Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this study is to explore students' expectations and perceived effectiveness of computer-assisted review tools, and the differences in reliability and validity between human evaluation and automatic evaluation, to find a way to improve students' English writing ability.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the expectancy disconfirmation theory (EDT) and Intelligent Computer-Assisted Language Learning (ICALL) theory, an experiment is conducted through the observation method, semistructured interview method and questionnaire survey method. In the experiment, respondents were asked to write and submit four essays on three online automated essay evaluation (AEE) systems in total, one essay every two weeks. Also, two teacher raters were invited to score the first and last papers of each student. The respondents' feedbacks were investigated to confirm the effectiveness of the AEE system; the evaluation results of the AEE systems and teachers were compared; descriptive statistics was used to analyze the experimental data.

Findings

The experiment revealed that the respondents held high expectations for the computer-assisted evaluation tools, and the effectiveness of computer scoring feedback on students was higher than that of teacher scoring feedback. Moreover, at the end of the writing project, the students' independent learning ability and English writing ability were significantly improved. Besides, there was a positive correlation between students' initial expectations of computer-assisted learning tools and the final evaluation of learning results.

Originality/value

The innovation lies in the use of observation methods, questionnaire survey methods, data analysis, and other methods for the experiment, and the combination of deep learning theory, EDT and descriptive statistics, which has particular reference value for future works.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to determine the materials used in Masters' theses of the Agricultural Economics and Extension Department (AEE), FUTA during the period of 2005‐2009 with the aim of improving the existing collection development available for the students.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employed descriptive research design. Theses submitted for the award of M.Tech degree between 2005 and 2009 at the department of AEE, FUTA were examined. This was checked against the record of AEE (M.Tech) graduands obtained from the School of Postgraduate Studies. The population of the study was all the theses submitted during the periods under study. Data were extracted from title pages and reference lists. Extracted data were analysed using descriptive statistics.

Findings

It was found that journals were more consulted compared to other sources of information materials. AEE M.Tech students do not take much advantage of resources available on the web and internet. It was also revealed that highest citation was recorded in 2006, while 30.52 per cent of materials cited were 20 years old and above. In addition, more than half of the cited materials were contributed by single authors and foreign journals were more cited with 72 per cent than local journals with 28 per cent. Moreover, Journal of Agriculture Economics was found to be the most cited journal followed by Journal of Econometrics.

Originality/value

The paper highlights the information materials available and used by Master students of the Agricultural Economics and Extension Department for their research work and those which need to be added for a healthy collection.

In the phase of the developed market economy we are currently in, the evaluation of each human activity, including scientific work, which is based on an evaluation of the value of the profit it brings. Unfortunately, it does not always work correctly.

Findings

The problem will be analyzed using as an example the erroneous (according to the author) use of fractional derivatives in electrical engineering.

To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the author's original point of view on the problem of improper use of fractional derivatives in electrical engineering.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the impact of Australian Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) as board insiders on firm performance and earnings quality with reference to agency theory and theory of friendly board.

Design/methodology/approach

The ordinary least square, two-stage least-squares and propensity score matching regressions are performed with various proxies for firm performance and accruals quality.

Findings

Firms with CFOs as board insiders experience significantly lower firm performance and earnings quality. In firms with powerful CEOs, the negative impact of CFO board membership on earnings quality is further magnified. Additionally, the negative impact of CFO board membership on firm values and earnings quality is only present in firms with bigger boards or firms with less outside directors. The findings are consistent with the agency perspective and in sharp contrast to the US market.

Originality/value

This is the first Australian study to examine the impact of CFO board membership on firm performance and earnings quality. The findings suggest that the monitoring of executives is best done by a small or independent board and that the insider board membership should be optimised.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a pedagogical practice in the project-based assessment of architectural, engineering and construction (AEC) students’ interdisciplinary building design work adopting BIM. This pedagogical practice emphasizes the impacts of BIM, as the digital collaboration platform, on the cross-disciplinary teamwork design through information sharing. This study also focuses on collecting students’ perceptions of building information modeling (BIM) effects in integrated project design. Challenges in BIM adoption from AEC students’ perspective were identified and discussed, and could spark further research needs.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on a thorough review of previous pedagogical practices of applying BIM in multiple AEC disciplines, this study adopted a case study of the Solar Decathlon (SD) residential building design as the group project for AEC students to deliver the design work and construction planning. In total 13 different teams within the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, each group consisting of final year undergraduate students with backgrounds in architecture, civil engineering, and architectural environmental engineering, worked to deliver the detailed design of the solar-powered residential house meeting pre-specified project objectives in terms of architectural esthetics, structural integrity, energy efficiency, prefabrication construction techniques and other issues such as budget and scheduling. Each team presented the cross-disciplinary design plan with cost estimate and construction scheduling together within group reports. This pedagogical study collected students’ reflective thinking on how BIM affected their design work, and compared their feedback on BIM to that from AEC industry professionals in previous studies.

