income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement and then calculate a per-share value for Teuer.

The inadequate governance of the bank has been responsible for some of the major lapses. Mr. Arun Kaul took strategic initiatives and systematically strengthened the functioning of the board. It enabled the bank to turnaround and report profits in challenging economic conditions. The Bank is not yet completely safe and probably need strengthening of its competencies to emerging challenges.

The case “Evaluating Business Value of IT Requirements” addresses a software/information technology (IT) project management concern of assessing value of specified project requirements upfront.

Study level/applicability

This newly designed case is suitable for the students of an undergraduate programme, an MBA programme and practitioners. Assignment questions are designed from the perspective of teaching this case to a business student audience. The case is ideally suited for the IT strategy course where approaches to identifying business value of software investments are discussed.

Case overview

Set in November 2011, the case begins with the dilemmas facing Mr Suneel as he tries to come up with an approach that could facilitate evaluation of business value of software at a relatively early stage of its development. Based on a review of available literary sources, he proposed a six-step approach that incorporates responses of both the project representatives and business representatives. The final result is a quantitative representation of business value that is expected to facilitate both the business and the project organisation to finalise on software features that contribute significantly in realising the intended business objectives.

Expected learning outcomes

To introduce the concept of business value and its associated dimensions; to introduce the concept of project scenarios and its constituents; to highlight the benefits of an early assessment of the business value; and to demonstrate how one can link software requirements to business value and the difficulties associated with the estimation process.
