Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to describe the success story of a software company, Adobe, in redesigning the workplace environment from cubicles to a connected collaborative workplace, which helped the organization optimize workplace usage. The goals were to design an innovative work environment to optimize the usage of the office portfolio, improve workplace service quality and infrastructure facilities of the portfolio, increase employee productivity, reduce technology costs, engage employees in a better way to enhance employee satisfaction, align workplace design with the brand, mobilize technology and enable a globalized workforce to facilitate higher productivity.

Design/methodology/approach

An exploratory research design method was adopted using the purposive sampling technique to collect data through semi-structured interviews with a team of nine property professionals from the operations team responsible for workspace redesign at Adobe in India.

Findings

The main observations of the corporate real estate (CRE) manager were on what value parameters drive workplace redesign and how different software companies were creating strategies to manage workplace design or redesign change for optimal use of the organization portfolio. To discuss the CRE strategies of global software leaders, IBM and SAP were pointed out in this case.

Research limitations/implications

The number of interviews were limited. The related parameters for workplace transformation are not necessarily complete. However, the parameters are regarded to include the most important aspects of workplace redesign.

Practical implications

This study provides useful insights into how benchmarking in the workplace transformation function of the CRE industry can be applied to address portfolio-related challenges, divergent employee needs and improve workspace usability following energy-efficient policies. Practitioners can use this study as a guide to develop more effective workspace designs.

Social implications

This study may guide other firms on successful workspace design initiatives that may overcome many obstacles in the workplace transformation process to have their intended impact on workplace efficiency and employee satisfaction. The case can be used as an inspiration for developing specific user-focused innovative workspace design in practice.

Originality/value

Adopting the theoretical background of the person–environment fit theory, this study adds to the understanding of the operational model of a digitally connected workspace designed as per real estate needs and strategies to manage the CRE portfolio of the company.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a method to predict the situation of a loaded element in the compressive stress curve to prevent failure of crucial elements in load-bearing masonry walls and to propose a material model to simulate a compressive element successfully in Abaqus software to study the structural safety by using non-linear finite element analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

A Weibull distribution function was rewritten to relate between failure probability function and axial strain during uniaxial compressive loading. Weibull distribution parameters (shape and scale parameters) were defined by detected acoustic emission (AE) events with a linear regression. It was shown that the shape parameter of Weibull distribution was able to illustrate the effects of the added fibers on increasing or decreasing the specimens’ brittleness. Since both Weibull function and compressive stress are functions of compressive strain, a relation between compressive stress and normalized cumulative AE hits was calculated when the compressive strain was available. By suggested procedures, it was possible to monitor pretested plain or random distributed short fibers reinforced adobe elements (with AE sensor and strain detector) in a masonry building under uniaxial compression loading to predict the situation of element in the compressive stress‒strain curve, hence predicting the time to element collapse by an AE sensor and a strain detector. In the predicted compressive stress‒strain curve, the peak stress and its corresponding strain, the stress and strain point with maximum elastic modulus and the maximum elastic modulus were predicted successfully. With a proposed material model, it was illustrated that the needed parameters for simulating a specimen in Abaqus software with concrete damage plasticity were peak stress and its corresponding strain, the stress and strain point with maximum elastic modulus and the maximum elastic modulus.

Findings

The AE cumulative hits versus strain plots corresponding to the stress‒strain curves can be divided into four stages: inactivity period, discontinuous growth period, continuous growth period and constant period, which can predict the densifying, linear, non-linear and residual stress part of the stress‒strain relationship. By supposing that the relation between cumulative AE hits and compressive strain complies with a Weibull distribution function, a linear analysis was conducted to calibrate the parameters of Weibull distribution by AE cumulative hits for predicting the failure probability as a function of compressive strain. Parameters of m and θ were able to predict the brittleness of the plain and tire fibers reinforced adobe elements successfully. The calibrated failure probability function showed sufficient representation of the cumulative AE hit curve. A mathematical model for the stress–strain relationship prediction of the specimens after detecting the first AE hit was developed by the relationship between compressive stress versus the Weibull failure probability function, which was validated against the experimental data and gave good predictions for both plain and short fibers reinforced adobe specimens. Then, the authors were able to monitor and predict the situation of an element in the compressive stress‒strain curve, hence predicting the time to its collapse for pretested plain or random distributed short fibers reinforced adobe (with AE sensor and strain detector) in a masonry building under uniaxial compression loading by an AE sensor and a strain detector. The proposed model was successfully able to predict the main mechanical properties of different adobe specimens which are necessary for material modeling with concrete damage plasticity in Abaqus. These properties include peak compressive strength and its corresponding axial strain, the compressive strength and its corresponding axial strain at the point with maximum compressive Young’s modulus and the maximum compressive Young’s modulus.

