Abstract

This article attempts to examine the impact that traditional island cultural events have on tourism development in some of the West Indian (Commonwealth Caribbean) islands, how national tourist boards and hotels use these mega‐events for promotional purposes, how these cultural events are looked upon by the tourists themselves, and the possible dilution of the basic traditions and cultures of the territories if they are abused for tourist gain only.

Abstract

I‐V characteristics of GaAs n‐i‐n structures are calculated by considering impact ionization of carriers. Impact ionization at reverse‐biased n‐i junction becomes a cause of steep current rise when an acceptor density in the i‐layer is high. It is shown that an optimum acceptor density exists to keep a good isolation. Photoconduction transients of GaAs n‐i‐n structures are also simulated, and are shown to be strongly affected by existence of n‐i junctions.

Abstract

In the course of development of human communities towards industrially advanced societies of today, there have been changes not only in economic conditions in the majority of fields of human activity but also in the ways of providing for food, which went hand in hand with changes in living conditions. Large‐scale industrial production has brought about major changes in the way of life of the population. The development of industrial agglomerations results in a growing number of city dwellers, most of whom have no chance of producing foodstuffs of their own in kind. The distance between residential and industrial areas has been growing, the number of employed women has risen considerably. These are but a few factors affecting the way of boarding, particularly in households.

Abstract

This paper deals with the existence of a curve of minimal length, expressed in parametric coordinates, which densifies the square J2=≤ft [ −1,1\right ] × ≤ft [ −1,1\right ] \ with a given degree of density α. Nevertheless, the same problem has no solution if we consider the family of curves defined by means of the graphics of continuous and rectifiable functions f: J→ J. Their consequences on the approximation method to the global optimization are also derived.

Abstract

Main Difficulties Traditionally agriculture and industry were — until recent times — the only real resources. Historical events and the political situation empeded the government to pay the necessary attention to the economical and cultural advantages of national and international tourism. Another hindrance was the negative opinion — one of the long‐lasting consequences of the “Cultural Revolution” — about Lu‐lio (travel and sight‐seeing), which made the natives shrink from the latest ideas about tourism.

Abstract

In systems theory, authors such as Klir, Miller, Yang, Lin and Ma, Backlund, etc. have developed different definitions of the system concept in function of both the type of variables used and the type of connection between variables. The concept of the subsystem, however, tends not to vary substantially from author to author, and this leads to a new system definition based on the subsystem concept, analysing the possible cases of interaction between subsystems and obtaining results for the overall system from an analysis of its subsystems.

Abstract

The economic value of tourism in developing countries — an issue? Kenya, as other developing countries, develops its tourism, principally to take advantage of its economic benefits. So far Kenya is convinced about these benefits. More doubts, however, have been raised elsewhere, including certain industrialized donor countries. One objection bases on the opinion that developing countries would obtain only minor returns from tourism. This pre‐occupancy confuses the whole travel package (which includes air‐fare, services rendered in the countries of origin and the margin for foreign tour operators) and services rendered in Kenya. As has been shown in this Ministry even for travel packages Kenya receives some 57 % of net returns (value added) in foreign exchange (F.E.). Hotel services in Kenya alone account for some 85 % of net receipts in F.E. In the particular case of imported wines and liquors it could be proved that one Shilling spent for imports yields eight Shillings in F.E.

Abstract

Studies the concept of subsystems and introduces two important classes of systems. One class contains systems with the property of complete subsystems and the other contains systems with the property of completely trivial subsystems. Discusses the following questions in great detail and uses the results in the research of linearly ordered sets, partially ordered sets, ordered groups and ordered algebras: existence, heredity, infinity, cardinality, proper classes, proper subclasses, categories, isomorphic categories, etc.

Abstract

Sequel of no. 4/83, p. 24 Not many national associations hold conventions in countries other than their own. In Northwest Europe it is unlikely that any country is a net recipient of national conventions from elsewhere in Europe. In fact, there is likely to be some small ‘leakage’ of national association conventions to destinations in the Mediterranean or further afield. However, Northwest Europe (particularly the U.K. and Ireland) receives a small number of North American association conventions. Based on the available data this may amount to some 25 large conventions yearly.
