Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the mediating role of “employees’ likelihood to voice (ELTV)” in the relationship between “online social networking (OSN)” and “employee retention (ER)” and to predict the effect of OSN on ELTV and ER.

Design/methodology/approach

A cross-sectional study using the survey method was employed to collect data from 251 administrative staff of the healthcare industry. The partial least squares (PLS) technique, using SmartPLS3 software, was employed to test the study hypotheses.

Findings

The results of this study supported the direct effect of OSN on ELTV and ER. Moreover, the mediating effect of ELTV was also supported by the data.

Originality/value

This study provides new knowledge about the direct and indirect effects of OSN on ELTV and ER.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper describes concepts of attribution and requirements of leadership and links them to related Islamic concepts.

Findings

A correlation is found to exist between attribution and requirements of “conventional” and Islamic leadership.

Research limitations/implications

Being a practical endeavor, attribution and requirements of “conventional” leadership converge with Islamic leadership.

Practical implications

It is hoped that leaders and managers would not hesitate to apply Islamic leadership style.

Originality/value

This paper will add to the literature on Islamic leadership, especially for Indonesia.

Abstract

Peat swamp forest fire hazard areas were identified and mapped by integrating GIS‐grid‐based and multi‐criteria analysis to provide valuable information about the areas most likely to be affected by fire in the Pekan District, south of Pahang, Malaysia. A spatially weighted index model was implemented to develop the fire hazard assessment model used in this study. Fire‐causing factors such as land use, road network, slope, aspect and elevation data were used in this application. A two‐mosaic Landsat TM scene was used to extract land use parameters of the study area. A triangle irregular network was generated from the digitized topographic map to produce a slope risk map, an aspect risk map and an elevation risk map. Spatial analysis was applied to reclassify and overlay all grid hazard maps to produce a final peat swamp forest fire hazard map. To validate the model, the actual fire occurrence map was compared with the fire hazard zone area derived from the model. The model can be used only for specific areas, and other criteria should be considered if the model is used for other areas. The results show that most of the actual fire spots are located in very high and high fire risk zones identified by the model.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper provides some fundamental observations on leadership from an Islamic perspective and the Islamic revealed knowledge. The purpose of this paper is to measure the association between Islamic leadership and the most common western forms of leadership namely; transactional, transformational, authentic, and ethical leadership styles as well as its relationship on leader’s effectiveness and organizational innovation.

Design/methodology/approach

An empirical investigation was conducted using portrait value questionnaire recommended by Schwartz (1994b), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) followed by structural equation modelling (SEM).

Findings

The results indicated that Islamic leadership is positively and significantly associated with perception of leader effectiveness and innovation outcomes. In addition the findings revealed that Islamic leadership is positively correlated with transformational, ethical, and authentic leadership as well and not with the transactional leadership style.

Practical implications

Among the practical implications of this research is that while a large body of leadership research has adopted a variation of leadership theories, our results suggest that we should seize to pay attention to the influential Islamic leadership.

Originality/value

The originality of this paper is that it extends scholarly understanding on Islamic perspectives of management which is a relatively new and growing area of interest for academics and practitioners, in terms of both theory and practice.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to propose a new model of Islamic cooperative mortgage of housing finance (ICOM) to provide a lower monthly initial amount with a longer tenure for the low- and middle-income members. This model is developed to ease the burden on borrowers concerning the high initial down payment (ID).

Design/methodology/approach

The ICOM model is a no-interest mortgage and is developed based on the cooperative home mortgage model by Ebrahim (2009). The model is verified using numerical examples to ensure its feasibility to produce lower monthly initial amounts and compared to the cooperative home mortgage.

Findings

From the numerical example, the ICOM model shows a lower monthly initial amount with a longer tenure compared to the cooperative home mortgage. The monthly payment is also lower than the cooperative home mortgage.

Research limitations/implications

The authors compare their model with Ebrahim’s (2009) cooperative home mortgage because of a constraint of limited previous studies on housing finance. Therefore, this model is developed by considering the unaffordability of the initial down payment among low-income borrowers. As this model introduces a lower monthly initial amount, the authors expect it can reduce the unaffordability problem of high initial down payment.