Research limitations/implications

The authors were not able to decide about the effects of the specimens’ shape, as only cubic specimens were chosen; by testing different shape and different size specimens, the authors would be able to generalize the results.

Practical implications

The paper includes implications for monitoring techniques and predicting the time to the collapse of pretested elements (with AE sensor and strain detector) in a masonry structure.

Originality/value

This paper proposes a new method to monitor and predict the situation of a loaded element in the compressive stress‒strain curve, hence predicting the time to its collapse for pretested plain or random distributed short fibers reinforced adobe (with AE sensor and strain detector) in a masonry building under uniaxial compression load by an AE sensor and a strain detector.

Abstract

Purpose

Earthen construction does not meet today’s requirements due to certain limitations such as low water resistance and its high vulnerability to cracking damage. The purpose of this study is to improve the mechanical properties and low durability of adobe blocks by incorporating date palm wastes as a natural reinforcement and lime as a stabilizer.

Design/methodology/approach

Soil from the region of Biskra in Algeria was mixed with sand and lime in suitable ratios. Then, date palm wastes were added to the previous mixture at different ratios (0.3%, 0.6% and 0.9%) by dry mix weight to manufacture adobes. Cubical and cylindrical specimens were prepared and tested in a laboratory to investigate the curing time, mechanical and durability characteristics of the formulated blocks. In addition, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) tests were used to identify the materials.

Findings

It has been observed that the addition of lime to the soil is very beneficial for its stabilization, in particular for an optimum of 12%. The presence of date palm waste in the mixture (soil + lime) generated a significant improvement in tensile strength reaching a rate of about 67%. The same observation was made for the tests of resistance to dry abrasion, resistance to erosion, attack by external sulphate and wetting/drying. However, for cases of compressive strength, water absorption and swelling an unfavorable effect was recorded.

Originality/value

Based on the above-mentioned findings, this paper presents a novel solution to increase the durability of adobe materials using date palm wastes with oven curing at 65°C for about nine days. Adopting such an approach would certainly encourage building durable mud housing on a large scale. This can contribute to solving the acute housing shortage, particularly in poor countries.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze a successful sustainability program run by an owner that has invested $23 million, received rebates of $10 million, accrued over $9 million of savings and has won top scores in LEED and Energy Star. Other owners planning to invest in energy conservation and sustainability can apply the lessons learnt to overcome common barriers.

Design/methodology/approach

This case study is based on project information supplied by the owner and structured interviews with the operational team. The projects are analyzed based on drivers and payback characteristics. Finally, the case study puts Adobe Systems' results within the context of the industry by matching it to the challenges identified in other reports.

Findings

The results show that 40 percent of projects are initiated by operation management personnel. The projects with the biggest savings are supported by third-party incentives. Only 10 percent of projects are evaluated by simulation and account for 12 percent of annual savings. Energy Star plays a crucial role for benchmarking performance and should be run annually. LEED EB is valuable when expending conservation efforts beyond energy aspects to sustainability. Performance benchmarking is a crucial step to determine the potential and priority of energy improvements.

Research limitations/implications

The findings are based on the three towers in San Jose, California.

Practical implications

Building owners can incorporate the methodologies applied to evaluate these successful projects into their buildings. Facility managers can leverage the findings to present the advantages of recertification and commissioning.

Originality/value

A detailed project analysis, from a leader in practice, shows the importance of the local building operations team in sustainability and energy conservation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to is to describe vector graphics for web lectures, focusing on the experiences with Adobe Flash 9 and SVG.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper presents experiences made during the development and everyday use of two versions of the lecture‐recording system virtPresenter. The first of these versions is based on SVG, while the second is based on Adobe Flex2 (Flash 9) technology. The paper points out the advantages vector graphics can bring for web lectures and briefly presents a hypermedia navigation interface for web lectures that is based on SVG. The paper also compares the formats Flash and SVG and concludes with describing changes in workflows for administrators and users that have become possible with Flash.

