Abstract

Purpose

Monitoring of a process leading to the detection of faults and determination of the root causes are essential for the production of consistent good quality end products with improved yield. The history of process monitoring fault detection (PMFD) strategies can be traced back to 1930s. Thereafter various tools, techniques and approaches were developed along with their application in diversified fields. The purpose of this paper is to make a review to categorize, describe and compare the various PMFD strategies.

Design/methodology/approach

Taxonomy was developed to categorize PMFD strategies. The basis for the categorization was the type of techniques being employed for devising the PMFD strategies. Further, PMFD strategies were discussed in detail along with emphasis on the areas of applications. Comparative evaluations of the PMFD strategies based on some commonly identified issues were also carried out. A general framework common to all the PMFD has been presented. And lastly a discussion into future scope of research was carried out.

Findings

The techniques employed for PMFD are primarily of three types, namely data driven techniques such as statistical model based and artificial intelligent based techniques, priori knowledge based techniques, and hybrid models, with a huge dominance of the first type. The factors that should be considered in developing a PMFD strategy are ease in development, diagnostic ability, fault detection speed, robustness to noise, generalization capability, and handling of nonlinearity. The review reveals that there is no single strategy that can address all aspects related to process monitoring and fault detection efficiently and there is a need to mesh the different techniques from various PMFD strategies to devise a more efficient PMFD strategy.

Research limitations/implications

The review documents the existing strategies for PMFD with an emphasis on finding out the nature of the strategies, data requirements, model building steps, applicability and scope for amalgamation. The review helps future researchers and practitioners to choose appropriate techniques for PMFD studies for a given situation. Further, future researchers will get a comprehensive but precise report on PMFD strategies available in the literature to date.

Originality/value

The review starts with identifying key indicators of PMFD for review and taxonomy was proposed. An analysis was conducted to identify the pattern of published articles on PMFD followed by evolution of PMFD strategies. Finally, a general framework is given for PMFD strategies for future researchers and practitioners.

Abstract

In a period of rapid environmental change, banks recognise that their survival hinges on their ability to innovate and be responsive to the needs of their customers. Partially spawned by such recognitions, private banks have grasped computer‐based management information systems and incorporated them into all facets of their operations. Their public sector counterparts, however, have been rather tentative in adopting computerised information systems. A proposed computerised quality assurance information system (CQAIS) is described. The system was designed after systematically studying the internal operations of a public agency charged with regulating the activities of banks in a Southeastern state in the United States. The objectives and components of the CQAIS are presented and requirements for its successful implementation are discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

A product or service usually has multiple measurable characteristics, and its performance on different measures may vary and may change over time. Multi-criterion and multi-period performance benchmarking presents a challenge for management to determine performance gaps among comparable products or services. The purpose of this paper is to propose a new performance benchmarking method to address this challenge.

Design/methodology/approach

The author develop this method by formulating two benchmarking functions: a differentiation function based on Shewhart average and standard deviation charts to distinguish the performance of products or services on a single measure, and a categorization function to classify each product’s or service’s overall performance across all measures. By systematically removing the lowest-performing products or services from comparison, the author use these functions iteratively to detect performance gaps.

Findings

Using this method, the author find performance gaps in each of three benchmarking applications of airports, hotels, and minivans, although a number of performance gaps are not obvious from the raw data.

Research limitations/implications

This benchmarking study focuses on the quantifiable outcome performance of products and services.

Practical implications

This benchmarking method is generic and applicable to most products and services. It is robust not only for discovering performance gaps, but also for providing useful insights for managers to prioritize improvement efforts on individual performance measures.

Originality/value

The novelty of this benchmarking method lies in that it can not only find the “best overall” products or services for all performance measures, but can also pinpoint the “best-in-class” products or services as well as performance gaps for each performance measure. In addition, this paper presents several original ideas for performance benchmarking, including: using the control limits of Shewhart control charts to categorize performance gaps, systematically removing the lowest-performing products or services from comparison for the purpose of detecting hidden performance gaps, and using symbolic expressions to integrate benchmarking results from all measures and to show all performance gaps intuitively.

Exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) control chart can be designed to quickly detect small shifts in the mean of a sequence of independent normal observations. But this chart cannot perform well for skewed distribution. The main goal of this article is to suggest an EWMA control chart method that can be used to monitoring small shifts in a skewed distribution. Weighted variance method is introduced to construct a kind of EWMA chart for skewed distribution and the optimization design of this chart is given by using average run length as a performance assessment criteria. Pair of asymmetry control limits could be evaluated by sample dates in skewed distribution. The advantage of this method in detecting little drift for skewed distribution was illustrated by comparing with others control charts.

Abstract

Purpose

Shewhart's control charts are the most important statistical process control tools that play a role in inspecting and producing quality control. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the attributes of fuzzy U control chart.

Design/methodology/approach

If the data were uncertain, they were converted into trapezoidal fuzzy number and the fuzzy upper and lower control limits were trapezoidal fuzzy number calculated using fuzzy mode approach. The result was grouped into four categories (in control, out of control, rather in control, rather out of control). Finally, a case study was presented and the method coding was done in MATLAB software using design U control chart; then, the results were verified.

Findings

The definition of fuzzy numbers for each type of defect sensitivity and the unit can be classified into four groups: in-control and out-of-control, rather in-control and rather out-of-control which represent the actual quality of the products. It can be concluded that fuzzy control chart is more sensitive on recognition out of control patterns.

Originality/value

This paper studies the use of control charts, specifically the attributes of a fuzzy U control chart, for monitoring defects in the format of a case study.

Abstract

Uses Leavitt’s framework as an instrument for solving the long product cycle time related problems experienced in a manufacturing information resource management function. A multi‐disciplinary quality team employing the framework and total quality principles abstracted the function into five related organizational factors of task, technology, people, communication and organizational structure. The team, aided by the framework, quality tools and DSS software, was able to understand fully how problems relating to the five factors contributed to the long product cycle time. The team was successful in reducing the cycle‐time from an average of 12 days to three days.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop an exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) control chart based on the Wilcoxon rank-sum (WRS) statistic using repetitive sampling to improve the sensitivity of the EWMA control chart to process mean shifts regardless of the prior knowledge of the underlying process distribution.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed chart is developed without any distributional assumption of the underlying quality process for monitoring the location parameter. The authors developed formulae as well as algorithms to facilitate the design and implementation of the proposed chart. The performance of the proposed chart is investigated in terms of the average run-length, standard deviation of the run-length (RL), average sample size and percentiles of the RL distribution. Numerical examples are given as illustration of the design and implementation of the proposed chart.

Findings

The proposed control chart presents very attractive RL properties and outperforms the existing nonparametric EWMA control chart based on the WRS in the detection of the mean process shifts in many situations. However, the performance of the proposed chart relatively deteriorates for small phase I sample sizes.

Originality/value

This study develops a new control chart for monitoring the process mean using a two-sample test regardless of the nature of the underlying process distribution. The proposed control chart does not require any assumption on the type (or nature) of the process distribution. It requires a small number of subgroups in order to reach stability in the phase II performance.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a double exponentially weighted moving average control chart using repetitive sampling (RS-DEWMA) for a normally distributed process variable to improve the efficiency of detecting small process mean shift.

Design/methodology/approach

The algorithm for the implementation of the proposed chart is developed and the formulae for the in-control and out-of-control average run lengths (ARLs) are derived. Tables of ARLs are presented for various process mean shift. The performance of the proposed chart is investigated in terms of the average run-length for small process mean shift and compared with the existing DEWMA control chart. Numerical examples are given as illustration of the design and implementation of the proposed chart.

Findings

The proposed control chart is more efficient than the existing DEWMA control chart in the detection of small process mean shifts as it consistently gives smaller ARL values and quickly detects the process shift. However, the performance of the proposed chart relatively deteriorates for large smoothing constants.

Practical implications

The application of repetitive sampling in the control chart literature is gaining wide acceptability. The design and implementation of the RS-DEWMA control chart offers a new approach in the detection of small process mean shift by process control personnel.

Originality/value

This paper fills a gap in the literature by examining the performance of the repetitive sampling DEWMA control chart. The use of repetitive sampling technique in the control chart is discussed in the literature, however, its use based on the DEWMA statistic has not been considered in this context.