Practical implications

The authors also expect that a lower monthly initial amount with a longer tenure can ease the burden among the low-income borrowers by reducing their consumption on housing.

Originality/value

This paper provides a non-interest Islamic cooperative mortgage and lower monthly initial amount with a longer tenure for the low- and middle-income borrowers.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the issue of residential price in Malaysia from a supply-side perspective. The views are directly obtained from medium and small-scale developers in Malaysia.

Design/methodology/approach

We used the semi-structured interview for analysis purpose. The samples are from property developers (medium and small-scale developers) and a single respondent from the Malaysian National House Buyers Association. We used the judgmental sampling method to choose respondents for this study. The interview results went through content analysis in order to derive common themes, resulting in the identification of four main themes.

Findings

First, developers view that the residential market is growing at a good pace, albeit slowly. However, the issue of unaffordability and construction costs remains to haunt the progress of property development in Malaysia. Second, from supply-side perspectives, there are several main reasons why the residential prices in Malaysia are uncontrollable: (1) costs of construction, (2) taxes, (3) existing units, (4) location and (5) urbanization. The third theme is the government support in catering to the needs and wants of middle- and lower-income earners. Most respondents agreed that the government has been providing low-cost houses supported by various incentives. Finally, on price control strategies for residential units, recommended suggestions are as follow: embracing different methods of construction styles, promote the uses of local materials instead of relying on imported materials, continuously review rules and regulations, provide more incentives and to build partnerships between the government and private companies on affordable housing projects.

Practical implications

The research is expected to present solid findings and claimsseveral significant contributions, especially policy-wise. We believe this contribution will enrich the existing literature on residential market. The present study is also predicted to produce noteworthy findings to all stakeholders in the real-estate industry, such as potential home buyers and existing house owners to housing developers, marketers and government policy regulators, as well as academic institutions.

Originality/value

This study is expected to enrich the existing literature available in the context of real-estate finance such as property price and property policy in emerging economies like Malaysia. One distinguishing factor which differentiates this study from others in the literature is the feedbacks obtained from medium and small-scale developers, therefore deemed to be more solid and reliable. The current research in real-estate finance is mainly focused on empirical analysis and we believe this study will offer a breakthrough view on the matter of residential market in Malaysia.

Abstract

Purpose

Problems of Malaysian construction industry have often been associated, in part to incompetent construction manager (CM) when managing the construction projects. Although various education and training provisions have been introduced, critics argue that the provisions have not been effective. Central in the debate on the adequacy of the CM education and training offered is the answer to the question of “what constitutes the technical competency of the CM?” The purpose of this paper is to present the study that identifies the technical competencies required by the CM to address the question.

Design/methodology/approach

Multi-layered thematic analysis of literature was first carried out to identify the technical competency elements. Then, interviews were undertaken to confirm the elements of competencies. It was followed with questionnaire surveys to test the validity of the technical competencies against different contractors’ category and grade/size.

Findings

The findings suggest that the technical competencies of CM are generic, regardless of the size of construction organisation or the types of projects they undertake. A total of 16 CM technical competencies were identified which include the ability to manage: staff, materials, labour, plant, sub-contractors, safety, money, quality, time, environment, site administration, pre-construction activities, project closeout and handover, third parties, computer literacy, and construction contract.

Originality/value

The findings suggest that generic education and training is possible to develop technically competent CM. It also provides insights to the CM technical competencies which the industry is expecting.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to critically understand and find out the socio-political role of the Acehnese ulamas (Muslim scholars) in solving and coping with social issues faced by contemporary Acehnese society.

Design/methodology/approach

This study was conducted in the province of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, especially in the districts of Aceh Utara, Pidie, Aceh Besar, Aceh Selatan and Aceh Timur. The locations were chosen based on the consideration of the objective conditions that many ulamas were dwelling and could easily be found in these areas. Besides, the locations are historically believed as the origins of the Acehnese that are so diverse. In addition, a large number of social problems frequently arose within those regions. The subjects of this research study were a number of community determined by purposive sampling technique. The instruments used for the data collection in this research were observation, in-depth interview and library study; and interpretative understanding was also used to analyze the data.