Findings

The case study of the SD building project showed the capacity of BIM in enabling interdisciplinary collaboration through information exchange and in enhancing communication across different AEC fields. More sustainable design options were considered in the early architectural design stages through the cross-disciplinary cooperation between architecture and building services engineering. BIM motivated AEC student teams to have a more comprehensive design and construction plan by considering multiple criteria including energy efficiency, budget, and construction activities. Students’ reflections indicated both positive effects of BIM (e.g. facilitating information sharing) as well as challenges for further BIM implementation, for example, such as some architecture students’ resistance to BIM, and the lack of existing family types in the BIM library, etc.

Research limitations/implications

Some limitations of the current BIM pedagogy were identified through the student group work. For example, students revealed the problem of interoperability between BIM (i.e. Autodesk Revit) and building energy simulation tools. To further integrate the university education and AEC industry practice, future BIM pedagogical work could recruit professionals and project stakeholders in the adopted case studies, for the purpose of providing professional advice on improving the constructability of the BIM-based design from student work.

Originality/value

This work provides insights into the information technology applied in the AEC interdisciplinary pedagogy. Students gained the experience of a project-based collaboration and were equipped with BIM capabilities for future employment within the AEC job market. The integrated design approach was embedded throughout the team project process. Overall, this BIM pedagogical practice emphasized the link between academic activities and real-world industrial practice. The pedagogical experience gained in this BIM course could be expanded to future BIM education and research in other themes such as interoperability of building information exchange among different digital tools.

According to Gordon & Yukl (2004), because of constantly changing environments, it is important to continue research in the leadership and leadership effectiveness fields, especially when it comes to leadership in academia. Using Seiler and Pfister’s (2009) Dynamic Five-Factor Model of Leadership as the theoretical frame, a qualitative study of leadership effectiveness influencers of Agricultural and Extension Education department heads was completed. Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to clarify the relationship between energy flexibility and building components and technologies. It determines the energy flexibility potential of buildings in relation to their physical characteristics and heat supply systems with respect to external boundary conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

The emphasis of the evaluation is based on the timing and the amount of shiftable and storable thermal loads in buildings under defined indoor thermal comfort conditions. Dynamic building simulation is used to evaluate the potential of selected building characteristics to shift heating loads away from peak demand periods. Insights on the energy flexibility potential of individual technologies are gained by examining the thermal behaviour of single-zone simulation models as different input parameters are varied. For this purpose, parameters such as envelope qualities, construction materials, control systems for heating are modified.

Findings

The paper provides a comprehensive understanding of the influence of the different building parameters and their variations on their energy shifting potential under “laboratory conditions” with steady boundaries. It suggests that the investigated boundary conditions such as outside temperature, infiltration, envelope quality and user behaviour, which influence the heating load of a building, also influence the resulting potential for energy flexibility. The findings show that the combination of a slowly reacting heat transfer system, such as concrete core activation and a readily available storage mass in the room, and a high insulation standard proved to have a high potential to shift heating loads.

Originality/value

In this paper, energy-flexible components were evaluated in a steady-state simulation approach. Outside temperature, solar irradiation and internal loads over the simulation duration were set constant over time to provide laboratory conditions for the potential analysis. On the basis of both duration and performance of the load shifting or storage event, the components were then quantified in a parametric simulation. The determined energy flexibility is directly related to the power of the heating, cooling, hot water and ventilation system, which can be switched on or off. In general, it can be seen that high power (high loads) demand usually can be switched on and off for a short duration, and low power demand usually for a longer duration. The investigated boundary conditions such as outside temperature, infiltration, envelope quality and user behaviour, which influence the load of a building, also influence the resulting potential for energy flexibility. Higher insulation standards, for example, lead to lower loads that can be switched on or off, but increase the duration of the event (flexibility time). So that, in particular, the shiftable load potential is low but results in a long switch-off duration. Furthermore, passive storage potential in buildings like the storage mass inside the room and the type of heat/cooling transfer system can affect the flexibility potential by more than three times. Especially the combination of a high storage mass and a concrete core heat transfer system can significantly increase the flexibility.

Unmanned vehicles are moving rapidly into new applications such as agriculture, environmental monitoring and medical along with maintaining their importance in the traditional military and security applications of the past.

Customers will be surprised at the innovations making these robotic vehicles smaller, smarter and more adaptable to a wide range of new applications.

Originality/value

A review of some of the latest innovations and applications for unmanned vehicles that one might have seen if they had been on the exhibition floor at the most recent Washington DC unmanned vehicle show.
