Abstract

Purpose: Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries demonstrate outstanding potential for innovative entrepreneurship due to the undiversified economy it has. The chapter unravels knowledge management’s scope to convert the MENA into a knowledge economy while ensuring sustainable development. Knowledge management through digitalization, big data analytics, and other technology-enabled practices could be embraced through various knowledge clusters and innovation networks.

Design/methodology/approach: The chapter proposes a conceptual model based on the quadruple helix model of innovation and associated knowledge and innovation networks operating together through a technology-enabled knowledge management process. MENA’s current status and expected performance are analyzed based on the given model.

Findings: An emergent need to digitalize the institutional operations, and knowledge flow from the four helices of innovation is realized. To ensure economic sustainability, MENA countries need to work on political stability, transparency, and accountability to ensure the flow of reliable knowledge in the knowledge management process. Building human competencies and skills is still a challenge for many MENA countries. Hence, education institutes need to introduce academic programs that are compatible with the labor requirement of the area. Since the region has a youth population in large proportion, human capital formation can bypass the over-population and unemployment challenge and instead become a competitive advantage.

Originality/value: The given chapter explores the knowledge management process, capabilities, benefits, competencies from the perspective of sustainable growth in MENA countries. It also recommends extensive data operations and analytics to enhance the knowledge-based economy.

Abstract

Purpose

The chapter presents case evidence to argue that rather than comprising noncore, back-office business support services, shared service centers (SSCs), when viewed from a knowledge management perspective, can create both valuable and firm-specific resources and dynamic capabilities.

Design/methodology/approach

Literatures in strategic management, knowledge management, and business process sourcing are drawn on as a prelude to a longitudinal case study conducted by the authors in a large private sector utility company.

Findings

A knowledge management perspective demonstrates how the SSCs, as a hybrid organizational form, may help to redefine core versus noncore activities and thus, to play a role in the creation and protection of firm-specific resource and dynamic capabilities.

Research limitations/implications

The SSC model is an emerging phenomenon and the field work is restricted to a single case study. Further field research is suggested.

Practical implications

The findings should be useful to those organizations embarking on the reconfiguration of back-office support services which might gain from further consideration of what activities might be seen as constituting core enterprise architecture. The case study demonstrates that when the traditional core activities of the organization become commoditized over time, a core competence becomes the management and administration of a bundle of technical projects premised on the processes and information systems of the SSC.

Originality/value

Shared services is an emerging phenomena and scholar literature is nascent. The chapter explores potential benefits of the SSC model beyond the headline agenda of cost reduction through efficiency savings and labor arbitrage.

Abstract

The underpinnings of knowledge management theories is that finding, keeping and leveraging an organization’s information assets are critical to productivity, efficiency of operation and successful competition. Following a brief introduction of the knowledge management systems, this essay examines the corollary relationship between knowledge management and appreciative inquiry, and subsequently points to critical areas in which knowledge management practices can benefit from adopting the appreciative inquiry perspective. More particularly, we submit that appreciative inquiry can motivate organizational-wide adoption and it can provide language-based mechanisms that facilitate effective knowledge exchange. The development of an appreciative inquiry based mode of knowledge management as an alternative to the prevailing approaches opens new horizons and uncovers previously overlooked possibilities, which eventually can contribute to the overall organizational well-being.

Abstract

One of the emerging roles of management accountants in organizations is the design and operation of their organization's knowledge management system (KMS) that ensures the strategic utilization and management of its knowledge resources. Knowledge-based organizations face identifiable general risks but those whose primary product is knowledge, knowledge-products organizations (KPOs), additionally face unique risks. The management accountants’ role in the management of knowledge is even more critical in such organizations. We review the literature and survey a small convenient sample of knowledge-products organizations to identify the general risks knowledge-based organizations face and the additional risks unique to KPOs. The general risks of managing knowledge include inappropriate corporate information policies, employee turnover, and lack of data transferability. Additional risks unique to KPOs include the short life span (shelf-life) of knowledge products, the challenging nature of knowledge experts, and the vulnerability of intellectual property. The paper includes recommendations for management accountants in KPOs to develop and maintain competitive advantage through their KMS. These include developing enterprise-wide knowledge policies, fostering collaboration and documentation, addressing knowledge security, and evaluating the effectiveness of the KMS.
