Abstract

Purpose

Internet-based marketing communication has been an important element for organizations to build brand image and brand equity. Higher education is not an exception. However, configuring the right mix in the age of social networking sites and various online displays and constantly changing algorithm in search engine optimization have become major challenges today. Hence, the purpose of this study is to configure integrated online marketing communication for the development of brand image and brand equity for higher educational institutions.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is quantitative in nature. A responsive group of 370 students was chosen from different educational institutions in Malaysia via stratified random sampling techniques. Both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used for interpreting the data. To test the derived hypotheses, structural equation modelling was used.

Findings

In line with contemporary literature, the study revealed positive relationships between brand image and brand equity, between search engine and brand image and between social media and brand image. The relationship between online display and brand image was not found significant.

Research limitations/implications

Future research can be done considering both online and conventional marketing communications for the same purpose. This approach can also be used for private and public institutions separately, considering their differences in nature.

Practical implications

Because history and tradition are no more a single tool to attain and retain the positive image and customer-based brand equity, this study can help higher educational institutions to configure integrated online communication for their target groups, such as students and industry, in the age of the internet.

Originality/value

This study generates a comprehensive understanding of the impact of Web-based marketing communication to develop brand image and brand equity of higher educational institutions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of explanation on customer satisfaction in the service failure stage. It seeks to better understand the dynamics of consumer repurchase intention through a mediating effect of customer satisfaction.

Design/methodology/approach

A structured questionnaire was e-mailed to collect the primary data. With three reminders, this study managed to obtain 322 responses from customers who complained about their internet service in Malaysia. Structural equation modelling techniques were applied to examine both direct and mediating effects between variables.

Findings

Results reveal that all four dimensions of explanation have significant partial mediating effect on repurchase intention through customer satisfaction. Results also disclose that there is no significant relationship between excuse and customer satisfaction in service failure. Among all dimensions, reference and apology have higher influence on repurchase intention through customer satisfaction.

Research limitations/implications

The results are particularly valuable for managers, as it supports the role of using explanation as a practical tool for fostering positive and profitable outcomes like repeat customer purchases.

Practical implications

The findings of this study will help organisations rethink their explanation strategies with the eye to foster greater customer repurchase intention.

Originality/value

The results are particularly valuable for managers, as they support the role of using explanation as a practical tool for fostering positive and profitable outcomes like repeat customer purchases.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the impact of organizational politics on the performance of readymade garments employees in Bangladesh. The other purpose is to empirically test the hypothesized relationship of the research framework. This study also highlighted some propositions to guide future empirical research.

Design/methodology/approach

The survey instrument was administered on 250 employees. This paper develops a measure for exploring the organizational politics on employees' performances included with employees' commitment as a mediating variable. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was used to extract and test the key influential attributes on the basis of data of total samples respectively. Structural equation model was also used to define the structure of influencing attributes and to measure the degree of impact for each attribute on the employees' performances.

Findings

The result shows that the organizational politics affect most significantly towards employees' commitment and as a consequence affect on employees' performances as well. On the other hand organizational politics does not have any significant impact on employees' performance.

Research limitations/implications

This research used convenience sampling procedure which is the main limitation of this study. Future studies could use stratified random sampling procedure with more samples. On the other hand the EFA is difficult to generalize to a larger audience, and there was a lack of experimental control for the questionnaire investigation, so the quality of questionnaire cannot be ensured.

Practical implications

It is hoped that the findings of this study will assist the government, NGO and garment industry owners to better understand their employees.

Originality/value

The added value of this paper is to link theory and practice, and explore the organizational politics and employees' performance. Few studies have conducted over the years under this perspective in the Bangladeshi environment. Moreover, this is a relatively new issue that remains largely under researched given the developing country perspective.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to assess the existing advertising practices in Malaysia and their compliance with the Shariah (Islamic Law).

Design/methodology/approach

Using descriptive observations, the promotional tools and practices used by the prominent conventional banks were compared to those used by the Islamic banks. A total of 40 different advertisements were assessed as well as staff and personnel from 30 branches were interviewed.

Findings

The paper reveals that customers remain unaware of the Islamic banks' products. Shariah‐based promotions will help increase customer awareness of these banks and their offerings.

Research limitations/implications

Future research on Shariah‐based promotions and advertising will improve banks' effectiveness and help position them as role models for other advertisers, both Islamic and non‐Islamic. The producers of Islamic advertisements need to apply precise screening procedures that ensure the delivery of their message through Shariah‐compliant methods.

Originality/value

The paper contributes to research through improving understanding of the main issues relating to the effect of advertising practices in Islamic societies.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to identify the factors that influence Malaysian non-Muslim consumers’ perception towards buying halal food products.

Design/methodology/approach

A structured close-ended questionnaire was used for data collection through a random distribution to 500 non-Muslim consumers from various states in Malaysia.

