Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose an improved and computationally efficient motion simulation of a flexible variable sweep aircraft.

Design/methodology/approach

The motion simulation is performed on hardware-in-the-loop simulation setup using 6 degree-of-freedom motion platform. The dynamic model of a flexible variable sweep aircraft, Rockwell B-1 Lancer is presented using equations of motions for combined rigid and flexible motions. The peak filter is introduced as a new method to separate flexible motion from aircraft motion data. Standard adaptive washout filter is modified and redesigned for an accurate flexible aircraft flight simulation. The flight data are generated using FlightGear software. Another motion profile with significant oscillations is also tested. The peak filter and the modified adaptive washout filter both are used to process the data according to the motion envelop of motion platform.

Findings

The performance of the modified adaptive washout filter is evaluated using hardware-in-the-loop simulation setup and results are compared with the standard adaptive washout filter. Results exhibit that the proposed method is computationally cost-effective and improves the motion simulation of flexible aircraft with close to realistic motion cues.

Originality/value

The proposed work presents motion simulation of a flexible aircraft by introducing a peak filter to extract flexible motion in contrast to the traditional motion separation methods. Also, a modified adaptive washout filter is designed and implemented in place of the traditional washout filters for improved flexible aircraft flight motion simulation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose an optimal predictive model for the short-term forecast of real-time non-stationary machine variables by combining time series prediction with adaptive algorithms to minimize the error and to improve the prediction accuracy.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed model is applied for prediction of speed and controller set point of three-phase induction motor operating on closed loop speed control with AC drive and PI controller. At Stage 1, the trend of the machine variables has been extracted and added to auto-regressive moving average (ARMA) time series prediction. ARMA prediction has been carried out using different combinations of AR and MA methods in order to make prediction with less Mean Squared Error (MSE).

Findings

The prediction error indicates the inadequacy of the model to estimate the data characteristics, which has been resolved at the subsequent stage by cascading an adaptive least mean square finite impulse response filter to the time series model. The adaptive filter receives the predicted output including training data and iteratively adjusts its coefficients for zero error convergence.

Research limitations/implications

The componentized data prediction based on time series and cascade adaptive filter algorithm decomposes the non-stationary data characteristics for predictive maintenance. Evaluation of the model with different combination of time series algorithms and parameter settings of adaptive filter has been carried out to illustrate the performance of the prediction model. This prediction accuracy is compared with existing linear adaptive filter prediction using MSE as comparison index. The wide margin in the MSE values substantiates the prediction efficiency of the proposed model for machine data.

Originality/value

This model predicts the dynamic machine data with component decomposition at high accuracy, which enables to interpret the system response under dynamic conditions efficiently.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to estimate aerodynamic parameters accurately from flight data in the presence of unknown noise characteristics.

Design/methodology/approach

The introduced adaptive filter scheme is composed of two parallel UKFs. At every time‐step, the master UKF estimates the states and parameters using the noise covariance obtained by the slave UKF, while the slave UKF estimates the noise covariance using the innovations generated by the master UKF. This real time innovation‐based adaptive unscented Kalman filter (UKF) is used to estimate aerodynamic parameters of aircraft in uncertain environment where noise characteristics are drastically changing.

Findings

The investigations are initially made on simulated flight data with moderate to high level of process noise and it is shown that all the aerodynamic parameter estimates are accurate. Results are analyzed based on Monte Carlo simulation with 4000 realizations. The efficacy of adaptive UKF in comparison with the other standard Kalman filters on the estimation of accurate flight stability and control derivatives from flight test data in the presence of noise, are also evaluated. It is found that adaptive UKF successfully attains better aerodynamic parameter estimation under the same condition of process noise intensity changes.

Research limitations/implications

The presence of process noise complicates parameter estimation severely. Since the non‐measurable process noise makes the system stochastic, consequently, it requires a suitable state estimator to propagate the states for online estimation of aircraft aerodynamic parameters from flight data.

Originality/value

This is the first paper highlighting the process noise intensity change on real time estimation of flight stability and control parameters using adaptive unscented Kalman filter.

