Abstract

The robotized cylinder head and engine assembly lines at the Opel car factory in Kaiserslautern, Germany, make it one of the most advanced of its kind in the world. Designed and installed by ABB as a turnkey system, the project has set new standards for logistics, floor‐space requirements, economy and productivity. Zero‐defect production was given the highest priority during planning and realization of the assembly lines. Robot stations, special‐purpose machines and manual workstations have been combined in a way that optimizes the plant configuration and achieves maximum benefit for the plant operators.

Abstract

Looks at refurbishment services which can increase the life expectancy of robots. The services range from a thorough inspection and cleaning to a complete factory‐certified mechanical reconditioning program. At the same time robots can be upgraded to take advantage of current technological advancements such as new software equipment, accessories and expanded memories. Describes an exchange service where worn robots are immediately replaced by reconditioned units which saves money and minimizes production line disruption. Concludes that refurbishing is an increasingly successful business area that can also offer opportunities for manufacturing companies by either exchanging or buying previously owned robots.

Abstract

Describes the latest robot, the IRB 340 FlexPicker, from ABB Flexible Automation that is designed for high speed picking and placing operations found in the food and beverage industry. The new gantry mounted robot is based on a triple arm configuration licensed from a Swiss company. The robot is available with a vision system developed by Cognex utilising the patented PatMax image analysis system that is able to tolerate a high degree of image degradation and is ideal for industrial applications where ambient conditions may vary. A variety of possible layouts for picking, collating and mixing products are described.