Findings

The existence of the Acehnese ulamas represents the government’s recognition to word the traditional institutional in Aceh. However, some people think that institutions are used by the government to exploit ulama as the mediator between the government and the society. For the Acehnese ulamas, the institution could be used to consolidate their power for the benefit of the people.

Originality/value

The various theories discussed are considered the framework and guidance for this study, especially in terms of data collection and data analysis. The new theories and relevant references will also possibly be added to the following study.

The aim of this paper is to explore the situational and individual factors which motivate entrepreneurs to start a business in the construction industry.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to explore the situational and individual factors which motivate entrepreneurs to start a business in the construction industry.

Design/methodology/approach

Semi-structured interviews are undertaken with twenty-five entrepreneurs in the Australian construction industry.

Findings

Findings highlight the importance of eight recurring “situational” themes leading to the decision to start a business in the construction industry: life experiences; family background; roles models; education; previous employment; construction industry experience - especially at an early age; cultural factors and serendipity. Findings also reveal six recurring “individual” themes: individual agency; need for achievement; work–life balance; desire for independence, frustration avoidance and strategic instrumentality.

Research limitations/implications

The findings indicate that mainstream theories of entrepreneurship may underplay the importance of intergenerational traditions and cultural and informal institutional knowledge in the construction industry. The research is limited to interviews undertaken in the Australian construction industry.

Practical implications

The findings have important implications for research, policy and educational practice. For researchers they highlight the potential value of social identity and new institutional theories as novel conceptual lenses in future construction entrepreneurship research. They also raise new methodological questions regarding the use of ethnographic methods which are relatively rare in construction research. This research also has important implications for educators in informing novel pedagogies for delivering entrepreneurial education which engages students in experiential learning. The findings also inform innovation policy to enable more entrepreneurship in what is seen widely as a low-innovation industry.

Social implications

There is widespread agreement about the importance of entrepreneurship as a driver of increased productivity, income, employment, ecological health and social equality and mobility in society. This is especially important to minority groups such as refugees and Indigenous people who employ entrepreneurship to circumvent the many barriers they face in gaining traditional employment in the construction industry.

Originality/value

Drawing on both psychological and sociological schools of thought in entrepreneurship theory, this paper answers calls for more qualitative and industry-specific entrepreneurship research. It contributes new insights to both mainstream and construction entrepreneurship research by contributing new insights by highlighting situational and individual factors which motivate entrepreneurs to start a business in construction.

The paper aims to identify the critical success factors (CSFs) at an individual level for real estate developers (REDs) in India.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to identify the critical success factors (CSFs) at an individual level for real estate developers (REDs) in India.

Design/methodology/approach

Fifteen individual-level CSFs are identified from literature review. These CSFs are moderated through expert opinion, and they are customized for the real-estate sector. Five-point scale questionnaire is developed and furnished to REDs to understand the importance of these 15 CSFs. Fifty-six REDs responded to the survey. Using the responses from the survey, relative importance index is created for all 15 factors. These factors are also grouped in broad categories using exploratory factor analysis and the groups are further validated through confirmatory factor analysis.

Findings

The study finds that leadership quality, man-management skill, disputes resolution skill, ability to take risk and knowledge about construction and finance are the top five CSFs for REDs in India. The exploratory factor analysis resulted in five groups and they are named as “liaising with government,” “relationship management,” “knowledge management,” “skill management” and “ability.” The groups exhibit reasonable reliability and validity.

Research limitations/implications

Despite useful results, study being exploratory in nature is limited because of a small sample size. Despite best efforts, authors find reluctance from REDs to respond to the survey.

Practical implications

The findings of the study are important for REDs and success of their business. The business of REDs can improve if they exhibit leadership quality, man-management skill and disputes resolution skill. The ability of the developers to take risk and their knowledge about construction and finance can also be vital for the success of their business.

Originality/value

To the best of authors’ knowledge, this is the first attempt to identify CSFs for REDs in India.