Abstract

Purpose

The successful use of the standard extended Kalman filter (EKF) is restricted by the requirement on the statistics information of the measurement noise. The covariance of the measurement noise may deviate from its nominal value in practical environment, and the filtering performance may decline because of the statistical uncertainty. Although the adaptive EKF (AEKF) is available for recursive covariance estimation, it is often less accurate than the EKF with accurate noise statistics.

Design/methodology/approach

Aiming at this problem, this paper develops a parallel adaptive EKF (PAEKF) by combining the EKF and the AEKF with an adaptive law, such that the final state estimate is dominated by the EKF when the prior noise covariance is accurate, while the AEKF is activated when the actual noise covariance deviates from its nominal value.

Findings

The PAEKF can reduce the sensitivity of the algorithm to the model uncertainty and ensure the estimation accuracy in the normal case. The simulation results demonstrate that the PAEKF has the advantage of both the AEKF and the EKF.

Practical implications

The presented algorithm is applicable for spacecraft relative attitude and position estimation.

Originality/value

The PAEKF is presented for a kind of nonlinear uncertain systems. Stability analysis is provided to show that the error of the estimator is bounded under certain assumptions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to relate to the real-time navigation and tracking of pedestrians in a closed environment. To restrain accumulated error of low-cost microelectromechanical system inertial navigation system and adapt to the real-time navigation of pedestrians at different speeds, the authors proposed an improved inertial navigation system (INS)/pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR)/ultra wideband (UWB) integrated positioning method for indoor foot-mounted pedestrians.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper proposes a self-adaptive integrated positioning algorithm that can recognize multi-gait and realize a high accurate pedestrian multi-gait indoor positioning. First, the corresponding gait method is used to detect different gaits of pedestrians at different velocities; second, the INS/PDR/UWB integrated system is used to get the positioning information. Thus, the INS/UWB integrated system is used when the pedestrian moves at normal speed; the PDR/UWB integrated system is used when the pedestrian moves at rapid speed. Finally, the adaptive Kalman filter correction method is adopted to modify system errors and improve the positioning performance of integrated system.

Findings

The algorithm presented in this paper improves performance of indoor pedestrian integrated positioning system from three aspects: in the view of different pedestrian gaits at different speeds, the zero velocity detection and stride frequency detection are adopted on the integrated positioning system. Further, the accuracy of inertial positioning systems can be improved; the attitude fusion filter is used to obtain the optimal quaternion and improve the accuracy of INS positioning system and PDR positioning system; because of the errors of adaptive integrated positioning system, the adaptive filter is proposed to correct errors and improve integrated positioning accuracy and stability. The adaptive filtering algorithm can effectively restrain the divergence problem caused by outliers. Compared to the KF algorithm, AKF algorithm can better improve the fault tolerance and precision of integrated positioning system.

Originality/value

The INS/PDR/UWB integrated system is built to track pedestrian position and attitude. Finally, an adaptive Kalman filter is used to improve the accuracy and stability of integrated positioning system.

Abstract

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are periodically collecting data through randomly dispersed sensors (motes), which typically consume high energy in radio communication that mainly leans on data transmission within the network. Furthermore, dissemination mode in WSN usually produces noisy values, incorrect measurements or missing information that affect the behaviour of WSN. In this article, a Distributed Data Predictive Model (DDPM) was proposed to extend the network lifetime by decreasing the consumption in the energy of sensor nodes. It was built upon a distributive clustering model for predicting dissemination-faults in WSN. The proposed model was developed using Recursive least squares (RLS) adaptive filter integrated with a Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter, for removing unwanted reflections and noise accompanying of the transferred signals among the sensors, aiming to minimize the size of transferred data for providing energy efficient. The experimental results demonstrated that DDPM reduced the rate of data transmission to ∼20%. Also, it decreased the energy consumption to 95% throughout the dataset sample and upgraded the performance of the sensory network by about 19.5%. Thus, it prolonged the lifetime of the network.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the effect of unknown noise parameters of Kalman filter on velocity and displacement and to enhance the measured accuracy using adaptive Kalman filter with particle swarm optimization algorithm.

