Abstract

Three‐dimensional transient analysis of a submerged cylindrical shell is presented. Three‐dimensional trilinear eight‐noded isoparametric fluid element with pressure variable as unknown is coupled to a nine‐noded degenerate shell element. Staggered solution scheme is shown to be very effective for this problem. This allows significant flexibility in selecting an explicit or implicit integrator to obtain the solution in an economical way. Three‐dimensional transient analysis of the coupled shell fluid problem demonstrates that inclusion of bending mode is very important for submerged tube design—a factor which has not received attention, since most of the reported results are based on simplified two‐dimensional plane strain analysis.

Abstract

This paper focuses attention on a three field coupled problem consisting of two cylindrical shells submerged in an acoustic medium. Method of partitioning is used successfully to partition the three fields. It is shown that the two cylinders are coupled by three‐dimensional flow field and bending mode is important. The paper ends with concluding remarks for extending this method for safety analysis of submerged tubes to include non‐linear fluid/structure behaviour.

Abstract

This paper demonstrates the capability of staggered solution procedure for coupled fluid‐structure interaction problems. Three possible computational paths for coupled problems are described. These are critically examined for a variety of coupled problems with different types of mesh partitioning schemes. The results are compared with the reported results by continuum mechanics priority approach—a method which has been very popular until recently. Optimum computational paths and mesh partitionings for two field problems are indicated. Staggered solution procedure is shown to be quite effective when optimum path and partitionings are selected.

Abstract

Purpose

Modularity in design and construction of nuclear power plants (NPPs) is widely used for reduction in project construction time and cost. This paper aims to improve understanding of existence, rationale, relevance, types and definitions of modularity in NPPs.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper approaches study of modularity in NPPs through review of existing literature. The objective of this paper is to answer the questions such as “what is the meaning of module in the context of NPPs?”, “what is the meaning of modularity in the context of NPPs?”, “why modularity is considered in the design and construction of NPPs?”, “what are the types of modules and modularity?” and “what are the emerging trends?”

Findings

Findings of the paper indicate towards widespread use of modularity to reduce construction time and cost, improve safety performance and enable smarter applications of NPPs. Large NPPs tend to use modularity to shorten the project gestation period, and thereby reduce capital cost. Small and medium size NPPs plan to use modularity for simpler and safer reactors that can be factory manufactured, transported, installed and scaled up as permitted by the economic environment.

Research limitations/implications

This being a review, it has the usual limitations associated with the literature review papers.

Practical implications

Findings of the paper may influence policy regarding option, type, size, design, engineering, procurement and construction of NPPs.

Social implications

Findings of the paper may influence the safety, cost, time and quality performance of future NPPs and facilitate cheaper and more reliable supply of electricity to consumers.

Originality/value

The systematic literature review presents issues and emerging trends in modularity of NPPs, enabling the future work to progress as modularity continues to develop and evolve. The paper also proposes a comprehensive classification and definitions of modules and modularity in NPPs that may facilitate understanding of these terms precisely and uniformly by researchers and practitioners alike.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to examine the adoption of an environmental management system (EMS) in government departments involved in one Australian state and identify the key factors that contribute to successful adoption.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected through semi‐structured interviews conducted with environmental coordinators involved in the EMS adoption. The external consultant appointed by the Environmental Protection Authority who provided the training on behalf of the government departments was also interviewed.

Findings

The results from the analysis shows that environmental coordinators valued the training as it enhanced their knowledge and skills. They experienced a combination of both tangible and intangible benefits. The lack of contribution and support from top management; difficulty in accessing resources; and resistance from employees were the main challenges experienced during EMS implementation. Recommendations made by the interviewees included: providing training to top management to increase their understanding of the EMS process and its benefits; selection of the right champion; provision of adequate resources; and, training of employees.

Research limitations/implications

The findings are based on interviews conducted in only one Australian state and no follow up interviews could be undertaken to track the progress made by various departments.

Originality/value

The findings of this paper are original as no other similar study has been undertaken in this Australian state documenting the experiences of environmental coordinators when implementing an EMS. Our findings have practical implications for public sector organisations and government departments implementing EMS.

Abstract

Purpose

Risk-based clearing has been proposed by Rausser et al. (2010) for over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives. This paper aims to illustrate the application of risk-based margins to a case study of the mortgage-backed securities derivative portfolio of the American International Group (AIG) during the period 2005-2008. There exists sufficient publicly available information to examine AIG’s derivative portfolio and how that portfolio would depend on conjectural changes in margin requirements imposed on its OTC derivative positions. Generally, such data on OTC derivative portfolio positions are unavailable in the public domain, and thus, the AIG data provide a unique opportunity for an objective evaluation.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper uses modern financial methodology to evaluate risk-based margining and collateralization for the major OTC derivative portfolio of the AIG.

Findings

This analysis reveals that a risk-based margin procedure would have led to earlier margin calls of greater magnitude initially than the collateral calls actually faced by AIG Financial Products (AIGFP). The total margin ultimately required by the risk-based procedure, however, is similar in magnitude to the collateral calls faced by AIGFP by August 2008. It is likely that a risk-based clearing procedure applied to AIG’s OTC contracts would have led to the AIG undertaking significant hedging and liquidation of their OTC positions well before the losses built up to the point they had, perhaps avoiding the federal government’s orchestrated restructuring that occurred in September 2008.