Findings

Using SPSS package, the factor analysis was able to identify three main variables. Later, the hypotheses were tested using structural equation modelling. This study has indicated that the perception of non-Muslim consumers about halal food products is influenced by their attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioural control, specifically in the context of Malaysia.

Research limitations/implications

This finding will help both the academics and the industry food makers in understanding the perception of non-Muslim consumers towards the concept of halal food products.

Practical implications

The outcome of the study can serve as a useful reference to relevant Malaysian statutory bodies on the current perception of the Malaysian non-Muslim consumers towards Malaysian halal agenda. This will also help the industry food makers to serve their customers better as well as maximize their profit through a well-planned marketing campaign.

Social implications

It prepares a sound basis for Malaysian policymakers to promote the involvement of Malaysian non-Muslim entrepreneurs within the halal food service industry with the intent of improving the socio-economic strata of its participants and, at the same time, fulfilling their religious obligations in providing halal foods for fellow Muslims.

Originality/value

Because very few researches have studied non-Muslim consumers’ perception towards halal food products, the development of halal food theory will help in capitalizing the practices in non-Muslim countries.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide an overview of research topics and publications produced by Islamic Finance scholars in Malaysia, focusing on six research domains (Shariah-based, Islamic Finance, Islamic Economics, Islamic Accounting, Islamic Management and Halal Management) in five public universities in Malaysia.

Design/methodology/approach

This study seeks to analyse the research gaps and recommend future research based on publications produced by Islamic Finance scholars from five public universities in Malaysia. Data on talents were collected from the MIFER report 2016 and each universities’ website, while research and publications of the talents were collected from Google Scholar and the Scopus database. The extracted data were analysed using bibliometric analysis in VOSviewer version 1.6.15.

Findings

The results show that the five selected universities talents have different research strengths according to six research domains highlighted in MIFER 2021 and Beyond Report. All five universities are found to contribute the least research in Halal Management domain. In view of the increasing prominence of this area of research in the national and international levels, these universities and other universities in Malaysia can generate more research in Halal Economy, Halal Management, and other related areas within this domain. The finding indicated that each university tends to have a strength according to the different domains, and 2019 is the most productive year for Islamic Finance publications. Analysis from productive scholars and co-citations shows that the authors collaborate within the same university to create a different topic for each research cluster.

Research limitations/implications

The bibliometric analysis only captures the general keyword terms, which may be limited to the only generalised sub-research areas.

Practical implications

This bibliometric study, which is based on the expertise of researchers, complements meta-analysis, and qualitative structured literature reviews aid researchers or talents in developing future research directions such as Green economy, Cryptocurrency, Fintech, Halal Management and others. In addition, this is a case study in nature and can serve to enhance understanding the landscape of Islamic finance education and as a reference for practices in institutions of higher learning from around the world.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is a new research initiative comparing five top programme providers in the field of Islamic finance using a bibliometric approach to enhance talent development and capacity building. With the government’s efforts to further promote Malaysia as the Islamic Financial Hub, this study highlights the research gap in Islamic finance based on scholars’ publications from selected five Malaysian universities and potential topics for future research. This study focuses on the research domain for each university, the trend of publishing, the number of journals published by academics, productive scholars and citations by Malaysian universities, and examines if the publications align with current industry needs.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the link between research and practice within the context of Islamic marketing (IM), an issue which is controversial in the literature. It offers reasonable answers that bridge the gap between research and practice, as well as the way to mitigate it.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a critical approach to analytically review the literature on IM, and relates it to research and practice.

Findings

Abstract

Purpose

As universities are human capital intensive organizations, practices followed by a university for enhancing the satisfaction of its teachers can be of great help in attracting, retaining and managing highly qualified and competent teachers. The purpose of this paper is to empirically examine the impact of job satisfaction (JS) on organizational commitment (OC) of university teachers in India.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 396 academicians are surveyed to assess the subjects’ responses to JS and commitment questionnaire. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used in the process of statistical analysis.

Findings

The results confirmed a significant impact of JS on OC of university teachers in India. With 1 percent increase in estimates of pay and job security (PJS), organizational support (OS) and job challenge (JC), there would be 21, 36 and 49 percentage increase, respectively, in OC of university teachers. Of all the factors of JS, JC is the most significant contributing factor, followed by OC and PJS that help in motivating and retaining the teachers in higher education institutions in India.

Research limitations/implications

The sample of the study has been chosen from the higher education sector in Northern India, and so it still needs to be explored whether the findings of this study can be replicated in different geographical areas and organizational settings for further verification and generalization.

Practical implications

Encouraging greater satisfaction among the faculty members may positively influence work-related behaviors, especially commitment among the teachers. The paper may benefit the decision makers in universities to follow the proactive practices to improve the satisfaction and commitment of teachers as educational performance is of priority on the national agenda.

Originality/value

The study provides useful insights about a JS-OC relationship model and informs the stakeholders on how to create an enabling environment at the policy and practice level that would help in attracting and retaining teachers in universities in India. It contributes to enriching the JS and OC literature in a sector and a country poorly addressed so far in research.
