SHOCK tube measurement techniques require the use of instrumentation capable of sensing pressure variation across passing strong shock waves. The speed of shock wave passage along the shock tube is of the order of 6,000 to 7,000 ft./sec. while shock thickness is of the order of 0·1 in. This is calculated from the equation:—

THE development of a shock tube by the Department of Aerodynamics and Space Technology commenced in September, 1961, and was completed towards the end of 1962. The shock tube and the shock tunnel will fulfil two functions. They will serve primarily as teaching facilities, with post graduate courses in view and will also be used as an advanced tool for staff research.

Abstract

I AM delighted to dedicate my hundredth publication to a young and forward‐looking institution with clearly defined long‐term objectives and well considered determination to live up to the requirements of modern aeronautics and space technology— to the Department of Aeronautics and Space Technology (DEPAST) of the Northampton College of Advanced Technology. Unavoidably, I am looking at the DEPAST‐NCL, through the critical eyes of experience gained in the U.S.S.R., U.S.A., Germany, France, Holland and, of course, in Great Britain; and yet I feel I can say coram populo—coram publico that here we have something British, yet as dynamic and vigorous as any Continental or American educational/ research establishment known to me.

Abstract

Presents the initial findings of an ongoing study into the motives and uses of the joint venture by British investors in the Czech Republic. Observes that, despite the many opportunities presented of doing business in Eastern Europe, the British have been slow to invest; the UK does not feature in the top seven investors in the Czech Republic. Points out that it is a widely held belief that the joint venture is the most common mode of entry used by Western firms when investing in Central and Eastern Europe. Contends that there is a clear match between the needs of market‐seeking or cost advantage‐seeking Western firms on the one hand and the technological needs of the Eastern Europeans on the other. However, suggests from the study data that UK investors have chosen to own their foreign operations wholly rather than work with local partners. Examines the different modes of entry, the sector and the function of investment used by British firms. Notes the predominance of service activities.

The Decca Systems Study and Management Division has been awarded a contract by the U.S. Department of Commerce to study high speed navigation and collision avoidance for hovercraft. The project will take seven months to complete and will comprise an examination of the system requirements of large next generation hovercraft, weighing up to 4,000 tons, capable of speeds of 80 knots plus, and having a trans‐oceanic capability.