Originality/value

There has been no published risk-based evaluations of a major OTC portfolio of derivatives for any company, let alone the AIG.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to calculate the mixed‐mode stress intensity factors (SIFs) of a 3D crack meeting the interface in a bimaterial under shear loading by a hypersingular integral equation (HIE) method, And further to assess the accuracy of numerical solutions for the mixed mode SIFs along the crack front.

Design/methodology/approach

A 3D crack modeling is reduced to solving a set of HIEs. Based on the analytical solutions of the singular stress field around the crack front, a numerical method for the HIEs is proposed by a finite‐part integral method, where the displacement discontinuities of the crack surface are approximated by the product of basic density functions and polynomials. Using FORTRAN program, numerical solutions of the mixed‐mode SIFs of some examples are presented.

Findings

The numerical method is proved to be an effective construction technique. The numerical results show that this numerical technique is successful, and the solution precision is satisfied.

Research limitations/implications

This work takes further steps to improve the fundamental systems of HIE for its application in the fields of arbitrary shape crack problems. Propose several techniques for numerical implementation, which could increase the efficiency and accuracy of computation.

Practical implications

Whenever there is a structure containing the 3D crack, the analysis method described in this paper can be utilized to find the critical configurations under which the structure may be most vulnerable. In such cases, the strength predictions would be safer if the crack could be taken into account.

Originality/value

This paper is the first to apply HIE method to analyzing the mixed‐mode crack meeting the interface in 3D dissimilar materials. Numerical solutions of the mixed‐mode SIFs can give the satisfied solution precision.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to develop an elasto-plastic multi-material shell model by which finite element analysis of laser welded joints is carried out at the interface of the heat-affected zone and base material.

Design/methodology/approach

The multi-material shell model is implemented on the simple cantilever and double cantilever welded plates to examine the efficiency of the developed model.

Findings

By reducing the computational time approximately 20 times with the developed model, the results obtained in the form of von Mises stress and equivalent plastic strain are found in good agreement as compared with the reference solid model.

Originality/value

The accurate and fast prediction of the stresses and strains in the laser welded joints, and the developed multi-material model is helpful to simulate complex industrial welded structures.

Purpose

This paper aims to provide an overview of the market for corporate and sovereign credit default swaps (CDS), with particular focus on Europe. It studies whether the subprime crisis of 2007/2008 and, particularly, the European debt crisis 2009/2010 led to a differential development on corporate and sovereign CDS markets and investigates the primary use (speculative risk-trading or risk-hedging) of the two markets in recent years.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors use aggregate market data on the size of the respective markets and on the structure of market participants and their changes over time to assess the main research question. They enhance existing data from public sources such as the Bank for International Settlements and Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation with their own statistics on European sovereign CDS and combine their conclusions with observations regarding standardisation efforts and regulatory changes in the CDS market.

Findings

The authors show that after the subprime crisis 2007/2008 and the European debt crisis 2009/2010, the corporate and sovereign CDS markets developed quite differently. They provide evidence that since mid-2010, market participants started to use the sovereign CDS market more strongly for speculative purposes than for risk-hedging. This shows both in the shift of risk-quality of sovereign CDS contracts and in the changing structure of market participants. The ongoing standardisation and regulation in the CDS market – leading to further increases in transparency and reductions in transaction costs – may be expected to trigger a similar change also for corporate CDS.

Originality/value

Based on a broad variety of market infrastructure data, the authors show a diverging development of corporate and sovereign CDS markets in Europe in recent years. Particularly the sovereign CDS market appears to have shifted from a risk-hedging instrument to being used more strongly for speculative risk-trading. The authors combine their findings with recent regulatory action and market standardisation schemes and draw conclusions for the future development of CDS markets.

Abstract

Purpose

As the world faces a new health crisis threatening people with the spread of Covid-19, this study aims to summarize the key information of Covid-19 related to disease characteristics, diagnosis, treatment and prevention along with the lessons learned from Thailand.

Design/methodology/approach

The narrative review was synthesized from various sources such as the World Health Organization; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; Ministry of Public Health and other related news; articles in ScienceDirect, PubMed, Google Scholar; and the author's perspective regarding the lessons learned from Thailand with keywords of “Covid-19” and “Coronavirus” from January to August 2020. Google Trends was used to set common questions.

Findings

Covid-19 is the seventh family of coronaviruses that cause various symptoms related to respiratory systems. The disease can be treated through general and symptomatic treatment, by using antiviral drugs. As of July 2020, there are four potential vaccine candidates ChAdOx1 nCoV-19, mRNA-1273, Ad5-nCOV and BNT162b1. The recommendations for Covid-19 prevention are physical distancing, face masks, eye protection and hand washing. Thailand is now considered as low-risk for Covid-19 possibly because of (1) soft policy by government actions, (2) village health volunteers, (3) integration of technology and (4) fact-based communications.

Originality/value

This study summarized the key points about Covid-19, clarified some misunderstandings and shared strategic actions from Thailand, which can be adapted according to the different capacities and situations in other countries.
