Abstract

Fatigue failure caused by stress concentrations in tubular welded joints is observed in off shore platforms subjected to cyclic loading in corrosive marine environments. In some junctions, the stress concentration can induce a stress thirty times the nominal stress, and increase the risk of fatigue failure in tubular joints. Therefore, it is necessary to accurately assess the intensity of the stress concentrations to effectively deal with the problem of fatigue damage and lead to reliable tubular joints. This work aims to study the stress distribution and location of the "hot" spots in a Twelded tubular structure subjected to a combined loading of tension and bending (in-plane bending, out of plane bending and traction) to better simulate the actual loading.

Abstract

This work relates to the characterization with indentation of the hard chromium coatings, carried out by electrolytic way on a steel substrate. Steel thus covered is used for the construction of the jacks of industrial machines. We studied in this work the effect of size which can be due to the preparation of surfaces and which it is necessary to dissociate from a real effect of size related to the movements of dislocations for the vicinity of the free face. The effect of size of the print or the effect of load on the value of hardness with the indenter Vickers is thus studied for various preparations of surfaces, on samples polished by various processes and with or without lubrication. It was shown that pleating mainly masks the phenomenon of the effect of load and hardness and that the presence of an oil film enters the indenter and the material to be tested, led to a significant reduction in hardness. When the test of indentation is carried out with the interface of a coating and its substrate, it is possible to obtain a characteristic value of adherence starting from the cracking which generally develops in the plan of the interface. The number of hardness obtained by the test of Vickers indentation depends on the amplitude of the load applied lubrication and polishing before chromium plating.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to join an anodized aluminium alloy AA6061 sheet with high-density polyethylene (HDPE) using friction spot process.

Design/methodology/approach

The surface of AA6061 sheet was anodized to increase the pores’ size. A lap joint configuration was used to join the AA6061 with HDPE sheets by the friction spot process. The joining process was carried out using a rotating tool of different diameters: 14, 16 and 18 mm. Three tool-plunging depths were used – 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 mm – with three values of the processing time – 20, 30 and 40 s. The joining process parameters were designed according to the Taguchi approach. Two sets of samples were joined: the as-received AA6061/HDPE and the anodized AA6061/HDPE.

Findings

Frictional heat melted the HDPE layers near the lap joint line and penetrated it through the surface pores of the AA6061 sheet via the applied pressure of the tool. The tool diameter exhibited higher effect on the joint strength than processing time and the tool-plunging depth. Specimens of highest and lowest tensile force were failed by necking the polymer side and shearing the polymer layers at the lap joint, respectively. Molten HDPE was mechanically interlocked into the pores of the anodized surface of AA6061 with an interface line of 18-m width.

Originality/value

For the first time, HDPE was joined with the anodized AA6061 by the friction spot process. The joint strength reached an ideal efficiency of 100 per cent.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the performance of the Chaboche model in relation to the database identification, tests with imposed deformations were conducted at room temperature on 304L stainless steel specimens.

Design/methodology/approach

The first two tests were performed in tension-compression between ±0.005 and ±0.01; in the third test, each cycle is composed of the combination of a compression tensile cycle between ±0.01 followed by a torsion cycle between ±0.01723 (non-proportional path), and the last, uniaxial ratcheting test with a mean stress between 250 MPa and −150 MPa. Several identifications of a Chaboche-type model were then performed by considering databases composed of one or more of the cited tests. On the basis of these identifications, the simulations of a large number of ratchet tests in particular were carried out.

Findings

The results present the effect of the optimized parameters on the prediction of the behavior of materials which is reported in the graphs, Optimizations 1 and 2 of first and second tests and Optimization 4 of the third test giving a good prediction of the increasing/decreasing pre-deformation amplitude.

Originality/value

The quality of the model's predictions strongly depends on the richness of the database used for the identification of the parameters.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review the literature on maintenance optimization models and associated case studies. For these optimization models critical observations are made.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper systematically classifies the published literature using different techniques, and also identifies the possible gaps.

Findings

The paper outlines important techniques used in various maintenance optimization models including the analytical hierarchy process, the Bayesian approach, the Galbraith information processing model and genetic algorithms. There is an emerging trend towards uses of simulation for maintenance optimization which has changed the maintenance view.

Practical implications

A limited literature is available on the classification of maintenance optimization models and on its associated case studies. The paper classifies the literature on maintenance optimization models on different optimization techniques and based on emerging trends it outlines the directions for future research in the area of maintenance optimization.

Originality/value

The paper provides many references and case studies on maintenance optimization models and techniques. It gives useful references for maintenance management professionals and researchers working on maintenance optimization.