Findings

Vector graphics are an ideal content format for slide‐based lecture recordings. File sizes can be kept small and graphics can be displayed in superior quality. Information about text and slide objects is stored symbolically, which allows texts to be searched and objects on slides to be used interactively, for example, for navigation purposes. The use of vector graphics for web lectures is, however, a trend that has begun only recently. A major reason for this is that multiple media formats have to be combined in order to replay video and slides.

Originality/value

The paper offers in insight into vector graphics as an ideal content format for slide‐based lecture recordings.

Abstract

Purpose

Changes in file format specifications challenge long-term preservation of digital documents. Digital archives thus often focus on specific file formats that are well suited for long-term preservation, such as the PDF/A format. Since only few customers submit PDF/A files, digital archives may consider converting submitted files to the PDF/A format. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors evaluated three software tools for batch conversion of common file formats to PDF/A-1b: LuraTech PDF Compressor, Adobe Acrobat XI Pro and 3-HeightsTM Document Converter by PDF Tools. The test set consisted of 80 files, with 10 files each of the eight file types JPEG, MS PowerPoint, PDF, PNG, MS Word, MS Excel, MSG and “web page.”

Findings

Batch processing was sometimes hindered by stops that required manual interference. Depending on the software tool, three to four of these stops occurred during batch processing of the 80 test files. Furthermore, the conversion tools sometimes failed to produce output files even for supported file formats: three (Adobe Pro) up to seven (LuraTech and 3-HeightsTM) PDF/A-1b files were not produced. Since Adobe Pro does not convert e-mails, a total of 213 PDF/A-1b files were produced. The faithfulness of each conversion was investigated by comparing the visual appearance of the input document with that of the produced PDF/A-1b document on a computer screen. Meticulous visual inspection revealed that the conversion to PDF/A-1b impaired the information content in 24 of the converted 213 files (11 percent). These reproducibility errors included loss of links, loss of other document content (unreadable characters, missing text, document part missing), updated fields (reflecting time and folder of conversion), vector graphics issues and spelling errors.

Originality/value

These results indicate that large-scale batch conversions of heterogeneous files to PDF/A-1b cause complex issues that need to be addressed for each individual file. Even with considerable efforts, some information loss seems unavoidable if large numbers of files from heterogeneous sources are migrated to the PDF/A-1b format.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide librarians with an alternative method to capture assessment from information literacy tutorials and produce reporting without the need of conventional learning management systems (LMS).

Design/methodology/approach

This study captures the procedure by which Monmouth University Library used its Association of College and Research Libraries Peer‐reviewed Instructional Materials Online (ACRL PRIMO)‐awarded plagiarism prevention tutorial to assess Adobe Connect's ability to function as a library‐based, librarian friendly LMS.

Findings

Both Adobe Captivate and Connect are effective tools that produce and report high quality data which can be shared with academic departments to build strong relationships and further information literacy initiatives. Adobe Captivate tutorials are easily developed and highly customizable; librarians can modify their work and publish updated learning tutorials instantaneously without LMS administrator involvement due to Adobe Connect's ability to function as an LMS.

Research limitations/implications

Although this study is limited to data captured from 1,600 users of the library's plagiarism prevention tutorial, it suggests that success may be reproduced with any online information literacy effort where assessment is required.

Practical implications

Practical implications consider how small college libraries can capture assessment without assistance from information technology departments.

Social implications

This work helps students avoid plagiarism, a serious epidemic in college libraries.

Originality/value

This review introduces alternative ways in which assessment and reporting may be achieved without conventional LMS.

Electronic reserves help registered campus users who need anytime‐access to documents. Electronic reserves comprise digital files, mostly HTML or PDF formats. In some circumstances the HTML or PDF file is “readable” to the sighted individual, but are sometimes either partially or completely unreadable to the visually impaired using assistive technology. Creating “accessible” PDF files poses more challenges than creating “accessible” HTML files. Several options are suggested to help solve this problem.
