Abstract

Stella Artois, an AB InBev brand, is the world's best-selling Belgian beer. In early 2017, Ricardo Tadeu, AB InBev Zone President for Africa, is planning the brand's entry into its next export market: South Africa. The case explores Stella's introduction strategies into three of its export markets—the UK (1976), the US (2000), and Mexico (2016)—examining the drivers of the brand's success as well as its failures. Students will analyze the brand's previous launches to determine what made it successful in some markets and not in others. They will apply these learnings to develop a strategy for the brand's introduction to the South African market. Beyond the central discussion of growth through international expansion, the case addresses issues of brand positioning for premium products, changing consumer perceptions, the use of cause marketing, category development and maturity, and competitive strategy.

Abstract

Time is an increasingly important element in logistics strategy development. Service reliability and performance can give a real competitive edge. They can also reduce inventory and total distribution costs. Marketeers are now looking to distribution to ‘add value’. Alan Braithwaite of Logistics Consulting Partners describes the use of a new software tool STELLA which can be applied to provide the time dimension in planning logistics.

Abstract

Ethical practices in relation to indigenous research require that the researcher decolonise the research. This can be challenging when institutional guidelines are unclear but at the same time exacting in terms of the level of input required as a prerequisite for approval. This article explores the ambiguities of approval through a study of the application process for ‘my’ doctoral research to observe indigenous athlete‐role models engaging with young people. I draw on Simmel’s (1976) ‘stranger’ to enunciate the constraints of approval and consent within a decolonising methodology and to propose the possibilities of an ethics of the self.

Abstract

We develop a numerical analysis of the buoyancy driven natural convection of a fluid in a three dimensional shallow cavity (4 ⋅ 1 ⋅ 1) with a horizontal gradient of temperature along the larger dimension. The fluid is a liquid metal (Prandtl number equal to 0. 015) while the Grashof number (Gr) varies in the range 100,000‐300,000. The Navier‐Stokes equations in vorticity‐velocity formulation have been integrated by means of a linearized fully implicit scheme. The evaluation of fractal dimension of the attractors in the phase space has allowed the detection of the chaotic regime. The Ruelle‐Takens bifurcation sequence has been observed as mechanism for the transition to chaos: the quasi periodic regime with three incommensurate frequencies is the instability mechanism responsible for the transition to chaos. Physical experiments confirm the existence of this scenario.

Abstract

Research methodology

The case proposes a discussion of the time value of money and capital budgeting concepts, including determining the effective overall cost of capital, estimating working capital requirements, consideration of all relevant cash flows – including opportunity costs, finding the present value of future cash flows (annuities and lump-sum cash flows) by linking the concepts of weighted average cost of capital and working capital and net present value (NPV) and internal rate of return (IRR).

Case overview/synopsis

Jehan Wadia, a newly appointed finance manager of Tembo Global Industries Ltd., is facing a dilemma in recommending an investment decision to Mr Variava, Chief Finance Officer. Implementation of the project requires an investment of INR 82m. Ms Stella, funding division head, proposed financing through equity and term loans in the proportion of 3:2, respectively. Mr Shrinivasan, handling the short-term financial needs of the firm, suggested a finance mix having a higher weight-age of debt. Mr Variava desires to maximize the wealth by taping the opportunity. The case is written for an experience in the capital budgeting dichotomy faced by managers in real-life situations.

Complexity academic level

This case can be used in various contexts – as a preparatory case in a foundation course of Financial Management at the graduate level to instill the fundamentals for evaluating long-term investment decisions or in courses of Strategic Financial Management or Corporate Finance at the undergraduate or graduate level as a capstone case to reinforce the application of multiple concepts in strategic financial decision making.

Abstract

This paper deals with the problem of internal overvoltages within large coils due to fast‐rising surges. Numerical simulations are performed on a lumped‐parameter equivalent circuit, representing a coil of the magnetic system of a thermo‐nuclear fusion experiment. Inductances and capacitances are computed through numerical methods which ensure a good precision even with complex geometries. The effect of the conductive painting on the outer surface of the coil is also taken into account. The simulation results are compared with a number of measurements on a full‐size prototype coil. Turn‐to‐earth, as well as inter‐turn overvoltages, are both computed and measured in many grounding conditions. The experimental results fit well with computation and theoretical prediction.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine consumer preference for ethical fashion products by focusing on the importance of animal welfare attribute. To explain the attitude-behavior gap, this research proposes to explore the costs and sacrifices associated with the adoption of responsible behaviors.

Design/methodology/approach

To analyze in which manner the animal welfare attribute impacts the consumer preference, the authors carried two quantitative studies in the Italy context. The first one (n = 224) proposes to measure the importance of this attribute in the case of luxury vs accessible fashion. The second study (n = 101) examines how the attention given to animal welfare information could vary between prosocials and proselfs. Conjoint analyses that consider “proportion of real fur”; “information about animal treatment” and “price” attributes have been realized. To take into account the individuals characteristics, cluster analysis helped to identify different profiles of consumers.

Findings

The results reveal that even if consumers continue to prefer products made entirely from animal fur, they are sensitive to the information on the animal treatment conditions. Also, the animal welfare is not the most important criterion in explaining preference for a fashion product. This result varies, however, regarding the consumers’ social value orientation. Individuals with a high level of prosocial values give more importance to the animal welfare attribute and are less reluctant to the reduction of the proportion of real fur in the clothes. Proself consumers associate a higher sacrifice with the consumption of animal-friendly fashion products.

Research limitations/implications

This research enriches the limited literature on the consumers’ response to animal-friendly products. By considering the consumers’ social value orientation, it provides a better understanding of the attitude-behavior gap in animal-friendly fashion consumption. However, further studies should focus on the way of adapting communication on eco-products to the consumer profile. Moreover, it seems interesting to explore how the integration of innovative environmentally friendly materials can be accepted by the target. Replicating this research with representative consumer samples from different countries is also necessary.

Practical implications

From a practical point of view, this research offers implications for managers operating in fashion apparel industry by giving insights on the consumers’ preference for animal friendly fashion.

Social implications

This study gives recommendations to help convincing consumers about the importance of animal welfare attribute and to increase their preference for animal-friendly fashion products.

Originality/value

Despite the extensive use of animal fibers, fur and skins in the production of textiles, the few researchers who have shed the light on the consumers’ response to animal-friendly products have considered mainly the case of food. Also, the marketing literature gives little explanation of the attitude-behavior gap in ethical fashion consumption. By examining the consumers’ social value orientation, this study provides a better understanding of this gap.

Abstract

Purpose

Researchers into entrepreneurial strategy have overlooked the impact of small vs big investments on a venture's return on investment (ROI). The purpose of this paper is to investigate to what extent does entrepreneurial behavior impact initial investment size and the return on that investment?

Design/methodology/approach

This investigation summarizes research into entrepreneurial leadership behavior and uses data from longitudinal case studies of four innovative start‐up wine businesses in California, India, and Italy.

Findings

Investment size and ROI appear to be related to entrepreneurial behavior.

Practical implications

Lead entrepreneurs must develop both technical competence and social networking skills to achieve small wins, i.e. early if only modest ROI.

Originality/value

This paper develops a model consisting of several testable propositions to measure the impact of entrepreneurial behavior on ROI.

Abstract

MANY WRITERS have something to say to us; a few speak to one's condition. For some of us, of this time and place, James Kennaway was one of those few, and this is why news of his death in December 1969 had for many people to whom he was known only through his work the impact, almost, of a personal loss.
