Abstract
Purpose
This editorial seeks to compare the German Bibliothekartag, the American Library Association Annual Meeting, and the International Federation of Library Associations meeting.
Design/methodology/approach
The method relies mainly on anthropological observation.
Findings
Conferences in cities with public transit, good restaurants, and decent technology, including wireless internet and projection in the meeting rooms, offer better opportunities for the social bonding that encourages repeat attendance.
Practical implications
Conferences at locations without these features risk losing regulars as technology increasingly enables communication without travel.
Originality/value
Interaction with the conference environment is not the only factor in making a conference experience successful but, without positive interactions, the option of doing business electronically becomes far more attractive.

Abstract
Attending professional conferences can be exciting, expensive, time consuming, frustrating, rewarding—and sometimes all of these. Inflation, combined with ever‐tightening travel restrictions in the 1980s, forces many of us to justify fully the time and money spent for professional activities. Conferences, particularly the ALA Annual Convention, can and should be one of the most cost‐effective and professionally rewarding experiences available. It's an ideal way to combine several functions and lessen the cost of each, particularly for those of us interested in building library collections.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to describe the causes, nature, extent and effect of the influence of the American Library Association (ALA) on the development of modern Chinese librarianship from 1924 to 1949. This study was based primarily on documents located in the ALA archives, which houses the documents of the International Relations Committee of ALA. It was found that library development changed in China during the period by borrowing from American librarianship as conveyed by the ALA, largely as a consequence of the following: American library advisors or educators, such as Arthur E. Bostwick, Charles H. Brown and Charles B. Shaw, conducting surveys of libraries in China; an American library and/or a library school in China; projects for the encouragement of public libraries; fellowships granted to Chinese librarians for study in the USA; the establishment and operation of the CLA; and the Book Program to strengthen library collections during the time of the China‐Japan War.

Abstract
THERE MUST BE something in the Welsh air which affects resolutions of the Council on finance, especially subscriptions — increased subscriptions in particular. In 1953, when the conference was last held in Llandudno, it was Professor Irwin who got hot under the collar—this year it was Mr. Hutchings who had to tie up the loose ends.

Abstract
Sarah Long’s Sister Library Program began as an initiative of her American Library Association Presidency and continues as a project of the American Library Association’s International Relations Round Table. This article describes components of the ALA Presidential project and activities of model Sister Library relationships. It summarizes the results of a program at the IFLA Conference in Jerusalem in August 2000 that presented perspectives from various programs for global library pairings and reviewed what has been learned over the past few years about global partnerships.