Design/methodology/approach

A novel method based on adaptive Kalman filter is proposed. Combined with the displacement measurement model, the standard Kalman filtering algorithm is established. The particle swarm optimization algorithm fused with Kalman is used to obtain the optimal noise parameter estimation using different fitness function.

Findings

The simulations and experimental results show that the adaptive Kalman filter algorithm fused with particle swarm optimization can improve the accuracy of the velocity and displacement.

Originality/value

The adaptive Kalman filter algorithm fused with particle swarm optimization can serve as a new method for optimal state estimation of moving target.

Abstract

Purpose

Adaptive equalization plays an important role in digital communication to reduce the distortions due to inter-symbol interference. An adaptive filter is used as an equalizer model in channel equalization. An adaptive algorithm is the heart of the adaptive filter which finds the optimum coefficients of the filter. The choice of the adaptive algorithm improves the convergence rate and minimizes the mean square error (MSE). This paper aims to propose a cat swarm optimization (CSO)-based adaptive algorithm and its modification to improve the performance of a channel equalizer.

Design/methodology/approach

The input digital training data are transmitted through different channel conditions. A linear transversal filter is used as a channel and equalizer model. The equalizer coefficients are trained by the proposed simplified cat swarm optimization (SCSO) algorithm to find the estimated digital training data.

Findings

The performance of the proposed SCSO algorithm is compared with particle swarm optimization (PSO)-based channel equalization. The improvement in convergence rate and MSE is verified under linear and nonlinear channel conditions with different delay spreads. The optimum parameters of the SCSO are found using simulation-based sensitivity analysis.

Originality/value

This paper analyzes a CSO algorithm for adaptive channel equalization and proposes a SCSO algorithm to identify the optimum coefficients of a transversal equalizer. The seeking mode process is simplified in the proposed SCSO to achieve better performance in channel equalization. The proposed SCSO algorithm guarantees minimum MSE in all independent runs, whereas in PSO, few misses are possible.

Abstract

Purpose

One of the fundamental tasks in the field of image processing is image denoising. Images are often corrupted by different types of noise and the restoration of images degraded with random-valued impulse noise is still a challenging task. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents an adaptive threshold-based impulse noise detection following by a novel selective window median filter for restoration of RVIN pixels.

Findings

The proposed method emphasis a local image statistics using an exponential nonlinear function with an adaptive threshold is derived from the rank-ordered trimmed median absolute difference (ROTMAD) are deliberated to detect the noisy pixels. In the filtering stage, a selective 3×3 moving window median filter is applied to restore the detected noisy pixel.

Originality/value

Experimental result shows that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing state-of-art techniques in terms of noise removal and quantitative metrics such as peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR), mean absolute error (MAE), structural similarity index metric (SSIM) and miss and false detection rate.

Abstract

Purpose

An accurate detection of overhead ground wire under open surroundings with varying illumination is the premise of reliable line grasping with the off-line arm when the inspection robot cross obstacle automatically. This paper aims to propose an improved approach which is called adaptive homomorphic filter and supervised learning (AHSL) for overhead ground wire detection.

Design/methodology/approach

First, to decrease the influence of the varying illumination caused by the open work environment of the inspection robot, the adaptive homomorphic filter is introduced to compensation the changing illumination. Second, to represent ground wire more effectively and to extract more powerful and discriminative information for building a binary classifier, the global and local features fusion method followed by supervised learning method support vector machine is proposed.

Findings

Experiment results on two self-built testing data sets A and B which contain relative older ground wires and relative newer ground wire and on the field ground wires show that the use of the adaptive homomorphic filter and global and local feature fusion method can improve the detection accuracy of the ground wire effectively. The result of the proposed method lays a solid foundation for inspection robot grasping the ground wire by visual servo.

Originality/value

This method AHSL has achieved 80.8 per cent detection accuracy on data set A which contains relative older ground wires and 85.3 per cent detection accuracy on data set B which contains relative newer ground wires, and the field experiment shows that the robot can detect the ground wire accurately. The performance achieved by proposed method is the state of the art under open environment with varying illumination.
